A funny thing about Sexy Hiking is that since everyone plays Getting Over It first and then goes back to that game, they don't realize that you can actually move and jump without the hammer in that game, they just push themselves along. So Bennett accidentally made that game a lot harder, which I bet he's proud of.

I know nobody asked or cares but, if you know the rock that sits at the bottom of the little pit to the right of the anvil, I'm the reason it's (still) there. On release that rock had some really weird collisions with the hammer and it could get you sorta stuck there (you could usually wiggle free after a bit but it was still frustrating), and after getting mad at the rock for ruining one of my runs I decided to name it rex the rock and say hi to it on my way past in later runs (cuz i felt less ashamed of that than having genuinely bad feelings towards a god damn rock png), but eventually bennet foddy addressed the rock by just deleting it in an update. I made a jokey post on the steam discussions mourning the tragic and unexpected loss of my dear friend Rex, and in the next update it was back (with less janky collisions), with the patch notes including a small line about adding back "Rex the Rock"
Grayfruit is one of the only CZcamsrs I know that actually MISSES the voice of the narrator in Getting Over It
it was always strange to me how much people seem to just DESPISE the narration when he's just having a bit of a gaff really

i love it too because it's symptomatic of the human brain's ability to start treating almost any movable object like an extension of the body if you use it enough. same thing operating the rubber hand experiment. it's a fascinating field of study with applications in prosthetics and engineering and all sorts of other stuff

In regards to splits: the software is called Livesplit and it's pretty intuitive to use. There's a lotta features but the basics of just putting in splits are easy enough and it does most of the heavy lifting for you. Everyone does it differently, but the easiest way to ensure splits don't distract you from the game is to put your splits during moments of downtime. When I speedrun Super Metroid, I do it during boss death animations. When I speedrun monster hunter, I do it during the quest complete animation. Cutscenes, loading screens, really any sort of forced pause can work. The actual split input is just a single key press, so it's not too big of a deal to find a spot for it. Some runners also use a foot pedal if there isn't any sort of downtime.
And depending on the game, some even have scripts that will do the splits for you automatically, iirc.
@@dizzy_eevee Yup! Mods exist to do that for modern games and emulator plugins (built right into livesplit!) exist for older stuff
i saw a skyward sword runner mess up a split input and lose time a while ago, so gray def has a point about manual splits. you could also be MASSIVE brained and have someone sitting next to you that does your splits for you lmao

@@dizzy_eevee Surprisingly enough, there are scripts for a *very* big library of games. It's not that hard, you just gotta have some basic experience with Cheat Engine modding, and it should all "click" into place when you want to find a way of measuring how level transitions can be measured, so any nerd with that knowledge can make their own scripts.

24:38 I remember when I first played Getting Over it. I had slaved away for countless hours trying to beat it, and when I finally got the final tower, my hammer slipped, and I fell all the way down to the base of it, with my hammer on the other side.
I got the bad ending. And Bennet Foddy's dialogue was salt in the wound. I was so crushed, I had worked so hard getting there. I wanted to quit and never play again, but instead I reset my save and started from scratch. I ended up kicking ass out of nowhere, beating the game in under an hour. That feeling I had of refusing to quit, beating the odds, and accomplishing my goal has never quite been recaptured for me in media since.
Fast-forward to the present day, and I've gotten the So Over It achievement. Something about the game keeps me coming back, I'm now close to a hundred wins. I'm not particularly fast, my best time is 6 minutes and 32 seconds, but I'm very proud of myself.
I know it's a very goofy game made for the express purpose of pissing people off. But damn it, I think the game is art, and something probably everyone should experience. If you've only ever watched CZcamsrs play it, do yourself a favor and beat it yourself.
I've tried Getting Over It several times because someone I know kept telling me I should. Probably because I love difficult platformers and games with unique movement.
I always quit around the halfway point. The movement is just completely unbearable to me. And I hate hard games where you're unable to easily retry tricky parts to figure them out. It's the complete opposite of what I want out of a game.
Despite this, I still admire the game for doing something unique and I'm glad other people can find enjoyment in overcoming its challenges. This might the only game I genuinely hate playing but still respect/enjoy watching. And I liked your story :)
@@aBlackMage The controls are by far the worst thing about it. Of course now I've gotten used to all their little quirks, but they still don't do exactly what I want some of the time.
Once you get past that barrier and get to the top that first time, the game because so much easier. Then replaying the game is where the fun is at. But I can't fault you for not wanting to get past that first hurdle, it's brutal, and you will spend most of your time getting back to where you were.

13:26 Dude, Mega Man 9 has more or less the same thing. That game has Challenges (50 of them, which are basically just achievements for people not playing the Xbox version (although 12 of them are absent in that version since they're turned into actual Xbox achievements)), and one of them requires you to beat the entire game from start to finish 30 times.
When I committed to completed all the challenges early last year, I literally thought at first that that one was just there to troll you and pad out the game length for 100% completionists, but then I started trying to get up the leaderboards for the fastest time while trying to get it and it made the whole process way more fun, especially with how satisfying it is to do advanced tricks with all the Robot Master weapons in that game.
Weird how something like that ends up being an incentive to try speedrunning, eh?

me when grey HATES livesplit (the vast majority use livesplit, and it's open source, not proprietary. It also has all of the features you'd want (and more), including plugins for auto-splitting and load cutting)
but also no splitting doesn't hurt your run. at some point it becomes second nature, and if a person is smart at all, the splits will be during moments where you're not pressing anything anyway.
There's a reason, for example, in SM64 or SMS or whatever, it's after you get a star/shine, you aren't doing anything for a good few seconds.
It WILL fuck up your run if you put a split during an input heavy section for some reason, and it WILL fuck up your run if you're thinking too hard about it, like, if you accidentally split twice or forget to split - but there's hotkeys to fix those too, ultimately you shouldn't be spending too much time thinking about it.
Also, it's not something that's unique to modern games, having flags and stuff. WE set where the splits are, and we can utilize running code in the game, not meant for us, to split for us. Almost all games use flags that we can use for splits. Some games that allow emulators can utilize auto-splitting, but you know, emulators are already and thin ice, so nothing fancy is like that is allowed. But modern PC games... often times, even actual mods are allowed, like in Portal, you can mod textures because why not I guess, and yeah use an auto-splitter.

Going off of the splits thing you were talking about, most splits in games are set up in places where the player isn't in control of the game, or where there is very little going on

The 50 playthroughs thing is exactly how i feel about hotline miami 2 genocide. It seems like way too many kills but after full comboing Dead Ahead for like the 50th time you become a god gamer, making a lot of the workshop levels that seem super difficult at first actually pretty manageable

Actually i think completing it the second time is more challenging then the 50th time. Most of the people after finishing the game would never do it again, but after 49 runs that feels easy and casual.

to answer your question with splits, I split right before a load so it really doesn't loose time as I just have like 15sec of nothing after I split.

i seem to remember that he adds more quotes the further removed his run is from a proper speedrun
it's not something I take extreme care to keep consistent but yeah that is still kind of a thing. 5 is my default for when it's like, an adequate casual speedrun without anything too crazy.
Sometimes I have to physically restrain myself from saying "slick" when you do.
