That photo at 11.27! Absolutely breathtaking.
I have a few Mantra when it comes to creating images, "Every photograph taken is a lesson learned, (If you care to learn the lessons.) Never take just one image, take at least 6, zoom in & out, move position left & right & last BUT not finally, KEEP ON TAKING THE PHOTOGRAPHS.
BTW I love your style of photography.
Thanks Doug, and I completely agree :)
You've very quickly become one of my favourite photographers and an inspiration for my ambition in landscape photography. The benefit your videos and e-book are already having on my photography are far bigger than any hardware upgrade, which every beginner seems to think is the answer to good photography!
Stormy weather is the best weather!
I absolutely love your photos in those conditions.
I’ve made many of these errors in my works... and learn from them constantly. The trick is also not to be too hard on yourself. Pick up your camera and move on to the next composition...
I like to post photographs on my Instagram feed that I like, and don’t follow any trends. For me it’s a huge flavour of what I do... it inspires me and give me an annual story board of where photography has taken me for 12months... thanks again for tour video 🙏🏼
Totally agree with #1 on your list Mads. Now I am in the fortunate position to have retired, getting out more in the last few months has been of a benefit as its given me the chance to take more images and learn more from the mistakes made and to embrace the conditions.
Hi, Mads! Thanks for posting this video. As always, I learned a lot from it. I appreciate your taking the time to help me and others grow!
Your points about wide-angle distortion were particularly great, Mads. Thanks as always!
Totally agree with not following rules. I took some wide angle shots of architecture this weekend, and I love the distortion! Wouldn't dream of changing it to please others.
Appreciate your comment on not correcting distortion. I like your uncorrected versions better. My raw editor automatically detects my lens and corrects some distortion. I can try turning it off to make those decisions myself, then.
Thank you so much for the information and lessons you give us amateur photographers
Hey Mads, I usually turn to you for photography instruction, but after just having the worst morning with work and family stuff and being totally stressed out, I thought maybe I’d listen to Mads talk about photography over ambient classical music for a few minutes. Not only did I learn something as always, but I can feel my pulse slowing down while I stare at the beautiful photos of Iceland. Who knew how multi-faceted and useful a channel this was??
What a wonderful tutorial! Thank you so very much.
Thank you Mads
Spot on Mads. How can one improve if one does not go out. I have been out in 38 to -34 and never regret it. To get unique images adverse conditions help a lot.
Very thoughtful discussion. Excellent point on the use of distortion.
Inspiring and "EPIC" video, Mads. Your compositional technique is truly outstanding. I am more than happy to recommend you to my photographic friends. Keep up the good work.
Just started to watch your vlogs and they are superb! very informative and very well produced, thank you!
Awesome video thankyou. I like tip number 5. After all photography is an art form so therefore everyone sees the images differently. Leaving the lines in those 2 photos converging gave so much more impact and told more of a story, especially the one with the old house. It is amazing how different an image can look depending on what device you're viewing it on
I think I committed last 3 mistakes on my recent trip to Iceland. Didn’t realize at all until I started looking on my big screen 😀. Thank you as always!
This is soooooo good. Thank you Mads for these reminders. Nicely done.
Thanks a lot, Joseph! Appreciate it :)
Great video Mads with amazing examples....
Thank you, Nigel! Means a lot 🙏
I can't agree more with you, never thought about different devices might have that difference in colours, i know they have but never thought about it when processing my photos, what can we do about?! Very little. The #1 is my biggest mistake, "it's too cold" "not in the mood" "tomorrow i will go out" these are my biggest reasons lol!
Great simple tips that serve as a reminder to more experienced photographers as well as newcomers, at least I thought so. Thank you
Really appreciated the examples used to illustrate the concepts.
Great to hear! Thanks, Francois! :)
I do only black and white that's what I love.
Don't care if others don't like my work, important is that you get out in nature off city making foto's and learn from your mistakes
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you, I found this really informative and inspiring. I like your delivery too - really clear.
Thank you, Rob! Means a lot :)
Those are excellent photos, even if edited. Great composition, choice of light and being determined to 'getting out there.' thanks for sharing!
Impressive video and great advice. Thank you.
Excellent reminders! Now about intention: I might be confusing intention w expectation. I try to go out without any expectations; trying to being open to whatever I experience or see. I play w my images in post processing; and often times it is only then that MY version of my vision comes alive; often times in black & white.
That buttermere shot of the lone tree is my favourite of your images mads 👍👍👍
I enjoyed this video a lot! Thanx!
Inspirational as always. 🧐
Very informative and helpful. Thank you , so much.
Great advice Mads!
Definitely agree with the issues relating to the different screen types and how they reproduce the images.
What looked good on my desktop edit did not look the same via my iPad.
Thanks for sharing again Mads.
You're welcome, John. Yes, it really can be a big issue if you're not aware of the differences.
Some good examples Mads.thnx
Very informative and good tips. Thanks for the video.
Great video! Love the 5th one - so many people are falling for “pleasing the others” trap...
Yeah, I guess that can work for some, but it'll just be tiresome in the long run ;)
A great video Mads well explained and all true
On the money, Mads.
