  • The Witch-king is the most loyal of Sauron's servants, and he is deadly in his own right. I had a great time with the video, and I thank you guys for recommending it! Thank you all for you support, enjoy! A big thank you to the online artists for their visual and audible pieces featured in this video! Also, thank you to Battle for Middle-Earth II: Rise of the Witch-King, and the Lord of the Rings Online for some of their pictures as well! I highly suggest playing those games, they are really good!

      @@Ediyo87 Wraith is more closer to ghost . Wight is more like Undead . I know the war in the north is not Canon but imo they made the Nazgul look like ghostly figures while the barrow wights were ghost consuming real bones or bodies of soldiers . They way you kill them in the game a green spirit is released and the bones just fly away . So they're almost like Zombies in a way . Except they don't want to eat you . I'm not sure if there is any real descriptions about what they looked like but I think it made more sense from that games point of view . I mean why aren't they called Ringwights then if Wraiths and Wights are mentioned in here .? That wouldn't sound as good .

      @@thehunter7422 I don't know about that game, but I know from the "lotro" version the wights are usually "resurrected" beings. Their bodies animated by foul spirits that had previously served Sauron. The original inhabitants most often having flown away after death. They don't have rings or anything to tie them down, and I'm sure calling them into those bodies is more convenient somehow.

It coveres many topics not seen in movie or trilogy. Smaller books exist but they are generally covered in silmirillion.

    I think the Witch King is a better villain than Sauron. True, he was merely a servant of Sauron. But he did possess great power and will in his own right, and was not merely a shabby imitation of his master, as Sauron had been for Morgoth. This was an undead being of terrifying power, and perhaps was one of the few Men that truly cheated death.

      He certainly had a free will, because for thousands of years after Sauron was destroyed, he carried on, establishing his own rule and kingdom, and destroying the kingdoms of the enemies of his master. It's probably more accurate to say that he was completely sold out to and enslaved by Sauron, not that he didn't have a mind or will of his own. But he was so enslaved that he couldn't break away from his master.

    • @lrhty1825
      @lrhty1825 Před 5 lety +20

      @Fan_Made_Videos Před 5 lety +14

      Did you read the Silmarillion or Book of Unfinished Tales? There's more to Sauron than just a shabby imitation, and he inflicted more damage to all Free Peoples in Middle-Earth at a scale tenfold to what anything the Witch King accomplished. Since the WK is a vassal for Sauron what he did himself is in essence an extension of Sauron's designs for what he wanted in Middle-Earth in the first place.

    I have never spared a single thought to whether the Witch King was from Westernesse. I guess that makes perfect sense. His death is so freakin' awesome, I swear I stopped breathing for like 10 seconds after reading Eowyns dialog, it was that epic. and the whole Dernhelm disguise is just amazing. I'll type it for any of your commenters who haven't read how much better it is in the books compared to the movie.
    "'Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!'
    Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. 'But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. *You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you if you touch him*.'"
    Makes me nearly overdose on awesome. Otherwise, the film is actually pretty faithful to the books in this scene. Even the actual fighting plays out the same. With her cutting off the beasts head in three strikes and the number of swings and dodges and shield breaking bit. It so bizarre that they did everything perfect, then lessen it by leaving out the best part.

    One of the most interesting things about this character is that he is to Sauron at Sauron is to Melkor. I've often thought it would be an interesting continuation of the Epic to have the witch-king resurface as an enemy of men in the fourth age. The same way that's Sauron himself came forth as an enemy of the free peoples after his master was defeated. But then again I don't know if he's been completely destroyed with the death or banishment of Sauron. That would be a question better left to Scholars such as yourself.

      This is correct, Saurons ring is the master ring and the other 19 rings of power draw from the one ring. Once it was destroyed in doom, then all other rings immediately lost their powers. The ringwraiths had their spirits contained within their 9 rings, when the one ring was destroyed, So were their spirits.

I love how they include all of those tiny details that were left out of the movies, like the hobbit skeletons inside Fornost (of the hobbit bowmen that went to the battle and never came home), how LOTRO-Aragorn wears the green stone (and later on, the Elendilmir), and any reference to Arnor in general. Excellent video!

In the game, Witch-king of Angmar is identified as a Black Numenorean, but I was wondering if this was also just for the game. Debate: Did Sauron take back the 9 rings of power after the men were wraiths? We know Sauron had 4 of the 7 dwarven rings, yet wouldn’t Sauron want even more power?
    I believe the ring wraiths kept the rings because if they took them off, what says that Sauron could still control them? In fellowship, Frodo is stabbed with a morgul blade which would turn him into a wraith, but not necessarily a RING wraith, if the 9 had that kind of weapon, then why aren’t there more ring wraiths? The blade was probably meant to place Frodo solely in the wraith world so those who saw in the wraith world, like the ring wraiths or Sauron, could see him with ease.

