      Same, had great times playing this game, probabaly part because Its the FPS that I competed at the highest level, shame I was not a little older and aware of these Q2 tournaments at the time. Nice to see this as I played the same maps would have been great to play against Thresh, I probably did under his other Aliases :)

      @bongo155 Did you play Q2 WOD 7.51? you had speedrockets, granade launcher, streetsweeper, tesler etc. alot more weapon options and was the MOD of Q2 that I excelled at without it being overpowered. There were a select few who really challenged me at that time.

      This is so cool and strange at same time.
      I never seen that duel before, but this bring some nostalgic feel, 98 when i only 4 yr old and watch my uncle playing quake 2 multiplayer.
      I can remember how i am happy with little things, i can remember the good smells of cake from my grandma house, and while waiting for the coffee watching my uncle playing Quake.
      My grandma gone and my uncle too...
      Not wanting to be pessimistic, but I miss being so childish.
      I did not give a damn about the opinion of others and I was happy with small things from day to day.
      Now I kind of am a slave to what others think and I've literally been more unhappy than happy.
      And idk why i commenting this in this video...
      Some insomnia and probably drunk of "sleepless".

      I'm curious what caused you to be "slave to other people's opinions".

    • @LucasSouza023
      @LucasSouza023 Před 6 lety +11

      You know, its normal to every person grownt experience.
      When we are kids, you are like a full spontaneous, no ego, dgaf for other opinions and you do what you wanna do.
      So, in pre adolescence you hear a lots of "no" "you cant" "this is idiot" "this is a dumb ideia" "impossivble" "never" by dads, brothers, familiars, friends, and thats made you feel wrong to do what you want, and made you think that you need to be perfect, no failure, better than others, and if you fail you gonna feel bad. Little by little you puts masks in yourself just to not feel wrong, to feed ego, and for others accept you.
      And its because those dads, brothers, familiars and friends taught you that you has acceptance by doing what they need, and not what you want or need, so, inconsious you bringa this to every aspect in your life.
      This is ego basically.
      So, we born without ego, we gain a full ego in adolescence, and you remove along the years before 20yrs.
      Im 22 yro, so i have a mediocre ego, nothing compared to 3 or 4 years back.
      it's a phase of life.

    • @tappajaav
      @tappajaav Před 6 lety

    I was reading the comments about memories and feelings with this game, before watch the video. And after less than 5 seconds watching it I realised how strong these feelings are in me too. This was my first fps and I used to play it with lots of friends. Sometimes deathmatches of 20 guys together, some tournaments and etc. I still playing fps these days but omg... This one, the movements, the way you learned every inch of the map, every jump and trick. How to shoot the rockets or the pleasure of don't miss a single shoot with the railgun, no matter how fast things were going... Nothing can compare to it. And I wish I could go back to those days and have a nice session playing nonstop the entire day.

    10:00 is my favorite moment in FPS competitive gaming history. I first watched this from Thresh's POV (shortly after it happened in 1998). I was amazed that he actually knew where Immy was. Then I watched it from Immy's POV and realized that Thresh HIT HIM WITH THAT RAIL!

    • @NVE
      @NVE Před 4 lety +4

      sound my friend. he heard him going that direction and he def knew he was most likely going for the rail which would put him up by where he was looking or he would be under it to the left if he decided to go that way. and alot of people on that map will peak middle out of that spot with the rail after grabbing it to get information because it provides you cover from the bottom half of middle. I'm pretty sure he just timed his shot or he saw that tiny piece of his body that peaked out for a second.

    • @Trevdawg48

      @@NVE I competed in FPS tournaments for years around this era (sounds like you did too). I had the best and biggest monitor available and a great system ($4000 computer in 1998) with a Voodoo 2 graphics card. I really didn't think he could see him with the technology then. But watching it on this high def you can briefly see Immortal just before Thresh fires the rail. Interesting. I guess that makes a bit less cool. What made it so cool is you can't tell that he hits him from Thresh's POV and it looks like he didn't. I had watched it a few times from Thresh's view and then saw it from Immortal's and that rail hitting just made it that much cooler (and the legend of Thresh that much bigger for me).

    For the youngsters here and for historic interest - Back in the day I had 2x12mb Voodoo 2's (SLI cable) for this, enabling me to put the resolution to 1024x768 with smooth frame rates. In comparison 1x12mb Voodoo 2 would only allow up to 800x600 resolution, whereas adding the 2nd in SLI (via cable) allowed the picture to interlace together to increase the resolution and frame rate, each card would alternate each line - good times. The previous gen Voodoo 1 - the best brand name was Orchid Righteous and was a 4mb card allowed a resolution max of 640x480, but back then ('97-'98) it was breathtaking - consider that the PS1 console was still in its prime and the PS2 was not out for a couple of years....

      i had a pIII 400mhz and a Hercules terminator 2x agp 8mb card in 98 til about late 2000. it was pretty good for q2 and quakeworld but i remember it kind of shitting the bed when counter-strike came out and my fps wasn't the greatest with it (never really tried half-life before that). i think i was only getting like 50fps in opengl mode. kind of weird since it was based off the quakeworld engine and i got a lot better fps on quake. maybe counter-strike just had better textures especially after retail 1.0 came out in 00 who knows. i just got into cs at the tail end of beta so i don't remember what i got before retail 1.0 came out after valve bought the mod. I'm sure valve hacked some new technologies into the engine too so that prob had an effect on fps too. i did have a sick ass sony trinitron from 96' that did 140hz refresh at 640x480 so it made it feel nice and smooth even at 50-60 fps still.