Thanks.
Well explaned.
Especially like tip no. 1. Even I know it’s true and found this out myself, it is hard to always stick to it.
Even if I didn't learn from your videos - and I always do - I would watch them for the fabulous photographs you take. Thank you and cheers from DownUnder.
Excellent. Especially #5 - different than what I’ve heard elsewhere. Thank you for such thoughtful material
Thanks a lot, happy to hear it's something different :)
Like your examples with explanation, thx!
Yes, I see it! Your phone displays photos with a slight magenta cast.
The problem with oversaturated photos is that it ignores the fact that landscapes don’t just shout, they also whisper.
Very much true :)
Landscape photography is very subjective. One persons wonderful photo is another's through away, so to say a photo is a mistake is a little misleading I believe.
In fact one might think that the "small person in a big landscape" photos that you show might be an overdone image. But you like them, so great.
When I taught photography I would always say "here's something to think about" or "what would it look like this way".
Taking any form of photography ( landscape in this case ) is never a mistake.
Just my 2 cents worth, your images are very nice.
Around 9:50, when you talk about colours of greens, and you say that on the screen and the Android phone they look more similar, very weird but for me the phone screen looks more yellow than either of the two others!
For the B&W photo, similar to me.
What a great series of tips! I've really learnt a lot. Thank you so much👍👍👍👍
You're welcome, Horacio. Happy to hear that :)
Thank you Mads enjoyed the Vlog a lot, some points weighted more than others but all carried points I should consider. Thanks again
You're welcome, John! Yeah, I guess it's hard to make a strike on all of them ;)
Great information ‘ very well explained
Great tips.
stunning
Hi Mads. Thanks for another inspiring video. Your advice is never obvious, the last piece is the most important from my standpoint. My pics are on my walls and in my photo books, I'm an amateur but never tire of improving and I see it coming also from turning your advice into daily habits. Keep doing these wonderful and thought provoking videos. We all need to be reminded that the most important thing is to answer the question“what matters for ME? Does this picture talk about me or could it have been taken by just anyone?” Ciao 🤗
Thanks a lot, Francesca, very happy to hear you like these videos. More will come for sure :)
thanks
Very nice, amazing video
Man, that last one hit me right in the feels
Great, lol ;)
#1will ne important as I’m on the way Iceland now and lookint at lots rain in the forecast. I may miss the aurora, but there’s still a lot of opportunity!
I'm the opposite I stay in if its dry and bright. Love the rain and mist
Number 1 is the biggest of all! I had many task to complete this autumn and only made a point to get out twice
and missed much of the autumn foliage. Tomorrow is not a given promise......Enjoy each day!
Very thought provoking. I think we all fall into the traps of these mistakes at some point!
Ken Clark these are all VERY common mistakes! Well addressed!
Beeindruckende Fotos und Videoszenen. Man sieht das Du wirklich was von Fotografie und Videografie verstehst. Ganz klar Daumen hoch und liebe Grüße - Dietmar
Excellent! Will show at one of my next photo group meetings! Thank you
You're very welcome! Hope you'll all enjoy it :)
Voldsomt god video Mads! Så nyttig og brugbar viden! Tak for det :)
Tusind tak, Rasmus! Det er jeg glad for at høre :)
Great video.
Thank you for your insight. I have seen my skills increase just by going out more often. I love how you always come back to the point in honoring photography as an art and to be true to oneself. I joined instagram a few months back but find my energy can take a left turn - is this a good photo to print? when should I post it to get more likes? how do i submit a story.......... I fight it and do not like when i get sucked into it. I am in the process of finding my voice/style and dont want it shaped but what i think people like - Isn't the idea that art and creativity is to set oneself free?
Thanks, Eileen. I think art is what you make it. It comes in many different forms and shapes. If Instagram bugs you down it's probably a good idea not to worry too much about it :)
Thanks for the advert for our UK weather!! lol
Great video! I see it like you, Mads: Taking photos at poor conditions adds definitely to the images! A compelling composition presupposed ;)
iLike it ! great video 👍👍👍
You could call that video ‘that’s you that is, Steve’ 😬😆😆. Two thoughts, absolutely agree regarding the distortion, the prison could work either way although I prefer the closed in look but when I saw that hut before I thought the distortion was inspired. Secondly, the ‘you wish’ was gold 👏😂😂
Keeping fit. A mistake I think I make is thinking I am fitter than what I really am and taking too much equipment with me. Plan better and less is more 😬 👍 Derek. Sydney.
Keeping fit, very much, yes!
Thanks Mads for these tips..... the moment in the video with magician Mads was hilarious :)
Really like your videos. I’m learning a lot! Can you recommend a ND filter, circular? How many stops? Variable or Solid? I know you useKase, but those are out of my budget. I’m looking for something under $100. Thank you
For the leading lines in the forest, would it be better to wait until there were no shadows or have the shadow leading toward or close to the center of the photo (if it's possible to have that)?
awsome ! .... I would make mistake number 5 the first
Thanks, Gil! Yeah, but now you won't ;)
I gave up on watching videos titles titled similar to yours, " the x-most mistakes to avoid", "mistakes beginners make", etc. They all regurgitate again and again the same mostly obvious stuff. But yours are different; yours always include something unexpected, things you find only through thinking thoroughly about the effect photos have on us humans, like your last point, about correcting distortion. You should have a lot more subscribers!!