    • @Paulafan5
      @Paulafan5 Před 3 lety

      I don't think they'd wear the rings because if they were destroyed (like in the Fellowship of the Ring) then the Rings would be lost. The Rings were probably kept in Mordor and they'd return there to take form again. The Witch King probably would have come back too, but the One Ring was destroyed before he could take form again.

      That was just put in the movie for effect. A crappy addition in my opinion. In reality, Gandalf had just killed a BALROG! Compared to a Balrog, a Nazgul is a weakling! I imagine, if things had gone on undisturbed (by Rohan), Gandalf would have destroyed or at least temporarily incapacitated the Witch-King (like what happened at the Ford of Rivendell).
      And if he had killed the Witch-King, the prophecy would still have held true, too. Gandalf is not a man, he's a Maia wearing the form of a man.

Also, Hobbits are a branch of Men, therefore, by the prediction, Merry could not deliver the killing blow. Besides, spells can be remade, given time. Merry gave us the vicarious pleasure of torturing the torturer, I think we all enjoyed that, the ancient sword broke the spell of invulnerability, and gave Eowyn the time to take advantage of the Witch King's temporary vulnerability.
      And haven't we all had nightmares of evil creatures coming after us, wake up in a cold sweat. This nightmare had a happy ending, it goes deep.

    umm Merry killed the Witch King stabbing him with the Barrow Down blade which had spells of unmaking... says in the book that it broke the spells that "knit his unseen sinews to his will" Eowyn just applied the coup de grace but Merry did the real work

    • @paolos22
      @paolos22 Před 6 lety

      Zennofobic as discussed earlier, merry is a halfling, of the race of men. So he does no fit the the prophecy. Merrys blow breaks a spell, but it is eowyn that ends the witchking.
      “But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund’s daughter

    • @Zennofobic
      @Zennofobic Před 6 lety

      First of all, a halfling is not of the race of men. Eowyn as a Rohirrim is of the race of men so that negates the point you were trying to make about Merry. True, Eowyn is a female and no living "man" but she wouldn't have been able to do jack diddly to the Witch King if it had not been for the Barrow Blade that made the Nazgul vulnerable. So I still think that Merry did 90% of the work.

    • @paolos22
      @paolos22 Před 6 lety

      Hobbits are of the race of men actually. " Hobbits were strictly an offshoot of Men rather than a separate race. The origin of Hobbits is obscure; they first appeared in the records of other Men in the Third Age."
      It doesn't matter how much of a percentage of the work Merry did, he did NOT kill the Witchking.
      The final and crucial blow was by a woman, deal with it!
      Merry and the barrow blade were essential, but the prophecy was fulfilled by Eowyn, the fact that Tolkien has her say those lines directly to contradict the Witchking's use of the prophecy is not coincidence.

      Shade's Archives Gandalf was a Maia and Istari who was nearly equal in power to Sauron, but in a different way. He had strength of wisdom and advise, rather than force and power. If you want to know more, I just made a video on the Wizards! Thanks for watching, have a good one!

      But Istari were can not be compared with normal Maiar, they forgotten their origins and have a less power too (compared to elven magic, they are by mind fixed on body, Maiar were instead of it were not fixed to one form).

      The Wizards is LOTR are Istari like angels ton help guide the ppl's of Middle Earth & weren't fight others fights i.e. show their full power. The Balrog & Gandalf are of the same kind Maia much like fallen angels that followed Morgoth in the dissidence marring of the Song of Ea i.e. "God" that he sang w/the created ones teaching them the way.

      Pascal Gagnon it's something more I think it's something to do with the cloth on him and armour that made him be able to be killed

    • @colderplasma
      @colderplasma Před 6 lety +30

      Pascal Gagnon it's explained perfectly well that the blade that Merry stabbed him with was from the barrow downs. The Dunedain crafted blades that were specifically enchanted to fight the wraiths and break the curse that bound them to the world even after death. When the witch king was stabbed by one of those blades, he effectively became mortal and was able to be killed by a conventional weapon.

    • @AlphaZaku
      @AlphaZaku Před 6 lety +28

      Pascal Gagnon You have a misunderstanding of what the Nazgul are. They're not immaterial ghosts, they have physical bodies which are just invisible in the Seen world. This is how they can ride horses, wield real weapons, and wear real robes (note how Frodo sees them wearing grey robes and silver helms while he wears the ring, this being what they wore as they became permanently wraiths and are faded like they are).
      A lot of people have the misconception that the barrow-blade Merry strikes the Witch-king with was fatal to him, or it was somehow more important than Eowyn's blow. Tolkien wrote "No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will." The blade was particularly potent compared to normal weapons, but it didn't break any of the sorcery surrounding the Witch-king; we know this because Eowyn's sword still broke, as all blades do (including the barrow-blade itself) that pierce him. The "spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will" is a poetic way of saying his mental faculties. Merry's strike to the back of the knee paralysed the Witch-king, bringing him to his knees (which wouldn't have happened from a normal blade) which creates the momentary opening for Eowyn to drive her sword straight through his face! This is what kills him.
