- Experts say limits on gambling advertising are needed after a study revealed sports viewers were exposed to nearly three gambling messages a minute for online betting companies such as FanDuel. CBC’s Marketplace teamed up with researchers to measure the scale of online gambling advertisements in Canada and found that over seven sports broadcasts, viewers were exposed to gambling messages, including commercials, logos and sponsored segments for 20 per cent of the viewing time. Researchers and addiction counsellors call the advertising 'inescapable' and say regulators need to do more to protect children and those vulnerable to addiction.

Just a reminder to anyone who is considering gambling: the sportsbooks limit players that win consistently and let players that lose bet basically whatever they want. They are in the business of taking your money, not in the business of letting you get lucky.
Thank you Marketplace for bringing this to light. Gambling affects so many people across our country and destroys lives - not only of the person addicted, but their friends', families' and others' as well. It's an invisible curse that affects all too many. Gambling ads should restricted in number and regulated to adults only.
I agree that gambling addictions can be as destructive as any drug addiction, obliviously if they have so many ads they are trying to lure those that are resisting temptation to try it.
@@staz.b6310 so true
I don't understand why tabacco & alcohol are banned from this level of advertising in sports. Yet, gambling is... It's like a friend of mine said "The alcoholic will stumble home, but the problem gambler will have no home to go back to".
Douglas Ford
You obviously haven't seen enough alcoholics lol. But yes you have a limit to how much you can drink. You dont have a limit to how much you can gamble.
I have gotten so angry at the number if ads i see just watching the news in the evening.
It gets to be subliminal messenging.
Here in Australia once gambling was let loose on sporting events they went all in & it's very much inescapable. Ironically, in the 80s with rugby league they used to have tabacco sponsorship (Even the trophy was named after a cigarette brand "Winfield"). Alcohol branding/ads was also involved. It took along time to get them out & now gambling has come along & filled the void.
That man stood there and lied through his teeth. He is a monster and he knows he is.
Yep, I've gotten gambling ads for Ontario despite not living there.
Welcome to the party; more annoying than a bad itch 😂
Ya the bet rivers ones are catchy
Alcohol and tobacco ads aren’t allowed so let’s normalize and promote gambling to kids. What a parasitic industry.
the problem is when you win they limit you. If you win on sports they stop taking bets from you or make you bet so small that you have to go somewhere else. If they say their model has winner and losers they should not be allowed to throttle the winners
It makes me laugh. The NBA wouldn't allow expansion into Canada unless NBA games were dropped from Proline gambling. Now the Raptors/NBA seem to allow the biggest advertising for gambling. My personal issue is the amount of advertisement on social media platforms. No one forced you to smoke that first cigarette just like no one forced you to bet above your limit. The only difference is Cigarette manufacturers didn't give you incentives to continue (unless you count nicotine amount). They both know it's addictive to most and hide behind regulations to deny any responsibility.
I'd like to see a law that says Sportsbooks have to take bets from all betters and not allow them to be limited. Then we will see who loses money.
02:47 The prevalence of gambling advertisements during sports games
05:34 The increase in gambling advertisements during sports games is concerning.
08:21 Gambling promotions often come with high wagering requirements.
11:08 Rise in online gambling addiction and increase in calls for help
13:55 Online gambling advertising is inundating and impactful.
16:42 Over 3,500 gambling messages were found during seven sports broadcasts in Ontario.
19:29 Gambling advertisements lack information on potential addiction and target minors.
22:12 Over 3,500 online gambling ads were shown during sports games.
Good piece; I've ceased watching Canadian broadcasts of these games due to the advertising (electing to view via a VPN on international broadcast sites in locations with ACTUAL regulations) but have noticed a surge in "physical" ads as you noted.
CBC sure airs PLENTY of these ads on Hockey Night In Canada. CBC, YOU are part of the problem. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Sportsnet runs HNIC, they are a private company. CBC is only allowed to air their show ads and splits revenue with SN. Its why the habs have been on regular TV for a lot of the season forcing Leaf fans to buy sportsnet to see some blue jerseys.
CBC needs all the advertisements they can get. The taxpayer only funds about 85% for this news outlet. Such a hard hitting story about how an addiction in any excess is bad. Next week : the streaming sites the young kids watch may not be what you thot…oops, thought.
@@rtoma76 4.bp.blogspot.com/-OtormGaoPNY/VgQ7XewpoXI/AAAAAAAAPwE/rFXw-9WkYbs/s1600/cbc%2Bfunding.jpg In relative terms the CBC use to be funded to equivalent of 2 billion in the 80s. Its not, after increases, 1.3 billion. And that 2 billion predates the internet. CBC should be properly funded and 100% arms length. No commercials either so it can do journalism without 'sponsor' interference.
