- How do you choose the right jig for walleye fishing? Have you ever stared at an entire wall of jigs wondering where to even begin? I created this video to break down jig styles into manageable pieces of information that will help you narrow your search so you can find the perfect jig for the job at hand. Whether it’s pitching jigs on a river system, snap jigging plastics on a natural lake, or dialing in the perfect live bait jig on a reservoir, this video will help you pick the perfect jig for your application. Check out any of the links below to compare jig colors, prices, styles etc. Also check out any of the plastics below to see the ones featured in this video.

I agree 100% with what was shared in this video. This presentation is one of the very best synopsis’ on jig qualities and applications produced. (particularly for the novice to using jigs). Couple items to add: In finesse, neutral to negative fish moods, most always try to use the lightest weight jig you can get by with; the reason being that it gives the walleyes just a bit more time to see the bait, but most importantly the lighter the jig the easier the fish has to “inhale” and get it into their mouth. Secondly, shortly after Northland Tackle introduced the Titanium Weed Guard Stand Up Jig a couple of years ago, I was at the factory in Bemidji and got to talking about that jig with a couple of pro-staffers. My suggestion to them was to offer that jig in “gold”. Their response was: “For sure, but you know what?” “Draw a line south of Brainerd, and few people know of the qualities of gold on catching walleyes”. We all agreed: “Seriously ??? !!!!” So a tip to everyone whom reads this: Use GOLD !!!!. Again, a great video this was.
Thanks for the extra tips! And yes. Gold is great!
This is arguably the best jig-head tutorial on CZcams. And that's saying a lot due to the vast amount of videos I watch on jig fishing and walleye presentations. There is no question that your teaching methods and calm but concise explanations are largely responsible for the lion's share of your subscriptions. I'm legitimately astounded that your channel does not have ten times the subs that it does right now. I'm rarely motivated to even sign in, let alone comment on videos such as this. I sub'd and I'm looking forward to binging on more of your content. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences.
Wow! Thanks for the great feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
How does this guy have less than 10k subscribers? Caleb your vids share so much useful info. Thanks for great content.
Haha thanks man. I’ve only been doing this a couple years but we are getting close to that 10k mark, which is awesome! Thanks for your support.

Thanks so much!
This is an outstanding fishing channel. For example, this video is an excellent jig tutorial. I enjoy the attention to detail and thorough content provided about the topics covered in your videos. I'm very surprised you don't have at least 100k subscribers. I live in the midwest and this channel has become my favorite fishing channel. I hope you continue the superb work you are doing with this channel. Thank you and best wishes for continued success.
Thanks so much! I appreciate that. I’m definitely working on creating the most informative content I can. I’m glad you are enjoying it!
Very detailed and informative - can't wait to get out there with this new knowledge. Thanks for sharing, great vid!
Thanks! I’m glad you found it helpful!
Your videos are the best man. Super helpful.
Thanks!! I try to give as much information as possible.
Great video. It was great to see a complete breakdown of jigs and showing the examples of the jigs in water.
Thanks!
Now this is the type of informative video I have been looking for. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your knowledge.
Awesome! Glad to hear you found it valuable!
After surfing through videos for 3 hours, this vid gave me everything I needed to know about jigs. This video alone covered everything 6 other separate videos missed or just didn’t explain very well. Beautiful job on the tutorial, would have saved me 3 hours if I found it earlier lol
That’s awesome! Thanks. Hey, could you do me a favor? What were some of the search terms you were putting into CZcams search to find a video like this? Maybe I can optimize the wording in the description better if I know exactly how you were searching for this video. Then people who are looking for it like you were could find it easier.
Great video. Thanks for all the detailed info you won’t find elsewhere!
Glad you liked it!
Wow. Great action presentation video! Great explanations on all the details as well.
Walleye was always a dream-fish to catch and eat but I never caught one as a kid in Wisconsin.
We use lots of jigs in Hawaii in the saltwater and the things you explain here as far as action, color, hook-gap, etc., definitely apply anywhere you’re trying to fool a fish in the water, no matter where you are in the world. Fish brains are pretty much the same.
Conditions are different but changing with them is the key.
Great video as usual! 🤙🏼
Thanks! Yep, it’s applicable anywhere. Tight lines man!
Great video and footage, we are slowly getting a few of these soft baits and jigs in New Zealand,, thanks and greetings,, Tony.

Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, czcams.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.
🙏
For a seemingly simple topic this had information one may know but not focus on. Thank you for sharing 😊

As someone who fishes norther Saskatchewan’s Canadian Shield lakes including one that is full of flooded timber I will definitely agree a light wire ball head jig is handy.
Always considered myself to be reasonably well versed in jig fishing over any other type of fishing but I learned a couple things.
Good deal! Yes, a light wire makes a big difference in wood over.
Im glad you got into stinger hooks! Some times you gotta weed through a 100 small one's to get a slot keeper! But when you are fishing for table-fare its worth it! Thanks!
Yep. For sure. Thanks for the view and tight lines!

