"Strumming" the Piano? Thinking Like A Guitar Player

  • Other instruments are a great source of ideas on playing technique. In particular, guitar accompaniment strumming patterns can be translated to the piano with a bit of thought. In this piano lesson we will be "strumming" some chords on the piano, and I'll also show you how to come up with your own patterns. Have fun!

    As a guitar player. I can confirm, this is how I started playing piano. I transferred the individual notes to find chords, and played exactly like that.

      Keys is just PITCH...I'll play around you all day long, That includes modulating between the 5 parallel scales (35 modes/chords) and rapid multiple keys shifting.
      There's no key signature for the other 4 diatonic scales...God forbid i play the Full diminished (WH.HW) or whole tone scales...Or play all 12 notes.
      Which might take you decades to learn how to read 30 sec worth of music .
      You wont be able to site read effectively...Sometimes it happens too fast...I 'll purposely play those notes.Tabs created by piano player or PC generated are RETARDED,..Not unless you wanna fuck up your hand

      Great Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you tried - Rozardner Possess Violin Reality (do a google search)? It is a great one off product for understanding how to master the piano without the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my close friend Aubrey at very last got excellent results with it.

      Lol, I kind of do this though in certain songs on my baby grand; literally knocking the side bar to imitate fills, or playing certain notes and chords with extremely aggressive and rhythmic staccato. I know it seems odd, but really, playing instruments like other instruments can enhance a composition.

    As always --- wonderful ! But, an additional thought: to give it even more of a "strum" feel. Move one of the left-hand notes into the right hand, and then "roll" the right hand. Why ? Because strums are almost always not notes played in unison, but rather the strum quickly arpeggiates/brushes across the notes. And a big thanks !

    Fantastic! I had figured this out myself in getting Nathaniel Rateliff's SOB from guitar to piano. Then I realized someone else must have this notion of getting guitar to piano, and sure enough, this video nails it. I had figured out for myself: 1) Chord both hands, 2) Alternate hands a lot, 3) Vary that alteration, 4) Pedal like crazy, 5) Highly variable dynamics with frequent emphasis where the lyrics also get emphasis. It works great.

    Love this!
    I found a disparity between what my rhythm sounded like, playing at slower speed, and what the instructor's rhythm sounded like playing this at full speed. I realised I really had to up the tempo to get it close to the tempo he's playing it at, before what I was playing, was really starting to sound like what he was playing. So what is the tempo?
    When he plays it once through "up to tempo" - (the section just before he claps) - its approximately 225 bpm (eighth notes).
    Grab a metronome and practice at increasing tempos, until you get to that speed; once there, I found the rhythm, particularly of the right hand, starts to shine through :-)

      Thanks! The channel focuses a lot on "practical theory", which means how to make your piano playing "sound good", in the context of jazz/pop/fusion/etc - a lot of harmony, chord voicing, etc. Hope you find something helpful.

    Being a guitar player, there is definitely a similarity in how I play, especially in arpeggios, and inversions.

    This arrangement of power chords would fit perfectly into an 80s rock ballad anthem.

    I always thought piano was hard because I couldn't move my left hand but since it's in the same spot until you change chords, this makes it look so easy! Piano isn't as hard as I thought it was! Thanks for the tip! (I used to play piano for a few years, then stopped. Now I play guitar).

    I learned guitar and piano about the same time, and this is how I play. I never noticed I was playing different than normal.

      There's no "normal" really. This way of playing has become more popular I think in recent years.

    I found this video while searching for answers to the beginning of Elton John's "Sad Songs Say So Much." It sounds to me like a strumming sound, and if I remember correctly, the instrument he used was either an "electric piano" or an "electronic piano" I adore the sound at the beginning of that song, and I really want to know if it's the instrument he's playing, or his technique, or a combination of both. I could swear you're even using the same chords that he does, in the song.

      If you're referring specifically to the "strumming" discussed in this video, complex chords actually don't fit in that scheme very well. To me they sound too bulky.

      do you mean Amino acid (protein and stuff).

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  Před 7 lety +1

      Nope, I meant what's called amine groups, like the ones the appear in ammonia.

    • @visa-schengenwf424
      @visa-schengenwf424 Před 7 lety

      ohhh

    • @PhotonChief
      @PhotonChief Před 7 lety +5

      You both are correct, technically. An amino acid gets it's name from the amine group (NH2) being attached to a carboxylic acid (COOH) with a bit extra. Ammonia is simply NH3, which is just an amine group with a third hydrogen. Yay for science and music!
      (Note: This is my best understanding of the situation; I'm not the greatest at chemistry.)
