He was asked by Burt Bacharach to write a tune for a Dionne LP (not unusual given that more material were needed for albums). In fact Dee Dee Warwick sang the demo (I heard it and she smoked!). However, the track never made it to Dionne nor Burt. Mary came by Gentile's office and saw the acetate record of the demo. When Mickey explained it was for Dionne, Mary said, "Oh no it's not!" then grabbed the demo and put it in her bag! Mickey knew better than to fight her. BTW if you're referring to the Mary Wells bio written by Peter Benjamson (sp), beware - a lot of inaccurate information is in that book and the info you shared is an example of such. Peter tried to shut me down on social media when I was posting about the Mary Wells CD because he knew I went to the actual sources and thus posed a threat to him. Fortunately many industry folks who knew me put him in his place.

I didn't know about the drugs until you told me. I was twelve years old when I first heard a Motown song I had to have. While I had heard others from Tamla, I had never heard an official Motown song until Mary's, "You Beat Me To The punch," came along. With my allowance I bought my first 4 singles. Mary's, The Marvelettes, "Playboy,", Neil Sedaka's, " Breaking Up..," and Dee Dee Sharp's, "Gravy." I still remember the little shop downtown where I bought them. Anyway, I was an eternal fan of Mary's from then on. A little funny story. My Copy of, "Never Never Leave Me had been melted in a fire so, in !991, I went looking through every record bin in town for like a week. I finally found one in a, "used," bin in a record store, but the price wasn't marked. I went to the manager who acted all surprised and said, "oh, this shouldn't have been on the floor that way. this is a very rare album,. I'm going to take it to the office and relist it." The creep decided to charge 90 dollars for it. I left annoyed and disappointed, of course, but I laughed my butt off at him, when a few years later it came out on CD, and I got it used for 4 dollars. You have no idea what added pleasure I get every time I listen to it, as I have the last laugh on that greedy SOB who tried to rip me off for 90 dollars. I think of him every time. By the way, he soon went out of business. Last laughs are a gift that keeps on giving.

20th Century Fox didn't promote Mary they were busy promoting white artists. Century Fox owned movies studios it would've been easy to promote the songs inside movie soundtracks. But the executives there couldn't be bothered. So this is the answer to all the idiot who go on trashing Berry Gordy. Never heard this one before, but this was one of her lesser known songs after she left Motown. She had two LP's on the 20th Century-Fox label and that was it. She went to a few labels until she went to Jubilee in 1968.

@blkshepherd i beg your pardon sir or madam but i'm not whining and i HAVE done my research...true mary made some bad choices at the behest of her husband but i still maintain that berry gordy and mary wells got into a huge dispute over her royalties and how she should have been continued to be showcased at motown and THAT my naieve "friend" is the main bone of contention that existed between mary and berry and was also one of the main reasons she left motown.
I know many people feel leaving Motown was a mistake; however, when a company starts pushing you in a corner because of a younger talent we must move on to other adventurers. Mary was very talented and she took her career in her own hands and decided she was not afraid work outside of the box. Because of her courage and independence, she has provided some great music with other recording companies - Jubilee, Reprise, Epic, Fox, Atco, and Aim. She continue to do what she love best until she died. Because of this motivation and love for singing, Mary left us with a great catalogue of music to cherish. She needs to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This is just proof-positive that the greed of a record label can have grave and dire consequences. White artists get ripped off all the time. That was the nature of the industry. Black artists had their music and royalties stolen routinely by white companies. Motown gave black artists better deals, stardom, promotion and exposure than they could've ever gotten at white record labels. These were opportunities. Barry Gordy started as a working man with a dream and a drive to make it happen. Gordy wasn't born rich. First black man in the game competing and winning against whites in racist times. Motown was also the soundtrack of Back Civil Rights movement in the USA. Don't care about useless haters who only complain, tear down and attack other black people.

But they didnt have Smokey or HDH. the KEY to Mary Wells Talent like the Supremes HDH.

I didn't know she had a drug problem. I know that towards the end she was wheelchair-bound and had to Sue Motown for residuals, just before she died.

Mary Wells, upon whose back Motown was built. Diana would not exist if it was not for her. A real gutsy singer (Bye Bye Baby, check it out) but smooth out by... for public consumption, but the REAL stuff! OMG the harmonics.
alphotheone Mary Wells was big time and everybody of a certain age knows this. You are some Johnny come lately who simply has a hate for Diana Ross. Not real appreciation for the greatness of Mary Wells greatness. Mary was Diana's role model. She was worshiped by the girls. Ya'll do a huge disservice to black musical history all of which these women were a part of black music & black cultural history. Motown produced tons of great music and artists. Diana left Motown and became even bigger. Black people always cutting each other down its so ugly & backward. All of these people worked under segregation & Jim Crow they paved the way for today's black superstars. Diana, Micheal & Stevie became the biggest without Motown. All y'all do is hate on them.