Finally some attention to this ridiculous amount of gambling advertising, next to injury lawyers. We need more truck ads to prop up sales.
I'm glad I don't use any of these betting apps or gamble in general. It drives me nuts every commercial break during a sporting event there's a betting app ad. It's a slippery slope & one big scam to get your money.
Gambling ads need to stop. This is really dangerous, I have family members addicted to gambling, this is not a joke
The NBA is unwatchable with flopping, fouls, ads on the bench, court, jerseys, mini pop ups, breaks every 30 seconds and even during analysis's. Am I watching a sport or what?
it needs to end, sick culture especially from our pro sports teams #Drake #Stake
When you hear about game management from refs how can you trust the game when so much money is involved
As someone who use to work in the slot machine industry I will say, those sounds, colours and lights were developed to attract you visually. Wins are random and aren’t time based. Your brain tricks you into thinking otherwise.
Gambling sites have enough revenue to pay whatever is being asked of them for advertising. Just as we have found a way to bombarded viewers with advertising using computer imposed realtime images and videos (nhl games with those annoying advertising on the boards) maybe it’s time to have those same channels dedicated solely for viewers that show no gambling or alcohol related advertising.
Gambling ads are the worst on hockey nights in Canada. Which is always on the CBC. Thank you for promoting gambling CBC!
Just slightly hypocritical, eh CBC???
@@coffeecake343 What are you on about man? What victimization bubble
This was interesting 🧐. Thank you for the hard work and research that went into making this.
I find the gambling adverts off putting. Sometimes it's so bad i turn the tv off.
Every other ad on youtube is either that Jamie Foxx MGM betting one, Points Bet, whatever else or something about knowing how to play responsibly. This is Biff Tannen's Ontario.
Gambling is degenerate. Hope people can put those apps down…salute. Great work as always Marketplace
Here in the Philippines, Gambling is also popular (duh) and it even advertised in concerts, and even public local events!
Gambling is sad and just feels pathetic 😑
Great job exposing the issue, just wish there was more solution possible.😢
Also wish the same research and exposure on tv could be given to alcohol too.
Interesting they've combined it as "The Alcohol and Gaming Commission" They're the same lobbyists for alcohol & gambling
Online gambling is complete BS. The play Alberta wager requirements are garbage. I do gamble a few times per year, only in the casino and enjoy some free drinks as well. I do goto Las Vegas, they give us "comps" (complimentary rooms, buffet, meals, shows, etc) from our gambling, but also for what we spend on the MGM resorts in general. When in a casino, you bet with cash. I've never used a casino ATM (fees are tremendously high). Leave your credit and debit cards at home/in the room. Once the cash is gone, I am done gaming. Take a budget, stick to it, walk away when it's gone, and if you do hit some winnings/profits cash in and walk away. Never lose more than you can afford to lose. STAY AWAY from virtual casinos/online gambling. Credit card companies also treat online gambling as cash advances, and then you pay more interest.
States and Provinces need to ban live odds being shown on TV during live broadcasts of sporting events that take place in that jurisdiction.
The game on the test looks brutal compared to whats out there. Lol
the real deal should only amplify the effects
I'm so sick and tired of seeing these ads. I've even done everything Google instructs like turning off targeting ads, clearing browsing history, etc. Still they push through. I don't even gamble and it's become every other ad on this site.
I do not gamble, and I do not see ads on my computer, but I do agree, too many gambling ads on TV
Its strange in Eu are not that common. I guess better regulation. However tv here is now 80% adds and 20% content so totaly un-watcheable + the signal provider prevents me from turning tv sound off when adds play...so yeah...need some serios regulations.
Yeah you probably shouldn’t just upload id’s, face photos and credit card info into some company from who knows where’s data bank
Yeah that was a cringe moment 😅
I guess its time to block all adds and fix your devices to show none.
Yes. It has gotten to be too much over the last year. We are all smart people and we can see the ads that are run over and over again. You remember them, not matter what they are about. When it comes to gambling ads then need to just stop.
This should be treated like cigarette advertisements. It's addictive and not good for you.
Anyone gona comment on the seemingly overstated number of "ads" they claim are in a game? What counts as an "ad"? A logo you see once, then again when the camera pans back? I don't understand the method and my gut reaction os that the researcher is losing credibility by overstating.
