Smart, stubborn, High energy, Cuddler, razor blades, tear up the house, NOT for everyone, - Nailed it. Mine has done all this, excepting burning my house down. They are extremely protective and make great watchdogs. From the Catahoula standpoint, there are two ways to do everything, their way and the wrong way. These dogs are way smarter than even huskies. Do not get a Catahoula until you know what you are getting into.

We welcomed a stray about two years ago and he became part of our family. I didn’t know what breed of dog he was until someone that knew Catahoula mentioned that that was our dog’s breed. He is brindle and his left eye is blue. He is very stubborn, wants to please you, loving and smart and alpha to my other rescue- a pointer. Both do get along and I love them!

I've had sporting dogs for over 30 years, springer and two Vizslas. The Vizsla energy level is extremely high! We adopted a Catahoula pup and I couldn't agree more with all of these comments. I didn't think it possible but our Maya, 8 months old runs circles around the Vizsla as far as energy. We'll go for a long hilly hike (1-2 hours) she'll come back and she's ready for play time. This is the only dog I've used a corrective collar on. 99% of the time I only use the tone and vibrate and she is very responsive to it. My wife on the other hand has a more difficult time in getting her to listen to commands. We're working on that! Maya's coming along and we're molding her, but she has a very challenging behavioral streak. Dr. Joe is spot on! Not a beginners dog in any way!

Good video - you nailed it.
Love my 8 month old Catahoula but he really does my head in. Lately though he has had a major mental shift.
He has decided he loves me, and for the most part now obeys me (when he feels like it). He has become very very affectionate.
I find diversion works best with him. If he’s focused on doing something he shouldn’t be doing, I find something else to draw his attention to, that makes him think it’s way better.
Catahoula love to be busy so l give Brin jobs so he gets to help mummy.
He is an amazing jumper, clears the drains on our property with little effort when he is doing zoomies, so we have built him an agility jumping course.
We lay scent trails for him to follow with a reward at the end, he gets play dates, and I take him to the beach to swim 2or 3 times a week.
Busy is the secret, they are a working dog.
Catahoula were first introduced here into New Zealand in the 1970’s mainly for pig hunting and as farm dogs - they are not pets.

We live in a neighborhood and she can open some doors and gates but doesn't like anyone other than the 5 of us so doesn't get out of the yard much. Thankfully is a large yard. Our Catahoula simply showed up at our house one day with his mom and brother. Mom was an American Bulldog, dad was the Catahoula...both purebred. Unfortunately the family that had mom and dad abandoned them, simply moved out of the house across the way and left them behind. Mom was no longer being fed so she was looking to offload her remaining two offspring. I was taking our daughters to school one morning and mom came walking across the front yard with the puppies in tow...we stopped to pet them, recognizing they were strays at the time, but had to leave them behind because we had to get to school. Apparently that passed her "sniff test" as later that day after school pickup we returned home and found them piled up on top of each other in the driveway napping. Mom was nowhere to be found and never to be seen again. We took them both in and they were a handful, behaviorally (just like other's sentiments). We initially intended to keep both until one began becoming aggressive toward the other (they were both males)...fortunately we were able to find a great home for him and we kept the one we currently have. He had a serious problem with chewing and other destructive behaviors initially but I believe we're about to train him that finding sticks in the yard to chew on are far preferable to chewing on the house. He needs so much exercise and activity it's impossible for us to keep up as a family of four...we're constantly trying to find activities to tire him out to no avail. Overall he loves everybody, rarely barks, and wants ALL the pets, ALL the time. He's a rotten guard dog, and that's OK. I am a mechanic and he wants to follow me around the shop constantly, always curious about what I'm doing. I speak to him exactly like I would if my best human friend were there, and he always listens intently. The only thing is, he is so affectionate that when I have to get down close to ground level to do something on a vehicle, he is ALL OVER me giving me endless kisses and nosing/pawing me for attention. I can't help but giggle when he does that, but he does get in the way...sometimes it's difficult to get work done as a result. He does play aggressively, our 5ft tall 11 year old handles him OK but our 3.5ft tall 8 year old has problems sometimes. She loves him but he plays with her sometimes by jumping and nipping...which has been very difficult to train him out of doing. No success at all. She may activate his herding instinct due to her size and movements.
We live on a retired horse farm with a 2 acre pond and 16 land acres, lots of squirrels and rabbits for him to chase, and the pond is great for him to take a swim in the summer and chase/bork at the "water raisins" (minnows). He seems happy, and we want to give him his best life. We enjoy having him around even if he can be a little stinker sometimes.

I got a catahoula puppy. I read up on them, and saw they were high energy and stubborn. But I had high energy dogs before, and figured all dogs can be stubborn, so no big deal! Boy was I wrong. This dog is demanding from morning to night. Don’t give her attention fast enough, and you will pay a price. She knows what you want, and does the opposite. She will get your attention one way or another. But then she can be so sweet and cuddly, before drawing blood with those sharp teeth.

Our Louise is 13 months old and is just as you describe; smart, high energy, easily bored, independent, a toy terrorist as well. They also say that Catahoulas need a job, and that seems to be the case. Louise and I walk an average of 10 to 15 miles every single day (4 walks) and we train together every day as well. But she’s entirely worth it. Catahoulas just aren’t for people who want a laid back pet, that’s for certain.

We raised Catahoula's for a little while. They are VERY smart, one of our dogs learned social skills so fast we only had to show her once what a sit or stay was and she got it. They are stubborn, one of our males was slow to learn stuff and it was simply that he was so stubborn he refused to do what we wanted, when we wanted him to do it. They are full of energy, one of our dogs was noted for running 15 or 16 Kms everyday just to keep his energy levels down to a controllable level. They will herd cattle all day, hunt racoons all night, have a short nap and do it all over again. They are tough as nails too. One of our smaller females (45 pounds) was sold to a person who had sheep. Coyotes killed several sheep one night. She was let out the next day and tracked the coyotes to their den. She killed six of them before she died. Phenomenal dogs but definitely NOT for everyone.
I loved my Cats but wouldn't get another one. Too difficult to deal with.

She's as sharp as a whip, crafty, with a good memory. And Catahoulas can climb trees (?!) Check her back paws and sharp claws. They protrude on command like a cat's. All the potential to be just an awesome dog. If I'm owner/trainer/leader enough to keep up with her ... good luck!

She’s super high energy especially as a puppy ( she is 13 now). We adopted a basset beagle mix and it helped her to relax in the house immensely. We rescued a catahoula thinking he was just a pit hound mix, we never expected the energy. I stepped up to the plate and took over majority of the responsibility to teach train and exercise him. He still gets separation anxiety and with him now at nearly 10 months and no longer biting or pinching and learning the rules better I think I can handle another dog that’s older but I need one that will compliment him and work right into the schedule I have him in. I think having another older dog will be great to teach him more manners and keep him a little more company during the day. Hopefully we won’t need to continue to put him in his crate.

AS a breeder of registered dogs since the 80's and non-registered before that here would be my 1 to 5 list. 1. They are a working breed. They were never meant to be pets. 2. If a breeder sells to a pet home then they are a crap breeder. 3. White headed ones should be avoided. They are often hearing or vision impaired including complete deafness and/or blindness. Good breeders put these types of pups down. 4. Only proven working dogs should ever be bred. 5. Insert your list here. They are high energy, high prey drive, hard headed dogs and as the NALC motto goes....not everyone needs a catahoula.