Prior to the renaming of 20th Century-Fox Records, it was originally called 20th Fox as a record label division of 20th Century-Fox in the late 50's.
Let's stop pretending and just admit it: Mary Wells was Motown's best; this song certainly proves it. Some other Motown acts may have had more glamour, but when it comes to raw talent and taking possession of a song, Ms. Wells is poised on the pinnacle.

Never heard this one before, but this was one of her lesser known songs after she left Motown. She had two LP's on the 20th Century-Fox label and that was it. She went to a few labels until she went to Jubilee in 1968.

Mary's 2nd 20th Century Fox release is a Beatles covers LP. It's only ok.
She did a pretty cool album for Atco, too. Her song from that album, Dear Lover was like her biggest post-Motown hit.
She did 2 albums for the label, and that was it.

@blkshepherd i beg your pardon sir or madam but i'm not whining and i HAVE done my research...true mary made some bad choices at the behest of her husband but i still maintain that berry gordy and mary wells got into a huge dispute over her royalties and how she should have been continued to be showcased at motown and THAT my naieve "friend" is the main bone of contention that existed between mary and berry and was also one of the main reasons she left motown.
I know many people feel leaving Motown was a mistake; however, when a company starts pushing you in a corner because of a younger talent we must move on to other adventurers. Mary was very talented and she took her career in her own hands and decided she was not afraid work outside of the box. Because of her courage and independence, she has provided some great music with other recording companies - Jubilee, Reprise, Epic, Fox, Atco, and Aim. She continue to do what she love best until she died. Because of this motivation and love for singing, Mary left us with a great catalogue of music to cherish. She needs to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Berry and Diana didnt begin dating until 1965 the Supremes greatest year. Thats neither here nor there and quite frankly I dont give a damn. Its in the Past, something you nor I can CHANGE. GET OVER IT! Diana, Mary, Berry have all gotton over it and Moved On with their Lives, You need to get on with yours .

If it wasent for Berry Gordy no one would have heard of Mary Wells, the Supremes, the tempts, the marvelettes, stevie wonder, jackson five, marvin gay, nor the Mircales. It was Berry Gordy that introduced these Unknown folks to the World. so give Berry some credit and Quite Whinning about how he ripped thme off.
This is just proof-positive that the greed of a record label can have grave and dire consequences. Motown had a star right in the palm of its greedy hands, and would rather let her go than pay her what was rightfully her due. It's criminal and shameful that Mary Wells had to leave and go elsewhere to try and rebuild her musical career. It's obvious this woman was cheated out of her royalties, and then blacklisted when she left to keep her from making money or gaining anymore notariety.
White artists get ripped off all the time. That was the nature of the industry. Black artists had their music and royalties stolen routinely by white companies. Motown gave black artists better deals, stardom, promotion and exposure than they could've ever gotten at white record labels. These were opportunities. Barry Gordy started as a working man with a dream and a drive to make it happen. Gordy wasn't born rich. First black man in the game competing and winning against whites in racist times. Motown was also the soundtrack of Back Civil Rights movement in the USA. Don't care about useless haters who only complain, tear down and attack other black people.

@darchylde612 When My Guy hit No.1 even the Beatles named Mary their Favorite Female singer and asked her out on the road..Other Larger Companies offered Mary much more than Berry could afford. Since Mary's contract was void because she was underage, she opted to go with 20th cent. who also offered Movie Deals. so even if Motown did try to discourage air play, her Movies would have still made her a star. But they didnt have Smokey or HDH. the KEY to Mary Wells Talent like the Supremes HDH.
@blkshepherd and one more caveat, reading over your comment about diana working with and listening to berry instead of against him, well if you're screwing the boss then it would be pretty stupid to work against him now wouldn't it? once the supremes hit it big my friend, a LOT of motown groups suffered for it because berry's main focus became diana ross, everyone else (including the supremes) were a distant second and third place for berry gordy.

Berry was very proud of Mary when she hit with My Guy it was cross over hit(hit goal for motown) The Beatles asked her to open for them. Mary was on to great things but chose to LEAVE for More Money and movies at 20th Cent.Fox. They are the ones who killed her career not Motown or Berry.