Haha, one of the best comments yet! Thanks man.
I believe the correct term is jigonometry.
Great video…Nice job man! 👍🏻

Wow. As previously said, this is a great jig-head video. I know this will help with my walleye catching. I can also see an application of your tips for my new hobby of tying walleye hair jigs using standard lead ball jigs. I have started using plyers and flat metal to re-shape or flatten the sides of the lead ball heads to more of a pill shape so I can paint then and glue eyes on the sides. I think I can also create some of the other shapes you discuss using lead ball head jigs and plyers. I am walleye fishing with my daughter May 12-15, 2024.. I can hardly wait to try out some of your tips. Thanks so much for the video.
Awesome and thanks very much!

Very informative - great presentation - keep it up
Thanks very much!
Enjoyed the presentation, very informative. So have one complaint or suggestion, kill the background noise on videos that consist of you talking. Some of us have.a hard time separating the human voice from unnecessary noise and that is all background noise is, no matter how faint.Other than that, I did learn some good points and that makes your video a success.
Thanks for the feedback. I’ve gotten similar comments from others and have since used much less background music in my more recent content.

Excellent, thorough presentation! I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about walleye fishing or jig fishing from the bank on a 1600+ acre lake in summer.
Thanks! Stay tuned because I’m working on a video about how to catch walleyes from shore soon!
@@calebwistad Thanks for the reply because not everyone does. I'm a diehard catch and release trout fly fisherman, but when conditions are in survival mode for trout in hot temps and low water, I let them rest until fall and hope others would as well. I am looking forward to lake toothy critter fishing, but like many of us, I can't justify buying another boat. Had one several years ago, and the two best days were when it was bought and then finally sold. I'm hungry to know how to shore fish for walleye, as well as Esox, esp. in summer.
I decided to watch this so I could critique the video, but wow man, you did a wonderful job!!!! 🤙🏼 You got my sub any day bud!
That’s an awesome compliment! Thanks so much.

Great video man, I usually don't watch clips that long to the end, to much chirping about nothing, but yours was done right, good job !
Thanks! That’s quite a complement.
Nicely explained! Thanks for the tutorial. Whats your favorite line set up for walleye?
Thank you! My favorite line setup for walleyes is 10 lb Sufix 832 in hi-vis green with a 8lb Seaguar flourocarbon leader.
great video
Thank you.
I wish you were in Missouri. I'd take you down to Truman Lake with me. I'm going to be fishing both above and below the dam this week for walleye. Can't wait to try out some of these jig types. Great stuff man.
Thanks so much! Wish I could. We don’t have an open walleye season here for a couple months yet.
if you ever get to come to Missouri give me a shout and I will take you out and show you around. @@calebwistad
Observer approved video. One thing you should have covered is when to tie directly to the jig or use a snap and why!
Thanks! I personally never use snaps with jigs or even loop knots. I tie direct to jigs 100% of the time. Not sure if I’m missing out on something but I’ve always liked doing it that way.
If I had to pick one jig for river walleyes it would be a long shank round ball. I can buy them cheap bulk and the bronze hook bends easy. Med light rod and 6# mono will float an 1/8oz jig and 4” plastic ringworm or slim paddle tail at the perfect rate for 90% of small river fishing. I rarely switch to 3/16 but will with bulkier plastics. I catch a hundred walleyes ever year on just a lead colored jig.
That’s the old standby and it sure does do the trick!
Great presentation! 17:21
Thank you! 🙏
🤣Great video as always

Wow, great video, though. Thx!