People don't talk enough about Gambling addiction. I grew up to Gambling and destroys families. A few years ago I went to Mohawk Racetrack and went into the casino, they had pamphlets in the bathroom about Responsible Gambling! If you've got a problem! Gambling gives you the same euphoria as cocaine. The same receptors in the brain.
I think as a society, we need more education and more GA 12 step meetings.
Remember the House always wins!
Try looking into the online gamging industries next there's more of a pit there.
Government should do something about this. There's a lot of family affected by it. 😢
It's totally ridiculous these people can't stop. They're so weak.
Enough is enough, I can't stand all of these gambling ads.
So is this really different than the lottery taking the same money from the same kinds of people with the same tactics?
Do the small amounts of tax money back justify most outlets being in poor neighbourhoods with inconceivably low odds?
Yes but lottery isn't on your phone home page. Like the one guy mentions it easy to access. Not like driving to the local shop, though you can also gamble lotto online. But sports betting is worse because it makes you believe you are in control.
Yes, very different markets and the pigovian tax benefits from lotteries at least cover a good chunk of their social harms. These booking sites are designed to fleece clients by locking out frequent winners but sending endless notifications to those who consistently lose.
Why is there an Arabic article on your website?
Love Marketplace, even if from time to time I don't agree, you always have a well produced show, thanks!
I gambeled years ago, won a ton of money, lost it all and just quit cold turkey.. never looked back unless ur playing for fun with small ammounts just for kicks theres absolutely no reason 2 gamble safer playing the lottery, at least then you can hit a home run if youre "lucky"
The gambling adds are really starting to piss me off, I just want to watch hockey
Was just talking to my buddies about this. It’s way over board and needs to be banned like advertising tobacco
That gambling association is a piece of sh*t. Just because something is regulated DOES NOT mean it is okay! The fact that he can stand there and bullsh*t, minimize, and deflect is wild.
I run Uber and in the past week I think every guy around the age of 30 that talked to me were sports betting
Watching hockey is crazy. During game betting by the CBC hosts. Gtfo Sportsnet and cbc
@@ryanshoults123 sock puppet ?
Mass psychosis is just on a new level when people can be reached 24/7.
Sanctioned gambling is catching up to the legitimate market
All the social media influencers streaming gambling is also very bad attracts the younger players to start gambling, should be banned too
It needs to be outlawed
I lost $6200 last year on sports betting, betting is rip off. U will never win.
Hey, it's not gambling, it's "gaming"! Ha! Ha!
There’s so much money involved of course there all going to defect to the next person the house always win the house being the gov n the business that’s selling the gambling
hustling hard
Thats not a fair test. She knows its not real and a simulated gambling game. They need to put this to the test with people actually gambling their own money. It will truely show emotions since they are connected with that money which might of been used getting gas for the week.
Gambling will never go away anytime soon. If Im watching a UFC match and place a $100 bet on a fighter and win, I'm going to place another bet in the future. Thats how gambling works. If a person loses money, they usually stop gambling.
If an addictive person loses money, the person is going to try to win it back. Not necessarily stop gambling.
Sorry, that is NOT how it works. IF it worked that way, the gambling companies would be out of business in 24 hours. The whole shebang is DESIGNED so that most of the time, you lose.
@jpaul8419 that is NOT how gambling works , most people dont stop as soon as they lose , they try again telling themself maybe they will win the next bet and win their money back .
20:20 - its legal, so its okay? No, its immoral and unethical. not ok. This paid mouthpiece is going to lead folks to mental and financial ruin
You needed to point out the obvious?
Can't comment on the call from a jewish UBC professor for Canada to sign on to SA genocide charge against Israel story, but in stead we can comment about sports betting. Wonder what that is about?
Shhh we don't want people to get upset at zionism when it lobbys so hard all the MPs and businesses in canada, even being against jewish people here by claiming all jews as Zionists.
If you hate gambling, it's because you quit. Keep chasing the bet youll be fine as long as you have enough ammunition
What about the Canadian government & Chinese election interference? Sup?
There are plenty of CBC videos about that. This is not one of them, go watch those ones if that's the information you seek.
Outsmarted lol
@@scbtripwire I just did. Been almost a year since they last reported about it. So again….sup?
@@chrisministerofsmartarsery3322 Then you've not been watching their feed or the TV much. Just go through their videos or do a google search.
Sup is marketplace doesn't cover that kind of topic, save your waste of typing for the proper place.
Nah, people need to take personal responsibility and avoid places that can be triggering for their addictions, the same way an alcoholic would not have booze in their house or go to a bar. If you're addicted to betting on sports or casinos, don't watch sports or go to a casino to help minimize your likelihood of doing the action.
