- Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was taught to play the then fashionable psaltery when she entered the Benedictine monastery at Disibodenberg as a young girl in the early 12th century. The European gittern was first documented in iconographic sources from the subsequent century and became an important and popular instrument during the 14th and 15th centuries.
Medieval psaltery made by Paul Baker after an illustration in the 13th century manuscript Cantigas de Santa Maria.
5-course gittern after Hans Oth, built by Lauri Niskanen.
Digital surpeti (shruti box) for the drone, a few zills (finger cymbals), and, of course, a solid dose of reverb to create a sonic illusion of a medieval monastery ambience. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
That generous dose of reverb really makes it sound heavenly.
Beautiful instrumental rendition of a chant piece composed by the glorious saint.
The added effects bring the little voices of these fragile instruments in proximity to the vocal music.
Thank you very much!

Thank you very much!
you forgot to mention the droning in the background ;) what is it? it sounds a bit bowed or maybe even and indian pandura that is tuned one octave lower or something. very nice interpretation!
Thank you! I am using a digital version of an Indian shruti box or surpeti, a kind of bellow-driven harmonium, for the drone.
🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏
Where does the drone sound come from?
I am using a digital version of an Indian shruti box or surpeti, a kind of bellow-driven harmonium, for the drone.
I’m interested that guitar. Is that a baroque guitar?
No, it's a medieval gittern.
Is that a Tanpura (indian) in the background?
Well, it is a digital shruti box (surpeti), so you can say it's an Indian sort of drone.
@@petterdyndahl it sounded familiar 😁
@@dilipaweeratunga Hope you liked it :-)
