once you learn to play a 6 string guitar, a 12 string guitar is actually quite simple to learn. Your fingers are each just essentially pressing down 2 strings instead of 1.

I see a lot of Swifties who have never played a twelve string in the comments lol. I love that Taylor is a female guitar icon, I just wished that meant more of her fans picked up the guitar as well! A twelve string is not that hard to play: the strings are thinner (lighter) and they are strung in pairs. i.e. each pair of strings is strung very close together, so you'll have no trouble holding down two at a time; it'll be just as if you were playing a six string, just that every 'string' (which is really two strings very close together) feels flatter. It might even be easier to play a twelve string than a six string. Because the strings are lighter, you don't have to press down as hard.
Anyway, I hate that women in male-centric environments (like the guitar world) are constantly put in these positions that they have to 'prove' (to MEN!) that they can do things just as well as men can. I know I struggled with that for a long time when I took guitar lessons. I was more preoccupied with impressing the guitar guys than with getting out of the guitar what I wanted. We don't actually need men's validation for anything, lol. There are just as many women as there are men, so why prioritize their views? I play guitar for myself now, and I'm not impressing anybody. And I love it.

12 string guitar is very very similar to a 6 string guitar. Playing one feels like playing a normal 6 string, but each of the normal sized 6 strings has a smaller sort of complimentary string above it. It has this richer brighter sound to it. It isn't exactly practical for most music, or most songs, but if you can write something that uses it well, it can sound really amazing. Good for her for going for it.

I love Taylor and I think she is one of the greatest song writers of our time. But there is nothing all that challenging about a 12 string guitar. It is just 6 pairs of strings vs. 6 single strings. Everything is the same. Each finger is just holding down 2 closely situated strings playing the same note in a different octave for a fuller sound.

I don’t doubt her dedication but something tells me she’s embellishing the details of this story a little. Taylor was born into exorbitant wealth. Both of her parents were high ranking stock brokers/fund managers who realized Taylor had musical talent at a young age and did everything they could to facilitate her success. Somehow I doubt she had to “wait 6 months until Christmas” to get the guitar. You can almost see it on her face when she says “I picked out the one I wanted” and almost immediately realize how entitled that sounds so she adds in that detail to make her sound more humble.

Couple things....if your fingers are long enough to play a six string, they are long enough to play a twelve string.
You cannot play until your fingers bleed every day , I guess you can but it takes very little playing the next day after the first day !

If you play a 6, you can play a 12. regardless of age. I have played 12 string since i was 10. This is typical Taylor.. so dramatic. Gotta hand it to her, judging by all these people fooled in the comment section, she knows how to play the game.

I'm a guitar geek. If you have a great neck on your 12 string and a really good setup Tech, it's not a big deal playing a 12-string. But a bunch of those guitars that are not setup you need to be Arnold Schwarzenegger to actually play them LOL

12 string is literally the same as a 6 string. your finger automatically covers the extra string.

The comment below from @Aiden Marshall as the saying goes "took the words out of my mouth" for a non-player to find out that someone in this case Taylor Swift can play a 12 string guitar it must sound like "Wow 12 strings Wow" or thoughts to that effect, but as Mr. Marshall said its just a 6 string with each string doubled but the extra 6 strings are not the same thickness (gauge) they`re a lot thinner because the extra 6 are tuned 1 octave above the main 6 strings, except for the high E and the B strings they`re tuned to the same pitch, as I said, and I`m sure I can speak for Mr. Marshall we meant no offence whatsoever we were just helping you understand, playing a 12 string guitar is not that big of a deal, Having said all that, I`m looking forward to hearing "Red" it`ll be interesting to hear what she did in the re-recordings, she owns the Masters, she is one smart Lady

News flash... If you can play a 6 string you can play a 12 string. The only "hard" part is tuning it...other than that super easy to play

  • @ethelwulfmountbattenderoth2286

The hardest part of playing a 12 string guitar is tuning the damn thing. If you play a six you can play a 12.

12 string guitar isn't that different to 6 strings at all. 12 is still like 6 but doubled strings some are octave higher. If u can play 6 surely u can play the 12.

If someone can play a 6 string then they can play a 12 string providing they're strumming normal chords and Barr chords...
But if you're plucking and playing different notes then it's very hard indeed

I really like Taylor Swift but this is not a big deal. You play a 12 string same as a 6 string. On a 12 string, you have 6 pairs of strings, strung very close together. This enables the player to depress two strings with each finger on the left hand.
Twelve string guitars give you a “bigger” sound with the additional strings on the lower three (E, A and D) being an octave higher while the 3 higher strings (G, B and E) have an additional string that’s an exact duplicate in the same octave.
There’s no significant skill needed to play a twelve string as opposed to a 6 string. It just takes some getting used to

If you can play a 6 you can play a 12 people thinking there is some big difference are misinformed. Well there is one difference but its just that tuning a 12 takes twice as long as a 6...
