🎬 In this FilmSpeak video essay we discuss the INSANE Perfection fo the Fallout TV Show and why Fallout is the best video game adaptation yet!

The Fallout TV Show Sets the Standard for Video Game Adaptations. In a landscape cluttered with hit-or-miss adaptations, the Fallout TV show stands tall as the epitome of what a video game adaptation should be. Join us as we delve into why Fallout not only captures the essence of its source material but also pioneers a new era in adapting interactive narratives to the small screen.
Unlike many adaptations that feel shackled to the constraints of past games, Fallout fearlessly forges its own path with fresh characters and narratives, all while maintaining the unmistakable authenticity of the game universe. Through skillful storytelling, it deftly immerses viewers in the post-apocalyptic world, allowing them to experience the thrill and wonder of the games firsthand.
What sets Fallout apart is its ability to leverage the open-world nature of the games, enabling the show to craft unique adventures within the expansive Fallout universe. This freedom to explore and innovate breathes new life into the franchise, ensuring that fans both old and new are treated to an unforgettable journey.
While other adaptations, like The Last of Us, undoubtedly excel in their own right, they are often bound by the linear storytelling of their source material. Fallout, on the other hand, embraces the boundless potential of its universe, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world where every corner holds a new adventure.
Join us as we celebrate Fallout as not just a TV show, but a blueprint for the future of video game adaptations in this Fallout analysis. Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Fallout review and explains why the Fallout tv show is perfect, how Fallout perfected the video game adaptation, when the showrunner is Christopher Nolan's brother, why Fallout is so great, Fallout gives me hope for video game adaptations, and why the Fallout series works. Enjoy this Fallout explained and Fallout ending explained video!

"Insane Perfection" ? Pfft. Cmon buddy, how many times have you watched this? ..comparing this to Arcane or TLOU and having it come out on top, is insane itself.. ..if this show is a masterpiece in your eyes, all i can say is, go watch more film and TV from the past.. this show was written on a writers strike by the most leftover DEI activists one could imagine.. Jon Nolan attaching his name to this means nothing to me, because hes not a gamer, and clearly most other people involved werent as well.. ..it plays like, remember this? Oh hey remember that? Look over here! Slo Mo and Old Timey music! Dumb characters making dumb decisions.. its like they based fallout off Fallout4 primarily, and even then, didnt understand the tone.. homie doesnt even know what his c*ck is for? ..i could rip this show to shreds, but Mauler already did it.. go watch that if you wanna see criticism from someone unafraid to say it..

As adapataion: absolute garbage with complete disrespect to the source material. As an Austin powers parody: watchable if you turn the brain off. The props are good, would be nice to have a theme park ride like that (would be more lore friendly)

It was an exceptional adaptation. It took all the right elements of both the setting and the reality of engagement that the setting was created for; a person looking in, interpreting situations for themselves, and making choices.
There's so many ways they could have taken the easy way out, but they didn't. They captured the grimness and black comedy, and the little bit of hope, that makes Fallout great.

It feels like they took effort to make the moral player, the immoral player, and the amoral player, and instead of the ghoul, i feel that Lucy's brother is that 3rd spoke.
We see him fantasizing about revenge. Finding the secret of the vaults...
He was the 4th spoke i suppose. His journey felt equally as important as the other 3, and he was also representative of how different players make choices.

The show came across as carrying a certain theme over and over again, it asked us, and its characters, what would we do to survive in the wasteland. Would we kill to get what we want or need?, would we embody a fanatic ideal to staunchly hold on to power?, would we hide in a vault like a coward?, or would we stand by what we believe in? What do we become in the wasteland with its own set of rules, what do we evolve into, and would we really like what that is? I really like this show.

