  • A barge crashed into a bridge on the Texas coast on Wednesday, forcing the closure of the only roadway to a small island off the city of Galveston and spilling oil into the river.
No injuries were reported and the Pelican Island Bridge, almost 100 kilometres southeast of Houston, remained standing after the barge ran into it.
The collision comes amid heightened concerns in the U.S. about the vulnerability of bridges after a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March, killing six people and resulting in its collapse.

This is just to add, I am a full bore conspiracy theorist. I think last month’s eclipse and the aurora borealis in Arkansas the other night were both staged. I just don’t no nothin about water systems. And I am not worried about the water. I won’t drink it cuz I drink Perrier. So lay off.

Well, given the bayous and waterways in that area, the oil spill might be an improvement in water quality... Remember that just upstream of this bridge is most of the refineries in North America. Stay at home orders for accidental release of chlorine gas is common in that area, there are subdivisions where tap water can be ignited...

It seems like a pretty stupid way to transport fuel in the first place. I wonder if like large ships, a barge is required to be Double-Hulled ? I'm sure the energy/fuel company has lobbied to have as few restrictions and overhead costs as possible.
Furthermore, any navigable waterway that has vessels over a certain size (to be determined accordingly) should have piles or bollards to prevent collisions with bridge structural elements. Maximum Vessel weight and/or dimensions should be posted on the bridge. It seems lazy and cheap that this hasn't been done for far too many brides in the USA.

The Pelican Island Causeway is in NO way a "key" transportation asset. It can easily be temporarily replaced by a spare ferryboat or two from Port Aransas just like the Port Isabel Causeway was when it got knocked into the water by a barge tow in September 2001. In addition to some shipyards and tank farms, Pelican Island also has the Texas A&M university Galveston campus and a public park with two World War Two US Navy vessels you can visit. What's your actual point?

Who owns the barge that hit the bridge in Galveston?
      Martin Petroleum.
"The captain has 20 years of experience" ~ Martin Petroleum
The part that was hit, was garbage, part of an unused rail track, while the bridge itself is garbage that was scheduled to be rebuilt in 2025 anyway. THANKS TO PRESIDENT BIDEN'S INFRASTRUCTURE BILL.

What are you if you intentionally ignore the fact that bridges get knocked off their piers ALL the time? Port Isabel Causeway was knocked into the Intracoastal Waterway just a few days after 9/11/01 by a barge tow and you probably never heard a word about it. We lose a few road bridges here in Flash Flood Alley every damn year. Heck, a flash flood knocked the heavy steel footbridge into the wet weather creek at my tiny Hill Country ranch a few months ago.