BTW, have you ever intentionally added distortion to one of your pictures?
Thanks a lot, Achim! Means a lot. I really try to make something that not all other people talk about. They all just copy the most popular stuff. Only very few bring something new to the scene.
I haven't added distortion intentionally, but I often use the liquify tool in Photoshop for different purposes :)
Thanks, Mads! I struggle with #4 a lot. What do you use to calibrate your monitor at home?
Great tips man. For some reason your phone had a big magenta color cast to it. At least viewing on my 4K TV. Could just be the angle of viewing or screen protector or something. Lol
I do take photos sometimes that look very uninteresting on the camera screen but knowing when I make the shoot what my camera is capable of I make them look interesting in post, at least more interesting :D That is in my opinion where the artistic privileged of the photographer kicks in.
Then about likes, I usually get less likes on pictures that I really like but doing photography as a living (photography tours) I need to try to follow the trend to get more likes which might eventually give me more customers.
The bad weather photo from Skógafoss is btw probably the best photo I have seen from that location.
You have talked about before in your video about having a person in the photo to show scale, that is a very popular trend now which in your case is in my opinion OK since you do not have a yellow raincoat :P There are way to many photographs where the main focus becomes the yellow or red raincoat
Spot on mate, i think learning from your mistake is one of the best ways you can improve.
Great video, Mads. I must admit, I’m guilty of point number one! Sometimes I just can’t bring myself to go out because of the weather...I know I should though.
Hehe yeah, I think we all are. So many other things to do right? ;)
0:50 where is it? It looks amazing
faroe
@Insta_Repeat is one of my favorite IG accounts because it helps me learn what NOT to shoot. Great tips overall!
Your...'You wish...' Made me laugh a lot.... 😅
Great tips. Thanks
Perfect! 🤣
The monitor that you are usind for editind is the Dell we saw at the video?
Yes, that's the one. All my photos eventually gets through that :)
@@MadsPeterIversen So you do recommend it? I see it is budget friendly monitor.
Will the book be on sale during Black Friday?
Mads, I don't understand how not checking on different screens is a "mistake"? I mean, what can you do about that? Whatever you do to the image to improve it on one screen will do something different on another screen. It seems that all you can do is make the picture just how you like it on a colour accurate screen and just hope it still looks ok on other people's?
Absolutely love the snowdonia national park picture 👏🏼 would you be kind enough to share the coordinates? Would love to see in person!
Or the peak name. I don’t think this is snow don peak?
I’ve found ir
Only 5? what happened to the other 50? lol. excellent subject Mads! good advice
Hehe thanks, Adam. You and me both know we shouldn't put all our gold in one video 🤣
Honestly thought, click bate - absolutely loved the distortion angle.
"You wish" : )
Here’s a technical question, Mads: I know you’re a Sony guy now like me-how far do you push your A7R3 in the rain? Do you use a rain sleeve or have you let it get pretty wet? I’m so paranoid about what everyone says about the bad Sony weather-sealing that I rarely take my cameras out in the rain these days (but I want to!).
It happens it's dripping 😬 but it's no guarantee it'll hold up. I never use rain sleeves. Just make sure to insure your camera ;)
Mads Peter Iversen Hmmm, interesting Mads. I never even thought of insurance!
Granted the same image can look different on different devices, my question is: what can you do about it? Where is the mistake?

. . . . .
Says to not follow social media trends, constantly shows photos of Iceland, lol. All kidding aside I love your photography. Just one question, I struggle a lot with the light conditions in which I edit/view my photos. Looking at them in a dark room gives a totally different experience from looking at them outside for example. They look too bright or dark and then I don't know which way I should go about it. Any comments, recommendations on that? Cheers.
Yeah, Iceland is just so beautiful! :)
I usually make my final decision during the dark hours and keep adjusting it over the next days and look it at different devices :)
Agreed, a bucket list item for sure! Thx for the advice!
Une question: pour tes silhouettes, tu utilises une télécommande?
Qu'est-ce c'est, une télécommande? En anglais, s'il vous plait... Merci.. jan
Remote control
@@TheMarcao93 merci..
Jibberjabber! Heeheehee
I'm so guilty of #1. Maybe it's because after seeing all these splendid photos of breath taking locations around the globe it makes everything close by seem so boring and uninspiring. :) On another note, is there a filter system/brand that you could recommend to a casual shooter?
Yeah, people kinda complained the same about me. But just watch my Tales series. That's not epic ;)
I personally really like the filters from Kase :)
@@MadsPeterIversen Thanks! I'll be sure to give then a look. Keep the videos coming!!
i would take your bad weather (gloominess, rain, snow) over the weather I have in SoCal which is 11 months of cloudless smog filled skies and no clouds, no rain, no fog.
I disagree with the diagonal lines tip. The shadows add a 3d element to the photo that would not be accomplished otherwise.