@TheNinthGenerarion I feel you 100%. I'm up late, inebriated, but comfortable. Thus, your comment got me thinking, so I'm gonna respond, but it's mostly for my benefit and to add to your point. Sorry for this essay haha:
I'm not someone that personally pays much mind to if a piece of media is "progressive" unless it's a really good example or poor example of intergrating those elements. It doesn't bother me the way it does others, regardless unless done poorly or in a forced way. When done well, it's generally subtlety and thus doesn't warrent much discussion beyond simply acknowledging it. IMO, Fallout has always been a good example of progressive media. They let different kinds of folks with different kinds of perspectives just be different. They don't draw attention to things beyond their relevance in the story it's telling. Thus, to me, it's natural and believable. More akin to how humans really are. The world has a lot of folks. The fictional world of Fallout even moreso. So in short, people criticizing the show for that is so strange. Cause, to me, it was always like that. In a good way.

The scene that really felt straight from the games was the dilemma about the fusion core in Vault 4. Take the core and doom the vault, but make the quest easier by having the power armour again? Or leave the core and do the right thing but make things significantly harder for yourself. Maximus was the evil choice and Lucy the good. That was a perfect Fallout adaptation of a quest line that never existed in the games. It really showed that the creators understood Fallout.

Also loved this show. I Liked it a little more then Last of Us. Goggins kills it and is such an underrated actor. Been a fan of his work back from The Shield which is a show that appears to be forgotten.
Back to the show. I loved the balance of humor and seriousness. I liked the each story thread. Vault 33 and 31 mystery could have flopped easily but was well done. Lucy was a great character. Max was the weakest and wish he got a little more time, but he did grow on me. It was fun watching him love Vault 4. Speaking of vault 4. It was all a side quest but it was well done and enjoyed it. Some great humor and comparisons.
Excited to see how they handle a second season.

Nothing is spoonfed to you, and while I've noticed it's caused certain youtube reactors to get confused and misinterpret some characters/scenarios, it's a testament to the intelligence and faith of the screenwriters that they aren't interested in explaining or providing exposition for every little thing. They allow for ambiguity, our own interpretations of character dynamics and motivations, and for the audience to work things out themselves.

What did I think? Pretty good, a 6/10 for sure.
The fight scenes were the worst part. Lots of "good enough" cuts. The contrast between The Ghoul fighting one power armored dude who has plot armor and 3 power armor dudes who don't was a a bit too silly for me to enjoy. I am of the camp that if a character important to the story winds up in a situation where they should die according to the established rules of the universe then they either need to die or the author needs to write a different situation. Obvious examples of plot armor take away from the story for me.
I still consider Attack on Titan to be my favorite show of all time, but a certain short blonde haired character's plot armor was a bit difficult to accept at times.
On top of that, the fight choreography was a bit lazy in Fallout. I really hate the trope of a SUPER STRONG thing grabs the person they are fighting and instead of just breaking them with their strength they throw them... god I hate that. If someone in power armor grabs a normal person, or even a ghoul, they should just close their fist on them if they want to win the fight.
The introduction scene for The Ghoul was the worst scene he was in and it was way too corny and cliche for me. Also his theme music was not what I would have chosen and was usually mixed too loud into the rest of the audio in a scene. It felt like it should be a comedic theme song, but they played it seriously and tried to make it badass.
Lucy was amazing, no complaints there. The Ghoul was usually good, but I think the directors really hurt his performance a few times with bad takes. Maximus was annoying to me at first, but I came to realize that was just his character and by the end I thought he was a great fit.
I wouldn't recommend the show to anyone, but I enjoyed it for the most part.

