Dr. Little gave a Master Class on how to handle a #1 song especially by Badu. JSU was ready for it. ASU's second song was really good even with the error and their Badu songs, I always look forward to hearing. JSU is AWESOME. TxSU is coming to town, be ready.
I know state had a deduction on it, but personally, I really enjoyed the Ultra Instinct theme song from Dragonball Z. Maybe I enjoyed it more because I knew what it was and never expected to hear them play it

I was looking forward to you judging this 5th. I am a Alum of Alabama State University and I was proud of the better showing than last years 5th. I loved the Dragon Ball Super song when Goku was going Ultra Instinct! You are right, they clean it up that song is a killer. Only band playing that one so they can own it with more practice.

I don’t think it was as bad as the scores seem , but with winner take all rounds or ties it’s understandable. Bama State has improved so much, just not enough to top Jackson.

I’m very, very newly into this, so I’m very objective about who’s got what. I was liking ASU’s arrangements. I found myself bopping along to the tunes… but definitely hear a fuller bodied sound in JSU. Even when the sounds weren’t so clear, they tended to even out quickly. It was also a bit more layered from JSU, imo. Where ASU felt more face value, if that makes sense. Like their tunes didn’t always go as deep. I think they both brought the energy, though!

This wasn't the only review video devs. LifewithNate had both bands equal. This is just one reviewer obviously surrounded by BOOM fans. JSU got away with alot but hey....to each its own. LifewithNates video points out issues with both bands. I love my boy but it just seems like all of JSUs flaws were skipped because of the shock and awe of JSU...

The crazy thing is that I thought ASU had the better song selection by far. JSU's trumpets know their roles and makes a difference. if ASU's trumpets were at least present, this could have gone either way. Minus the F up, they were smacking that DragonBall Z

I don't think they "play too much" but when you can actually hear what they are playing it might seem that way. That's the difference between leg tenors and chest tenors.

I actually like the direction Alabama State is headed. They just need a better game plan when A or B isn't working that's all. Play songs that their comfortable with and execute. I'm a fan of ASU and I'm looking forward to their growth.