    This is awesome, it is great to look a demo 20 years old and see how these guys fight each other deceiving with noises, this is especially notorious at 8:35 when he shoots to cover the pick up of the rocket launcher (he fails to execute it) and the proceeds to drop down and jump in place to trick his enemy into thinking he left that spot, marvelous, that put a huge grin on my face.

      He didnt even shoot at 8:35? How do you know he wanted to shoot but failed, funny :D Btw, quake 2 has evolved hugely since this. Also at the time you posted. These 2 would get raped by pretty much anyone playing. So, you saying this stuff is rarer now, is not true. All the stuff they do are common now, even among the lowest ranked players.
      In 1998 this was top play, since 2005 it is just bad. Low accuracy, very slow movement, bad tactics.

      I wish I had started with QW. I played Q2 from 1998 until 2002 until I discovered QW. It literally blew my mind. So much faster, so much more skill required. There's still an active QW scene, I hope you are aware?

    • @michaelmaloskyjr
      @michaelmaloskyjr Před 6 lety +1

      I wholly disagree that QW requires "more skill" -- look at q2 4v4 tdm: all the weap/ammo drops, position plays, team comms not to mention that q2 requires skill with -- let's count all the weaps -- hyper, rl, rg, cg, sg, gl and completely unique to q2 -- handgrenades. In fact, if you've seen any high-level 4v4 q2tdm play, you would know handgrenades can completely turn a 15min match around. Apples to oranges, like rat is to purri.

    • @goqsane
      @goqsane Před 6 lety

      Have you ever seen a QW 4on4 match? Yes, I do agree that Q2's drop system adds SOME complexity. You have to realize how backwards Q2 team comms are, just watch a QW demo and you'll see what I mean.

    • @michaelmaloskyjr
      @michaelmaloskyjr Před 6 lety

      I still say apples to oranges; just because your ups ceiling is higher doesn't mean more skill. Look at q2's rg delay, cg spinup delay, handgrenade timing -- hell even slower rl -- those timing elements add a magnitude of difficulty.
      The other elephant in the room is the level of competition year in and year out that elevates the level of play, discovering glitches that result in enhanced gameplay (e.g. quake double jumps FIRST appeared in q2 point release 3.14 which revolutionized q2dm1 game, like doubling to mega, etc.)
      Are you gonna tell me iC wasn't as skilled as a QW squad simply because iC was vq3? Or the Scandie/Polish 4v4teams rocking the NDML leagues for over 10 years strong weren't as skilled simply because they were q2?
      While I was starstruck by watching LocKtar win during the last quakecon duel final, the real quake god was over in the q2 bracket EASILY taking home $5k final: [POL] David. David's reign over both the q2 duel and tdm leagues AND mastery using the FIVE primary weaps(and you NEED to use them) is astonishing.
      I have no doubt about the motor skills muscle memory required in QW, but look at the sheer size of tdm maps in q2(dm8 warehouse) and imagine all the powerups, two different armors, shards and weap areas to control. Thank goodness q2 IS slower -- time to think&strategize. Rapha's brainy 'five steps ahead' applies perfectly.

    • @goqsane
      @goqsane Před 6 lety +1

      I had been playing very high level Quake 2 before I moved to QW. I was on the same lan as one of the best Polish players ever to have played the game (HCK.Scooby) and I still claim that QW requires a shit ton more skill to master it.

I remember how many times we played to know about each respown of that game, ammo and weapons, to know the sounds are were located and how faster to come over it (even to jump form the lift button to second floor, jump to middle of circle in 2nd floor, and oh that railgun. It was nice, we like it, we played in LAN and played at internet, get tournoments and has own setup with exect from file jeyboard, own mouses and so on. First time to play with mouse and use sensitivity, undertanding that rocket launcher not always best solution, with one shout of railgun become real professionals (as well if you can jump to the edge from small evelator at q2dm1) - you know what at telling about)))) just if you have same memories, please like comment, so i know am not only one at this planet.

      sadly, quake 2 was slow even by 1997 standards, and it caused a huge playerbase split - many player were still on Q1 because it was faster and harder. their aiming speed, prediction and everything is on par with modern gaming, specially if you consider that they used ball mice which were around 200-300 modern DPI

      I also did, but the resolutions kinda smoothed it out. Now go and try out 1200dpi with 1024x768.. 1600x1200 needed sensitivity to be aburdly high ingame for those twitch railgun shots on a standard desk.

    • @evgen5647
      @evgen5647 Před 6 lety +6

      I always used low-sense because I don't need 360 noscope. So modern non-gaming mouses with 800 dpi are crap for gaming. Good old ball mouse was okay, especially while increasing PS/2 port frequency up to 100Hz or 200Hz.
      Also I don't understand why you are saying that dpi are connected with rendering resolution... It is FOV that matters in 3D, not rendering resolution.
