- I keep trying to rationalise the purpose of the Sonos Port. It's probably overpriced for what it does but if you are in the same boat, welcome to today's video where we try to figure out what we can do with the Sonos Port.
7 uses:
1. Output to Amplifier (variable output) using your own speakers
2. Transform your old analog equipment into Sonos streaming devices.
3. Stream music from your computer or NAS
4. Set up an external DAC for Sonos.
5. Connect TV to output sound
6. Set up Sonos Net
7. Add LDAC/APTX-HD bluetooth capabilities to your Sonos

Sounds like crap though.
It's for the convenience yes. But the quality is compressed. You have to spend quite a bit before you get anywhere near 'good' BT audio.
A lateral upgrade from the Connect for the most part. This little Port device and the concurrent deprecation of the original Connect pushed me right out of the Sonos ecosystem. The silver lining was that the Bluesound Node 2i which I wound up with is better in absolutely every possible way when directly compared to the Port.
Very honest review , I would have appreciated this sonos amp /port had the wireless capability to relay to beam and entire Sonos hometheater without any time lags from projector or anyoother source then people would have purchased this product with more interest
My use case:
Projector for use outdoors - garage and patio (social distancing)
RCA output from projector to port. I then combine connect port with a pair of Sonos Ones or any other speaker in range.
No delay or any issue. It's an expensive option but very convenient. I just zip tied the Port to the tripod and it's a rolling video and sound system.
Ha! Yes, it's a convenient option and like you said, expensive.
I’ll be using it in my project studio to playback recording and mixes I create to the rest of my Sonos system. Also, I will use it to do regular playback when I’m doing regular work in my office to my reference speakers.
Yeah, in that way it does bridge external sources into Sonos.

I love the great videos, they have been very helpful. I am stuck and wondering if you can help. I have 2 new Sonos play 5's connected to my turntable via RCA to 3.5 plug, I want to use my play 5s as front speakers and purchase a Sonos arc soundbar for my tv surround set up. In another video, you mention if you set up the 5's as surround speakers it disables the 3.5 line-in. I am trying to get the best of both worlds with tv surround and turntable. Would buying a port or Sonos amp be the workaround? Or, is it possible to set up multiple profiles in the Sonos for turntable vs TV and, or would I need to retune/setup the sonos speakers every time I want to listen to records vs movies?? I am not sure what route to go...thanks in advance for any advice.
Awesome job breaking this down. I have a question though, I got a Sonos Arc, Sub and 2 Play Ones and I’d like to connect them to my Denon S960H AVR which has TV and Game Console hooked up. How can I output audio through the Sonos system without having sync issues or compromising dolby effects?
Nice video. It is way overpriced and there are many reviews saying it has poor sound quality.
Yes, I agree on the pricing. The sound quality, it is probably a function of how much it deviates from the Sonos sound as the output stage and amp and speakers are all out of control from Sonos already.
Thank you for sharing the video. Can you do a video showing the Sonos Amp using HDMI out to another soundbar? I have an extensive Sonos ecosystem, but I have been given the Samsung q990c and would like to use ARC (not eARC) from the Sonos Amp to the Samsung soundbar to include the soundbar in my Sonos ecosystem.
Do you have experiences with providing the digital signal to an AVR? I heard opinions that the sound quality of the Sonos port is pretty poor and would like to use my NAD receiver. However I'm worried a bit that it is out of sync, when playing the Port and my Sonos move together. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the video, I’m still not sure, but I have the Sonos arc, sub and two ones also a nebula 4K laser projector. Would the Sonos port be a good fit to broadcast the audio from the projector to my existing Sonos speakers?

Wondering if you can help me with what I would like to accomplish: I have a Pioneeer home stereo system (receiver: VSX-4900S, 301 cd changer: PD-F1007, multi-cassette changer: CT-M6R - , and wired non-powered tabletop speakers). It is a standalone system, not digital, no bluetooth. I would like to be able to play cds with the changer and listen to them through bluetooth speakers, possibly using SONOS system. Is this possible with my set up?

Yes, Sonos is not known for bluetooth. They only have one BT capable device now, which is the Move.

Hi Peter. Would you have any advice on how to make the speech enhancement work on the Sonos arc? I just bought the arc about a week ago and I’ve tried different streaming services and cable TV with the speech enhancement is toggled on there is absolutely no difference when on or off. I thought I would ask you since you seem to have a lot of knowledge with Sonos products =]
Unfortunately, speech enhancement is a little too subtle. It has to be as it technically has only very small speakers for the center channel. I used to have to run a 300w amp powering a HUGE center speakers to get any form of likeable dialog. So, no, not really going to make a lot of difference on the Arc.
Can you confirm if this can connect to MDX-8/MDX-16 from anthem which power 8/16 zones speakers and sonos app will detect each of 8/16 zones separately. Each zone is one or more rooms in this setup. Thanks.