  • @EccentricGentelman
    @EccentricGentelman Před 20 dny +2

IMHO this show is far from perfect.
    (Spoilers ahead)
The raiders getting in through vault 32 makes no sense. How could everyone in 32 be dead for 2 years and no one noticed? It only makes sense if Bud and his cronies like Hank and Betty knew but kept it quiet.
But if they knew, how could Moldaver and her raiders lie their way inside 33?
They retro-actively made it so that Vault-tec were solely behind the vault experiments. Now the Enclave have no reason to ever have existed. Which is a bad move as not only is the Enclave a major part of the Fallout timeline, it's already been shown to exist in the show.
They also made it Vault-tec who started the great war so they could wipe out everyone and create a new world with only one faction, their faction. This makes sense for Vault-tec who have a cause, albeit a horrific one, but not for the other businesses invited to take part.
Even if the plan works and they get rid of everyone else, giving them a monopoly on the world, it would be over a broken world. It would take generations of rebuilding before this cabal of corporations would command the same resources, power and standard of living they had before the war. Why would these self-serving people condemn themselves to a lifetime in a vault for a future they would never live to see?
Mr House is something of a fan favourite but, being in on Vault-tec's plans, his backstory makes little sense.
His sole goal is to resurrect human civilization and resettle it on new radiation-free planets and spent years before the war preparing to save Vegas from the bombs. He doesn't sound like someone who would deliberately cause that war, even if he thought it inevitable.
At the end Moldaver is framed like a misunderstood hero and we're expected to accept that. But she's been no less ruthless then the Ghoul, no less extreme then the Brotherhood.
But what I dislike more then anything else about the series, is how lop-sided it's been in the moral nature of groups on the surface. So far we've had Filly a town of lawless criminals, the fascist Enclave, the Brotherhood and Moldaver who are both willing to kill innocent people to get what they want.
The show keeps pushing the idea that morality always crumbles in the face of death.
But it's simply not like that in the games. There are plenty of people and factions who just want to live in peace, are honest, decent even noble. Like the Kings, Rivet City, Diamond City and the Followers of the Apocalypse. People who have chosen to hold onto morality and rise above their harsh environment. Those kinds of people are not yet represented in the show.
And for the record, I have always hated stories where we see a good person go bad.

The Enclave was a secret organization formed before the Great War, made up of America's most powerful corporate, military and political leaders.
They didn't cause the war but wanted to take advantage of it if it happened. They hated communism and thought a nuclear war would wipe-out communism for good.
They came up with all the vault experiments and had Vault-tec build or rig the vaults accordingly while the Enclave prepared a shelter of their own. They believed that the average Joes and Janes couldn't survive a nuclear war, nor should they. But the Enclave considered themselves to be America itself. As long as they survived, America survived.
The idea was that if a nuclear war happened they would retreat to their shelter while the rest of the country scurried off to the vaults. Later, with all the data gathered from the vault experiments, they could re-create America in their image, better, more efficient and controllable in a world free of communism.

    Perfect? Ridiculous.
It's a pretty darned good show, mainly due to great existing lore in the games, and a favorable comparison to nearly every previous game adaptation (and a sea of other identity politics-laden garbage these days).
Here are some of my criticisms (certainly not exhaustive):
    1) The actor playing Maximus is not nearly on the level of the other two leads. He plays every scene the exact same. Writers have him screwing every single thing up, then failing up every time. Ugh.
    2) Tacked on love story that is just weird. When she jumps at his face at the end, it's so unexpected, Re-watching they seemed to have a friendship, but no love interest. In the very final scene, it was SO flat and Maximum didn't return her affection at all, he seemed in friend mode, nothing more. Cuz he is very mediocre actor and the writers could do nothing with him.
    3) Weirdly tacked on sexually ambiguous character feels incredibly out of place in the apocalypse. They even have this huge, gruffy guy refer to them by their pronouns, and every single other character very conspicuously avoided referring to them. CUZ 220 YEARS INTO THE APOLOCALYPSE EVERYONE IS SUPER WOKE, RIGHT?
    4) Explanation of who dropped the bombs makes ZERO, and I mean zero, sense. Perhaps Vault-Tec is responsible, but why they'd do it and lose every bit of their wealth is completely beyond any possible reason. The writers seem to imply they dropped the bombs just to make sure they dropped, but don't explain why they would destroy their own amazing way of life (and their own vast wealth and power) in the first place, when they could have easily run their experiments in the modern world, hidden away!
They could have explained it just as foolish profiteering to sell vaults which just got out of hand when the Chinese went ahead and launched, but no. we had to have the utterly illogical wokie version, right?
Just awful writing at the end, saved only by existing lore they were forced to squeeze into. I hope next season sees some improvements, but judging by all over modern series that are praised, the woke will be emboldened in season 2.

