Jim Dandy and BOA were a kick-ass southern rock band before it was even called southern rock. You could tell they were having a good time on stage.
He is so freaking HUMBLE!!! A great example for others to follow. Much respect for this man!!!
Jim Dandy, what can you say? I have never seen him in a video that he wasn't just plain people and humble. These guys just had fun and never meant any harm to anyone. Much respect.
Jim Dandy wrote the book on Rock and Roll frontman for the 70s and beyond. So many singers copped his ‘Schtick’, most notably DLR. I remember when “Van Halen I” came out I saw the photos of David Lee Roth and heard the lead vocals and thought, “he looks and sounds like Jim Dandy!” God bless him - seems like such a down to earth and real person, grateful for all he’s accomplished and has. ❤️

There are so few people in the music business with the integrity and decency of Jim Mangrum. He is the real deal. Saw BOA in 1978 and they were so incredibly good.

Bout 8- 10 yrs ago my production company was hired to do sound for Jim Dandy & Black Oak of all my yrs in the music bussiness this was one of my most plesurable moments I've ever had Jim , Rickie ,Johnie the whole band was one of the most down to earth situations I have ever worked with . Jim & the whole band treated us like we were close blood family members . I have nothing but complete respect for Jim & the boys of Black Oak . They are down to earth don't forget your roots country people just like you & I

I grew up about 20 miles from Black Oak and went to high school with Pat and Stanley--
David Lee Roth copied Jim Dandy's stage performance in the early days of Van Halen. I like this guy...humble and grateful..he deserves the rewards he gets because he remembers that the fans made him famous..very cool dude.

Jim Dandy might be more famous for influencing DLR than he is for BOA's music. You can't find one BOA video on CZcams that doesn't mention DLR. I don't if someone influenced Jim Dandy, but he had a cool look that was his own.
I have known Jim for at least 20 years and he is a great person always friendly and very humble. He always remembers me and talks about the time many years ago we got drunk at Platinum Plus in Memphis. Just a great Guy.
I've heard Jim say Roth stole his act, and was very humble and gracious, he had lots of respect for Roth
lol...we did sound for them in a club one night and it was a good night. Nobody had any problems all day and things went good and when they got in the bus to leave they flipped us off..lol. Fuck that ass hat.
Met them years ago when I was young and crazier than I am now. Lol. These guys are now my family as my little sister is married to Jim Dandy Mangrum Jr. A conversation with Dad is one you don't forget. Lol. His personality is as deep and as soulful as the music he plays. Love you my BOA family ♡♡♡
I seen them in a small bar in a small town in Ca. They played that bar like they played big halls ,great show . After the show when the bar closed their bus was out back so my friend knocked on the door ,they invited us in and smoked a joint with us . What a bunch of good friendly dudes we talked to them for a half hour when they mentioned they were stuck behind this bar because their starter was out so my friend drove an old school bus to the show and he ended up pull starting the bus so they could get out of Merced . That was the best show i've ever gone to and i've been to a lot of concerts in my life. . Someone will say I've met the Prez. of the U.S.A. I'll say so what "I've met Jim Dandy"
I've been in love with Jim Mangrum since day one, the first time I put eye's on him. I wanted to buy an old pick up truck, and paint the words "gravel roads" (my favorite BOA song) on the doors and go to Black Oak, Ark. to look him up. He's been my dream since I was 16, and he still is. What a gentleman.
Super stand up guy, would be a privilege to have a BBQ and a few beers with Jim!

Dear Jim, I write with an apology. You came to Aberystwyth, Wales, UK and both you and the band gave EVERYTHING to your performance and got NOTHING back from the audience that evening. I was part of that audience with my girlfriend right up front at the edge of the stage and felt embarrassed by how little reaction there was. I never forget gigs, for experiences last longer than things. I do remember trying to clap and cheer for ten people to make up for that deficit I just mentioned. The vibe you gave me has lasted 45 years. You did a GREAT JOB that day at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth! GREAT JOB transporting us all the way from Wales to Arkansas! Thank you.

Jim Dandy is a one of a kind performer and Black Oak Arkansas is a one of a kind band. I saw them many times in the 70's and was never disappointed..they always came to play!

living legend and we appreciate and love Jim Dandy in Arkansas. Rest of world may have forgot, but he is still in our hearts.
Saw BOA in '77 at the Long Beach (Calif) Convention Center. They opened for Blue Oyster Cult. BOC was really having a lackluster "off" night, while BOA was absolutely spot on in the groove.
So much so, that the audience was chanting "Black Oak, Black Oak!!" While BOC was still playing. To this day, I think BOA's performance that night was the best live show I've ever attended. 45 years ago and I still remember it like it was last week.
I got to meet JD and the band back in '72...
Awesome guys to hang with... Got to see them 9 times when they were at their peak and every show kick-ass...

This is the guy that major rock stars wanted to be and still a humble guy. Don't forget Mr. Tommy Aldridge was their drummer. Cool band.
Ok... So I am a very long time fan of Jim Dandy Mangrum and Black Oak Arkansas. I love the music, the act, the fire they brought...the whole thing. I would never say anything disparaging about JD. Accept this... that was the longest run-on spoken sentence I have ever heard in my life! The interviewer looked like he was trapped. Too damn funny. Listening to my ex father in law, a great guy but quite the talker also, used to cause my eyeballs to glaze over like this kid's are throughout most of JD's oration. I'm glad to see Jim Dandy is still driving the BOA bus. One of my favorite bands when I was in High School and beyond.

I saw at Wikipedia that he was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, but he must've moved to Arkansas early in life, because there's no trace of a northern accent in his voice. Another example is Eminem, who though he claims Detroit as home, was born in St. Joseph, Missouri.