@@calebwistad medium :)
Love your channel. Is that a carving of the fish or a mount?
Thanks so much! That’s a skin mount of a 22” brook trout that I caught, mounted and painted myself. I did taxidermy for about 10 years on the side.
I really enjoyed your asides (mentioning purple as a great color option for dark days and gold as an all around) my question: twister tails... up or down, I'm usually up but I've seen guys have them pointing down, what's your take and why?
Thanks! I always point twister tails down. I believe the action is a little better when the tail isn’t following the hook and the line tie. It’s probably not a huge deal, but it works for me.
Awesome video! Thanks for the help. One question about trout?! How heavy does the fly have to be when fishing with a spinning rod set up. Mine doesn’t seem to cast very far at all
The key is to use bead head nymphs and fish them behind a small split shot, much like you would do with a worm or minnow.
You can also use weighted/water bobbers to cast them further
It's a super great video. On crappie fishing, I found I had to open the gap on the hook to get more consistent hookups... Why?
Thank you. Maybe your jig hooks re too small. Opening the gap helps on smaller jig hooks to catch the roof of the mouth better. You can probably upsize your hooks and get away without bending them.
Not a single word about the exquisite national dance of Ireland. 😢
You would be surprised how much I know about that jig too! I used to play in a Celtic/Irish Folk band believe it or not. 😆
Walleyes can see the color orange, better than any other color, hands down. Now just that they see that color better doesn't mean that's the best color, on any given day, they can be picky. I do best with white not charteuse, most of the time I use white or orange.
Good tip!
what color or jig presentations for cloudy days? you probably said it but I didn't catch it. you mentioned blades, gold , silver for sunny days I think.
Typically dark colors. Blacks, browns and purples.
Excellent video, when your fishing jigs with plastic on do you ever add a minnow to it ?
Thanks! Funny you should ask. We used to fish twister tails with a minnow all the time growing up. I really haven’t fished live bait with plastics at all lately though. I’ve had such good luck with plastics alone and you can get more casts in if you aren’t re-baiting all the time. There are days where live bait really shines too but I rarely pair them anymore.
Many times the plastic is molded to have specific motion in the water. Poor attachment to the hook/jig other bait can interfere with the intended movement and appear unnatural.
Gréât explanation ,do toi have the name of the. Orange worm and rib tail
Thanks! Yes, that’s a B Fish N Moxie.
This last year has been horrible with thick algae growth. I swear the way to get bit was to hit them on the nose. What’s best in pea soup? BTW, the lake is only 5-6’ deep.
I like a tungsten ball head. Less aerodynamic so it moves more water and the tungsten clanks around more when it bounces off rocks and such.
Just wondering have you ever used a loop not to keep your jig from going sideways..
Yes, sometimes I do, but I prefer to have the knot tight on the line tie most of the time.
Anyone try meegs jigs for walleye? Some guy made them for ice fishing whitefish on lake simcoe but they might be good for walleye too
They’d work great if walleye are feeding directly on the bottom.
I've got some chartreuse pepper fat albert. Should I use a 1/8 or 1/4oz jig for 20+ feet of water for walleye?
Definitely at least a 1/4 oz and I would maybe even go 3/8
@@calebwistad thanks!! I’ll be on Wind Lake visiting family in a few weeks. Gonna try to catch my first Wisconsin Walleye!
Do you have to bounce a jig, or can you just reel them straight in?
I vary my retrieve and try to figure out what the fish want.
What about using the floating jig head, how to use it?
I may have to make another video entirely on floating jig heads!
Floating heads are used to position the bait a specific distance from the bottom. Often a 3-way or Lindy rig will have a weight to drag on the bottom and the jig will float above that. Detecting strikes can be even more difficult in these rigs though...
Good info But when using a stinger you will find that it catches more fish if you let it swing freely
I somewhat agree. Depends on the bait you are using. Some baits action is hampered if you bury the stinger in it, others it does if you let it swing free.
رائع
🙏
Great video! At the 7:40 mark what kind of plastic is that?
Thanks! That’s a Castaic Jerky J.
I never do well with jigs. I always catch them on sub floating jerkbaits. I'd like to do better with jigs. I always lose my jigs in the rocks. It's very frustrating.
Maybe this video will help!
1 The lead is covered in paint, 2 The lead is not ingested. They would be toxic is the walleye swallowed them, that being said we've used lead sinkers forever and fish are not dying from lead poisoning, so Toxic is extreme. So as with society lets not paint a catastrophe where none exists. Other than that thanks for the info it was very helpful.
I was not describing a catastrophe, nor was I talking about fish being impacted by the lead. I was merely saying that tungsten is more environmentally friendly than lead because lead is indeed a toxic metal. It’s primarily birds that end up ingesting lead when taking in gravel for their crops. Do I think it’s an emergency and we should ban lead in fishing tackle like California did? Absolutely not. I think it should be up to the individual if they want to use lead or go a different route and tungsten just gives a nice option for those who are concerned about environmental impact. Do I personally choose tungsten over lead purely for environmental reasons? No. I do not.
i heard in the old days they just used this for bait 🧨 Toss ! - - - Plunk ! ~~ 💥 ~~🐟🐟🐟🐟~~~~~~ hahahaha !
I believe it! 😆
If you find hungry walleye it won't matter color or type of jigs, anything will works
I wish they were always hungry!
Do you find that walleyes will bite off your line being that they do have teeth?
Nope, surprisingly walleyes have pretty dull teeth.
@@calebwistadNow that’s an interesting question. I wonder what pike, muskie, and walleye teeth look like under a scope.
Walleye teeth are spread much farther apart than say, northern pike; thus the line goes between the teeth and does not get “scissored” from instant abrasion.@@canadiangemstones7636
S sir please tell me how to catch a snakehead fish. Vikram from Bharat
If you know that you are fishing in a place that has snakehead, I would look for shallow weeks and cast top water frogs or seedless swimbaits. A live minnow or shiner is sure to catch them too.
Im curious why you didnt include floating jigs.
Might have to do another video!
Its all good. Thanks
What under water camera is that???
GoPro hero 9 black.
where is your gulp minnows grub 3"?
Haha, you know, I used to use gulp quite a bit but I honestly haven’t touched the stuff in a couple years. It works though.
What about a floating jig
I’ve had several inquiries about floating jigs. I think I’ll be doing a video on them next spring so stay tuned!
You didn't mention hair jigs.
Nope, that’s going to be for another video!
No offense but I think it would be more beneficial if you would do constant close-up recording while you're talking.
Ok. Lol. Maybe I shouldn’t blink either.