I have no access to the Arc SL but given that the only difference being that the mic is turned off and there's no voice assistant onboard, sonically, it should be identical.
When connecting to a home theater receiver that is driving a passive 5.1 setup, is it better to use the ports variable or fixed output?
I have the older Connect which I connected to my TV headphone output via the line input. This results in a slight video-audio delay (75 ms according to Sonos) but this never bothered me (or my wife who is very critical) in the 8 years I've been using this setup.
Oh! That lag irritated me. Including on the Sonos Five.

Hello Guys, do you know how can I connect my Sonos Beam, sub and a pair of One SL to my Macbook Pro M1 to get losless audio quality? I guess AirPlay must be using some sorts of compression. I dont have a TV to run through all the connections but I still would like to enjoy the full sound experience. Nobody talks about it really.

No, you will need a Sonos Amp, playbar, playbase, beam or the Arc. When I said 4.1, I meant specifically the setup with Sonos Amp as it doesn't have center channel.

Looking to get away from the Sonos app and play music on my sono1 and 3 from my google music app directly - via Bluetooth or wifi. The Sonos app causes chirps. It screws up my playlists. Does anyone know if the Sonos port + Audioengine B1 Bluetooth music receiver with 5.0 aptX HD is a good solution to achieve this? Or is there a better way? Thanks!

The Sonos Port can't do that. The Amp can. The amp can act as the heart of a HT setup.

Hi Peter! I have 12 Sonos speakers at home and I would like my DJ controller to sound on my system.
I’m planning to connect my DJ controller to a Sonos Port, and output to a pair of amplified Pioneer studio monitor speakers.
Will I always get a delay between my controller and speakers, if the audio goes through the Sonos Port? Is there any way to take advantage of a Sonos system as a DJ?
Hey Sebastian, you will definitely going to get a delay. And in your work, you will not be able to function with that lag. If I remember correctly, it will be at LEAST 75ms. The Analog to Digital convertor will take time to digitise the sound for Sonos.
Can you play any music off your phone through that system you showed for Bluetooth? Do you have to charge the Bluetooth receiver?
No. That Bluetooth receiver simply gets power form a usb cable.
Hey ;) question, the device description says- sonos port creates temporary bluetooth to help easely setup your system. So is it this sonos PORT ALOW TO USE BLUETOOTH NORMALY or just for set up ?? :)
It’s just for easier setup only (at least at this current firmware)
It's just for setup. Nothing in Sonos range now has Audio profile for Bluetooth, except for the Sonos Move.
Ah ok with no bluetooth sonos simply forcing us to use they apps. Simple :) yes sound is better Thru wifi but, not everyone is audiophile isnt it 😁 its not hard to add option to the system for using bluetooth. They did with comercial purposes

You mean DAC right? I don't have a lot of experience with DAC but a lot of people will want to spend a lot of money there. To me no need. But wait a minute... you want to connect a DAC to the port?

Need advice… I just added the Sonos amp to my system, previously I had my Sonos arc sound-bar HDMI into LG 77 C2 arc TV port, after adding the amp, the arc port on the back of the amp can I run the arc cable from the amp to the arc sound bar bypassing the TV?…. when I put an HDMI cable from the amp arc port to the TV arc port …I had echo sounding speakers over each other…. they’re not synced….any thoughts …the amp is driving ….two external Polk audio in ceiling speakers… when I added the amp I set it up as stereo, I can control the in ceiling speakers with the app…. So I’m most concerned about is whether or not I should keep the arc sound bar connected to the TV arc or connect the amp arc port straight to the sound bar bypassing the TV, that’s what I would like to know, any thoughts?
You can't connect the Amp with the Arc using the HDMI cable this way. The TV either goes to the Arc or the Amp.
What you can do, is to connect the Arc to the TV, then setup the Amp driving the ceiling speakers as surround speakers. In that way, both the Arc and the Amp will play together.
@@PeterPee so do I have to delete the Amp-that is in stereo pair right now …..then re-add it as surround sound?
How can I change the stereo pair to surround sound in another way?

Also, the amp is in a separate room won’t let me join the main Living Room, where all the other components are in… I had to name it. A separate room name would not let me join the main room.

No simple way to do it without a Sonos Port (which is expensive).

The Bose L1 has a line level input so yes you can. You will need the RCA to 3.5mm phono cable.

No, this work work. You can't get eARC without eARC tv. Unless you are using something from HDFury.
can external DAC or EQ be used with Sonos Port or Sonos AMP?
Yes, it depends on how you hook it up. You will have to setup the DAC/EQ before the PORT/AMP. But that depends on the available outputs from the DAC/EQ. That said, the Port and Amp will also alter the sound. Sonos products apply their own sound signature.

On my patio i have a sonos beam and 2 sonos one speakers. I also have a Sony receiver and Yamaha outdoor speakers. Can i connect this port to the receiver and play the same music on my sonos speakers on my patio and also on the outdoor Yamahas through the Sony receiver?
No. You won’t be able to play on the Sony receiver.