Watch again the interrogation scene (be careful to not get triggered when they use the "t" pronoun) and see how he changes from shitting his pants to absolute and utter loyalty for the cult he's being indoctrinated into. Also the vault scene when hes stupid happy.
      2) By this point we saw how Lucy was atracted to Max as soon as they meet each other, he came like a knight in shining armor in junktown traveled with her for a good while. Was the first person that she met outside the vault that cared for her and her quest he let her go with the head, putting himself at risk, dunno kinda basic lovestory ingredients all pepper during the series.
      3) Yawn! you ppl lost this battle, just give up.
      4) By this point I realize that you just missed the mark with the show althogether, and tbh I feel silly writing this response, but hey sunk-cost fallacy. I don't think we'll ever know who drop the bombs or why (fallout 5 maybe?) it was simply a buisness asurance by vault tec to his economic allies that if necessary they will drop the bombs.
Then you say woke again = yawn.

3 is one of my all time favorite games. New Vegas is up there too.
My modem died right as I got to penultimate episode. So I started a save file from FO4. My avatar is a lot like Lucy, but blonde. I found myself thinking about where I left off on the show thinking something something baby Shaun, something something wind up in New Vegas

It's junk. Retcons major elements of ALL of the games, but worse it also fails internal cohesion in terms of plot and motivations. The show-runners relied on a scrambled timeline and shuffling viewpoints to avoid having back-to-back segments which undermined one another. The acting is fine (Goggins especially), the props are good, the sets are generally well-crafted, but this is a classic example of a show where the more you look at it the worse it gets.

A 7 isnt perfect, there is plenty wrong with the show, from terrible lines to pure retconing. I enjoy it even with its impurities, but gaslighting everyone is ignorant. If other movies and shows were less garbage nowadays this wouldn't seem so impeccable to some viewers. Imagine your'e in a desert, and you see a a little oasis, its ganna seem pretty good to you regardless of your small criticisms, but put that oasis next to a 100 of them. You're not ganna be shocked and 'awwed' by the oasis if there are 100 more just alike and close by. Since the market is flooded with AAA mediocre terrible content, when something somewhat good comes out its outshines the garbage pretty easily making it seem near perfect when in reality you found one of the few shows above average in a sea of doo doo

show's providing great atmosphere, but (geo)political aspect of it is pretty bubbly/weak, cause in the real world one american corporation is not the only one to make decisions. plot with nuking selves is oversimplified and a bit dull: to convince somebody in the need of shelters, nuclear propaganda would be way much more cost-efficient, some international escalation would also solve the task. communism is a thing, dangers of which you'd better be aware of (at least soviet type communism), so saying that everyone with different opinion is such is also misinformational simplification. making a huge reveal/tragedy of corpo employees being hibernated is strange, cause from an organizational side of things it's pretty smart; depicting this as an evil act is an unadult view on power and organizational work. great 6-7 episodes, finale scenario decisions are awful.

I agree. it would be strange if just one company was calling all the shots....that's why the show didn't do that. that meeting room had Vault-tec, big MT, Repcon, Robco, West Tek and whoever that shadowy figure represented. you and a lot of people are misunderstanding the scene, they didnt just outright say "lets send the nukes" Mr house specifically asked them what happens if nuclear war never happens. Vault tec didn't intend to end the world it was a plan B in case the nukes were never launched and given the various unfinished Vaults in the games and the fact Barb's daughter wasn't in a safe place when the bombs dropped makes me think Vault tec never got the chance to do that plan B. and your final point. the executives freezing themselves wasn't supposed to be seen as an evil act...raising two vaults with the only purpose of being genetic material for those executives is the evil part.