What a show man seen in early 70$ the man could strut his stuff great band really drew your attention
I saw them play in like 1979 or 1980 in Mississippi and it was the only concert I have ever been to where the whole stadium was like one big party. I remember him walking from the midst of the crowd toward the stage with his staff in his hand and his stage performance and that of the whole band was so good. I was 16 or 17 and I loved him lol. And still do!
I saw them at the Beacon in the early 70's. The Line up was Montrose, with Sammy Hagar opening up, then Black Oak Arkansas, then Foghat. An absolutely smokin show. Each band was really on. For BOA Ruby Starr made it and she was looked sizzling hot as was the band. Jim Dandy is great up front. And kudos to the sound engineers at that show man it was loud but so clear. Great memories.

Saw BOA in Memphis 1973.. My first RnR concert.. and now all this time later.. He is still around and he is just "REAL"!!! has some stories to tell.. I met him at a local bar in Memphis last year and he was awesome!!! Friendly and very personable!!! Go Jim Dandy Go!!!!

I knew BOA when they were called 'The Nobody Else'. Butch Stone, their long time manager, was an old school mate. At the end of the day, Jim is a small town southern man with a gentle soul. He's seen both sides of the fence and has always managed to keep his sanity. He is a genuine first school rocker.
Me too, many years ago too...more than we,d all like to admit. Flying horse of louisiana still a favorite. Shamefully i was one of the weekend girls,had a great time. Jim was & is still a great guy. Now days people go to jail for what we did LOL.

I'm surprised Atlantic Records would roll the dice on BOA in 2013. As legendary as they are, if they put out a new record that goes gold in this day and age, it'll be a miracle. Not because the music is bad, but because kids today don't know jack squat about what good music is. They're too preoccupied with hacks like Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber to know what quality music is all about.

I'd heard of Black Oak long before i heard of southern rock.
Well ... I don't know too much about BOA ... I bet the record company is rolling the dice because the band continues to fill seats and they still have a large, niche following. Just a guess.
As a musician who grew up during the early years of BOA ... I can say that my fellow musicians never really listened to them. But ... on the occasion when their name came up ... it typically garnered a smile or a chuckle.

The first time I saw BOA was at the Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina in 1972. The first band was a band called Fleetwood Mac. I didn't get off on them at all. (little did I know) But when BOA hit the stage it got the party started. I had never heard of BOA before that concert and I am still a fan of Jim Dandy and the gang. Down home southern rock and roll.
I will always love Jim Dandy- I have had friends who were afraid to go to biker rallys where BOA were playing and I always said- don't worry about a thing- this guy is a southern gentleman and nobody would dare start any trouble.
He seems like a really good guy.

Lori (Tom Petty was another one who said he'd never charge more than 35 dollars so everyone could afford to attend. That's class that causes deep respect just like the respect I have for Black Oak Arkansas.)

I’m 66. When I was 16 I saw The Nobody Else which later became Black Oak. My Brother and I caught them at the National Guard Armory in Memphis, 1969. They were so cool cool, great and night t on any trip. They all signed our little black and white flyer their people had around town. They had been together since high school, 1963 where the stole the schools PA system. They Were Certainly the first Southern Rock Band. Long live these fine legendary gentlemen!
The last time I saw him I was in The Bandidos. They were the Little Rock Bandidos favorite band.

I WENT TO SEVERAL OF THEIR CONCERTS. TWO OF THEM STAND OUT. ONE WAS IN BARTON IN LITTLE ROCK AND BILL CLINTON SAID WHEN HE WAS PRESIDENT THAT HE NEVER INHALED. WELL IF HE DIDN'T HE WAS NOT BREATHING. THE OTHER ONE WAS AT THE FIRST ARLANSAS JAM IN THE MIDDLE OF PASTURE. THE BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER BEEN AT. IF YOU EVER GET A CHANCE GO SEE. YOU WILL NEVER REGRET OR FORGET. GO JIM DANDY!!!!!!!!
I've grown old with all the bands of my generation. Back then I sure liked the guys with long hair. oh and to the girl that said she sat on an orange crate and looked through the window pane I know exactly what you mean. I'm glad the worst of those days is over. But if I could go back in time I would prevent Bill Gates and the rest of the computer nerds from building anything so people would continue talking face to face.
BOA had just played a bar down the street from me,and I was out in front of the club smoking a joint with the guitar players, and Jim came over. He wasn't speaking, but had this huge smile on his face. He took a few hits and walked away.. the other guys said he is saving his voice... it was all kinda surreal...

One of the earliest concerts I attended in the 70s was BOA as a headliner with Styx and the Dixie Dreggs as openers. Glad to see Jim Dandy still out there.:)

Buzhard: I saw them in St Paul in '71, they were the intro band for Grank Funk. We made that long drive back to Fargo after the concert that night. 48 years later and I still remember that concert well. Oh, Gooooo Bison!!

In 1973 I was 14 I snuck into a concert Ed Barnhill Fieldhouse in Fayetteville Arkansas I've never been the same thanks Jim Dandy and thanks to your drummer dude knew I was going to be a guitar player

Never forget first time I saw BOA in the early seventies. Jim Dandy came running out on the stage playing the washboard looking crazier than a shit house rat. Great show and never slowed for the next hour and half or so. They were on a package show with Uriah Heep. Later same year saw them in Atlanta opening for Grand Funk Railroad. Man those were the days. Grand Funk was one or the best band during that period in time.
I meet and got to talk to Jim Dandy in the mid nineties and he talked about like he did in this interview!Got to shake hands with him and shoot the breeze with him after the show,I'll never forget that!!!!!!!!
People say DLR copied Jim Dandy's on stage act. It's too bad Roth can't copy Jim Dandy's off stage behavior - classy and humble.
