    I’m in barber school. I did a bunch of cuts today because a few of the barbers called out… my school turned into a internship just like that!! I stepped up to the challenge and learned a lot by taking those walk in clients..

    I think that whatever choice you make as a beginner Barber is good, weather you choose to be an Apprentice or to go to barber school. It all depends on you if your willing to go the extra mile in order to accomplish your goal as a Barber.

      I agree to a certain extent, depending on who you are, or what situation you're in. one choice can definitely be preferred over the other. But no matter what learning never stops, it's not where you come from, but where you're going that matters.

  • @TetyV
    @TetyV Před 5 lety +1

    Either way you have to learn the skill from another person and you have to practice a lot to become good. No matter how long you are in the industry, everyday you learn something new. Practice makes perfect. Personally I like going to school first then practising what I learned. I think taking on going classes is also good. Some people don't have the money to go to school so being an apprentice works for them. Doesn't matter how many classes you take if you don't have it in you, you won't be good. School only teaches you the basics it's up to you to expande and grow your knowledge.

    • @KevvThaw
      @KevvThaw  Před 5 lety +4

      My point exactly. No matter which system you choose you are being taught by someone. And a classroom is any space where a class is conducted, a barbershop can be a classroom. it doesn't have to be condensed to a white board an desks. As long as the learning is practical and applicable than it's fair game. And i agree, if you don't work at it, neither one works. the priority is knowledge after all.

    My barber school was different we had a teacher tha would prepare us to know how to do evey type of cut how to cut all types or hair types, learn about sanitation and infection control so you dont harm your clients from the eveyday practices. We had a buisness class on how to operate and run our own barber shop and we would present out buisness plan by the end of barber school. By other professionals and get feed back. I leaned alot and i didn't have to struggle when i got out from school. It was hands down the best school and I'm glad i did.

And some of the things I’ve done just came naturally. I enjoy cutting hair (even though I don’t like to cut MY) the $$ is just a bonus lol.

    Staying in the Military for 20+ years to get a pension is not always a good idea. Yes you may walk away with some money but will it be worth the possible medical problems latter in life? I did some time, plus I work with quite a few retired military and to see some of these guys hardly being able to walk after putting 20 years tells me its not always easy as it is claimed to be.

    • @KevvThaw
      @KevvThaw  Před 5 lety +2

      Definitely. Working towards a pension... but at what cost? It's an individual decision, i couldn't say anyone would be wrong or right for making it without knowing the details.

    I think there may have been other options to play both sides. I’m in now and I would like to get this under my belt, here’s the thing, you can do all things you want in the reserves as well. So collecting your pension and other incentives will still be available. Everything is dependent on the person, i think he may have thought that he didn’t fully think out the options available to play both sides of the field...I’ll see you when I get back! Need a cut ASAP

    You should have waaay more subs..in my position I just wanted to learn to cut hair I can see the benefits to both but like you said you can come outta either one and not be good if you want to be the best barber continued education whether CZcams another barber taking classes etc is always gonna work..there are so many different reasons for choosing either one maybe you cant afford school so you shadow and learn like that if hes a master barber you would be taught at a high level one would assume .personally I would choose the apprenticeship it's just more practical to me ....great video brother

    I understand what Tariq Jackson meant the brother could have finished the military then have cut while in the military & after
    Getting those benefits he won't get once he starts having a family... He'll understand later as most younger men do

    • @KevvThaw
      @KevvThaw  Před 5 lety +2

      i didn't do too good a job of responding to that in the video. No "benefit" should control your decision. Control money don't make it control. There's a reason the military has a mandate of time connected to it, because they want a higher retention rate, not because it benefits you. You can easily forgo a pension and create your own plan. A "benefit" is defined by the beneficiary. You can't control me with your "benefits". It has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with knowledge of self, and having a plan. We gotta stop moving in fear.

    I'm going with apprenticeship because most people learned by doing or by a experienced barber. Back in the day when my father was a barber you didn't have to attend school. With college being so expensive and time consuming there should be apprenticeship programs, doesn't make sense to go into debt for a career.

    • @KevvThaw
      @KevvThaw  Před 5 lety +1

      Tommy Breeden agreed there definitely are many positives to apprenticeship. But I guess my whole thing is I can’t glorify either one. I’m focused on the mindset of the barber. Doesn’t matter which one you choose if your mindset is off.

      @@KevvThawlove too kevvin. As an older person entering the trade i see how an independent contractors like barber's that works for someone else can maximize income potential but offer no other benefits unless you purchase it on your own . So let's be real how many barbers are willing or able to do that.??? Unless you work for a franchise companies who may offer some benefits but then you are limited to let's say your income potential to $15.00 an hour. Apart from healthcare benefits a barber would also be concerned about being disabled or receiving injury that puts him or her out of business and so on. Believe kevvin we can talk about this issue for a while. Wish i could reach out to you and talk about it so you can make a video about it.
