Live Review: DPA 4055 vs AUDIX D6 as heard through the PA

- We ask Jared and Chris their thoughts about the sound of the DPA 4055 and the AUDIX D6 kick drum microphones during soundcheck/show at a local outdoor church event. Using the 3Dio FS Pro II binaural mic, you can hear what we were all hearing if you wear headphones! Main PA was the Nexo STM system with a Yamaha CL5 console.
D6 is basically for situations where you just plug n play and u get a great sound from the get go. DPA is more for engineers who would like to sculpt their own kick sound, being a more natural and open mic, you can do this. With the right EQ you can probably make a DPA sound pretty close to the D6.🤘🏻
Overall, I definitely liked the D6 WAY better. I generally like my kicks tight and punchy and that's exactly what the D6 does! The DPA sounded a lot more 'loose' and not as crisp to me, so didn't drive the energy nearly as much. I could see using the DPA either in a studio where you have a lot more time to fine-tune the signal or in a gig that's more 'chill' like an acoustic or folk set or something along those lines.
I hear more punch with the D6 (especially in the mix) and the 4055 does has more sub bass. It honestly sounds very similar to the dynamic and condenser elements in the Audio-Technica AE2500 from tests I've done. From experience, the dynamic+condenser thing really seems to work. Doubt anyone has $600 to spare for a kick mic but I really like it. Great video as always!
The D4 sounds similar, it isn't a true tone, but it does give a fun "bouncy" sound to floor tom
The D6 makes it sound like a good kick drum. DPA sounds too washy, as if it was a cheap kick with loose drum heads IMO
There’s a good reason why the D6 has been an industry standard for so long. As Jared mentions in the video, you can mic a cardboard box with it and it’ll sound alright! I think though that really experienced engineers are ready to begin shaping their own sound with modern processing technology, especially with digital consoles. Basically, listening to the DPA is kind of like tasting the raw ingredients in the kitchen. If you’re a high-end chef, you want access to the raw ingredients so you can cook from scratch!
That's the key with the DPA, you can hear just how the drummer has chosen to tune his kick.
Based on the comments below, most "sound guys" prefer Thump verses Fidelity. Now do the same comparison with studio guys. I'm guessing the Thumper would not be the preferred mic.
As always, it depends on what you're looking for. The main difference is that the D6 is EXTREMELY coloured, while the DPA is definitely more linear (it still has a bit of character, of course). The D6 is a plug and play microphone, amazing for 90% of studio applications and especially suited for live applications (imho). You'll barely need to tweak anything when using it live, it already has a lot of punch and click. Try using it for a jazz band and you'll get everything wrong, though. The DPA is great if you need a more neutral sound. Personally I own a D6 and I indeed use it most of the times, but you can't rely exclusively on it.
They're definitely distinct on their own, but in the context of the mix at 2:38 the difference is night and day

While you might enjoy earthshaking low bass frequencies of the DPA, when using subwoofers - or any kind of speakers, that are capable of playing well in the deep registers, still the "full meat" of those higher bass frequencies from the D6 "translates" much better on audio systems, that are lacking some deep bass, where the DPA gets remarkably lost, here!
... just saying, after totally having experienced it "in the mix", when comparing with both of my systems, one being Quested VS2108s, the other being small built-in-speakers of an iMac. But...that said:
"Live" you typically are using subwoofers and you might get the kick well below - out of the boxy (low-mid)-way - with the DPA, so when you later would mix a recording of it, you could carefully recreate those missing "higher lows" with a plugin, like Waves MaxxBass or so..
D6 guys. Save your money.
The D6 has a tighter, more punchy sound. The 4055 is more natural and sits in the mix better. I think both mics are great.
As a drummer I prefer the D6 sound. The D6 always needs a higher trim setting...it is not a "hot" signal.
great test... I've never heard the DPA in real-life but... in al the videos is saw (heard) I've preferred an D6/Beta52/e902/V-Kick. My personal favorite (wich I all used live/studio und did my own A-B tests) so far is (in this order) e902/Beta52/D6 (if it's a dynamic Bassdrum-Mic). I'm also big fan of the e901 and Beta91. I don't know why but the DPA sounds always like "hm... all that Midrange I always cut... I have to cut it more with the DPA. But great test... I have to test the DPA in real-life

If you are going to take the 4055 and cut all the mids, then get the D6, save yourself 5 minutes of setup time, and ~$600.

Doesn't it all pretty much depend on if you want to fiddle with the EQ or have a kick sound great straight away? If you want to fiddle, then honestly a 57 would do just fine for 99 bucks.
they both were really good, certain qualities, the dpa had nice thump, but didn't have the click and low mids the d6 had

The d6 is a pretty good mic the DPA just a bit too much in the mid range with the rest of the instruments. Could you compare the Sennheiser 902
And the Telefunken M82.
I don't hear the dpa sounding twice as good..yet it's over twice the price. It sounds different...but not two times objectively better.

The 4055 sounds way tighter, cleaner and more natural to me, but I'm only listening on Lipinski L-700 mastering monitors, so IDK.. Youtubhe destroys quality anyway.
the D6 has a firm opinion, and is a very safe opinion for many genres, but if you want the most control as an engineer the 4055 is the obvious choise
@@riknos3289 Great summary. Both are incredible mics, but serve different purposes.
On rock, dance , or pop, the D6 is just perfect. The DPA would be great in a more open mix .
