    Mary Ester Wells was a poor girl who came from a section of Detroit's " Black Bottom" is what they called it. She ran up to Berry Gordy after a Sock Hop. Typical teenager of the time pony tale and bobbi socks with wide bottom scurt. She performed " Bye Bye Baby." She had written it and asked him to present it to Jackie Wilson. After she had gotten halfway thru the song he knew he had found his first female star!!!

      Black Bottom was not a negative term . It referred to the soil of that area of Detroit when it was farmland. The neighborhood was called Paradise Valley also because of all the successful black businesses located there. Why say poor ? I have not seen any Vanderbilts or Rockefellers make it in the entertainment field. My family has been in Detroit area since 1919.

      Since Mary was no longer with Motown (This song was on 20th Century fox records) She had no one at the company to promote her. Plus there was so much bad-blood between her and Berry Gordy, he probably did what he could to stifle her success with any other label. He was a real piece of Sh###.

      Mary's first three singles for 20th Century had a eerily similar fate: starting out very strong jumping up the charts, but all mysteriously fizzling out around #55 or so. Many people say Gordy was responsible for that.

    She looks Fabulous.. She just left Motown.. It's a shame she clashed with Berry Gordy and took bad advice and broke the Motown contract. Few people are aware of her physical handicaps she overcame and still sang beautifully.. When she was two years old she had meningitis, which left her deaf in one ear and partially blind.. I hope there is a special place in heaven for her, she had many obstacles… Smokey Robinson was writing songs especially suited for her that Berry Gordy took and gave to Diana Ross ( who he was sleeping with)..

    • @mikeatturnpike
      @mikeatturnpike Před 9 lety +2

      Richard Beman
      Sorry Richard...you have got the wrong impression. Smokey was writing songs for her as the biggest artist the label had at the time (1962-64) until she decided to leave Motown, on the advice of her then husband/manager. It was only then that Motown and Berry took an interest in the Supremes. No way BG took songs from Mary and gave to the Sups.

    • @1953childstar
      @1953childstar Před 9 lety +2

      mikeatturnpike Oh yes, Mary was aware of the fact the Supremes were being allocated better songs and less focus was being placed on Mary Wells… After all Berry Gordy was the father of Diana Ross's first child..Too late to have that one aborted..

    • @mikeatturnpike
      @mikeatturnpike Před 9 lety +2

      Richard Beman Richard, what has Berry's child with Diana got to do with Mary Wells? She had left Motown before the Sups had their first major hit...and they worked with HDH not Smokey. And the child came many years after Mary left. Don't know how old you are, but those are the facts from the 60s.

    • @1953childstar
      @1953childstar Před 9 lety +2

      I am in my 60's and my late father was a Detroit native familiar with the affair that started early in Diana's career with Berry Gordy.The "time frame was early" and yes, the child that was not aborted did come later.

Motown had a lot of power back then and they groomed Mary into super stardom, so maybe some resentment for her leaving which is natural they fought against her success but we'll never really know. I do know if she would have stayed at Motown she would have had continued success. A great producer and a great voice together popping hit after hit is so rare.

    In 1965 Dee Dee Warwick sang background vocals for Mary Wells.
    "Well, I had done demos for Tamla, which was Motown in New York. So, they were well-aware of me. And it just didn't work for me. You know, their sound, their rhythms, they were different from ours that we used on the East Coast.
    What was your first meeting with Berry Gordy like?
    Oh, very different; very, very different. As a matter of fact, I had met Berry when he was first writing, like I said, on Tamla Records, which I used to work a lot in the Brill Building in New York. And Tamla was right downstairs from where I used to work, upstairs with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. And I met him there at Tamla, and he wanted to sign me. And I went to lunch with him and with the manager I had, and they offered me five hundred dollars a week for the rest of my life. I said, "I have to go to the ladies' room." And I left, I went home (laughter). I mean I'm making like $250,000, $200,000 a year doing background. And he's going to offer me $500 a week? I didn't know what he was talking about. So, I left. So that stayed right there.
    - You had the opportunity to work with some of the Motown artists. Who were they?
    Well, I worked with, well, I worked with The Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas."

    Comparable to what Dionne Warwick was doing with Bachrach and David, but in Mary's case her record label did have the connections and savvy to promote her work adequately. Her disastrous decision to leave Motown based on promises of a film career proved tragic. Berry Gordy Jr. did everything under the sun to get her to stay but she would not listen. She left behind her numerous fabulous tracks which went right on to the Supremes. Had she stayed at Motown she would have continued to enjoy hit after hit. Please note that Berry Gordy and Motown did absolutely nothing to harm her or her career after she left. In fact, Motown put together a collection of rare and unreleased recordings in response to fans dying to hear more of what she had done at Motown.

    • @waynebrasler
      @waynebrasler Před 8 lety +4

      +2tonsolid No, she left because her husband and advisers gave her terrible advice to accept a contract from 20th Century records which would include a film career. She was young and inexperienced and did not realize that new label could not give her the material, production, promotion on consistent touring Motown did and that the film offer was just a common-on. Her career fell totally apart and never came together again. Berry and Smokey tried everything under the sun to get her to stay. When she left her best unreleased songs were rerecorded with the Supremes. Tragic.
