I think you are right about a root cellar. Around it was a garden and the four corner rock piles were anchors for a fence to keep the deer, etc. out. I suspect the CCC boys in the 1930s "decommissioned" the structure, rolled up the barb wire and like so many other homestead sites, hid the evidence of a federal homestead program that was a galactic failure. Can you imagine a young family from the city trying to raise money crops out there in 1900? Rocky soil, no water, too hot, too cold, no road, no market.

Great information. I like the garden around the cellar idea. I need to go back and really hike around.

I was hoping you were going to showcase that odd root celler thing you showed me out there. I've thought about it as well off and on since then. I'm at a complete loss as to what it is. The location is so remote it is mind boggling.
As for your evening wind down while out in the desert, you gotta do what you gotta do. When I did my 13 day trip out there this fall, I had downloaded a bunch of Netflick movies to my tablet. Each night I would hunker down in the back of my truck (with the Softopper canopy) and watch a movie (or two) until I was tired enough to sleep. Absolute perfection!

it is for shepherders many decades ago used to use them for shelters and they would fence in their sheep at night time on occasion if they had problems with coyotes the shelters were for the sheep herders to get out of the bad weather

Family grave site. 4 kids and husband/wife in the middle. Probably grave robbers got to it… (just a guess)
