    In this video, we’re going to talk about ketones and emotions.
    What is the relationship between ketones and your mood? Can being on keto help with depression, anxiety, anger, and irritability?
    Those who do keto and periodic prolonged fasting often experience a huge improvement in their mental health.
    When you’re in an argument with someone, there is an obvious cause of your anger (the person or topic).
    But what about times when you’re angry, anxious, irritable, or depressed without an obvious reason or trigger? How much of this is due to a lack of nutrition or fuel for your brain?
    There have been a handful of studies on these very questions. However, they are primarily observational studies and animal studies. Many also aren’t truly using a ketogenic diet or doing intermittent fasting. All in all, the research isn’t credible enough to draw a conclusion.
    Here’s what we do know… There’s something called brain insulin resistance, where the brain is not getting enough insulin because of decreased insulin sensitivity. This is directly related to depression and low moods.
    Additionally, diabetics are 3x more likely to have depression.
    We also know that metformin, which is made to help with insulin resistance, can help with the symptoms of depression. Nasal insulin sprays also help decrease the symptoms of depression.
    When you fix insulin resistance, you can improve your brain function and boost your mood.
    Fasting also increases the absorption of tryptophan, which is a precursor for the “happiness” hormone serotonin.
    When a person is misdiagnosed with a mental disease instead of a nutritional deficiency, this can be a huge problem. Not only will the problem not be resolved, but they are also likely being given medications with side effects.
    The HPA axis, which is the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal pathway, is also affected by keto. When you have higher levels of cortisol, the pathway becomes blocked, which can cause anxiety.
    Keto and fasting may also help regulate dopamine and serotonin, which are the pleasure and happiness hormones, respectively.
    Insulin resistance and diabetes can cause atrophy of the hippocampus, which has a direct effect on your mood.

      I think I cant trust "doctors" anymore unless I need a sick note for a simple cold. In my view "doctors" killed my dad and almost killed my mom because the "doctor" just subscribed some sh1t ("doctor" also was a long time family friend) even though she needed treatment on the level of ER which she got in the end but...
      I just remembered she (that "doctor") immediatly put me on medication when I said I felt depressed. This was years ago. My reaction to the first pill was...lets just say extremely negative.
      Btw. I confess that I stopped Keto for 2-3 weeks and now I am feeling all down depressed, anxious and powerless.

    In 7/2017 I was in a severe depression. for 45 years I had ptsd and lupus and I lost my boyfriend to cancer 7 months before this point. After pushing myself too hard in a high stress career my body literally knocked me off my feet and I could barely function. My GP and Shrink had me on meds for years. When I stumbled onto Dr. Berg's videos one night I knew I had to try keto/if the very next day. When the bad thoughts of depression come, and I’m trying to strengthen new thought patterns by recognizing the lies depression is telling me and finding what is true to think about instead, it’s much easier to do this if I haven’t been consuming sugar.

      What I have learned from reading all these comments and watching the videos are most children with ASD and ADHD live on high carb diets due to food aversion and sensory processing issues. There is definitely a link. I have 2 children with ASD and ADHD and their diet is a worry. They have sensory processing disorder and food is a real fear for them. They stick to safe foods which are bland beige and full of carbs, no goodness at all. And yes I have tried everything, the dietitian has, the therpists have. It's not a parenting issue its a real issue. And a real worry. Being around kids with asd other than my kids I found that they all live on the same sort of save foods. If I could change their diet I know their symptoms would ease , if only It was that easy.

These foods have helped me a great deal, because I was feel dizzy and a bit depressed with the concussion and now I’m not. So maybe do some research about foods that help the mind. Lilian, could you set a goal of a month instead of only 4 days. If you cut out carbs it can take about 2 weeks to adjust but you will adjust. Our bodies really do prefer healthy foods. If you eat three meals a day to start don’t have any snacks in between. Then if you go to two meals and put those eating times about 4 hours apart and make sure you have plenty of fats like meat, avocados, eat lots of green leafy vegetables 🥬, healthy oils like extra-virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil, these will help you to not feel hungry in between your meals. Honestly it’s done amazing things in so many lives including my own. Dr Berg does have a beginner video also. I hope you do well.

    I am roughly 8 days into keto diet. I am also a pescatarian vegetarian. I am not really a cheese person so this diet has been hard for me. I feel really depressed. Sad , head hurts, constantly thinking about things. Over analyzing things. I struggle with soda drinks so I bought zevia instead to help me . I mostly eat 4 eggs in the morning a rock star no sugar silver then wait till lunch and have fish and broccoli and some sharp cheddar. Dinner green beans fresh and garden salad plain made wild salmon

    I was always fit and skinny, could eat whatever/how much I want, this already started to change a bit a few years ago. (didnt have the easiest youth and not the happiest person, but grateful for life) Last December I fell from my bike and got a serious concussion, my whole life changed and I couldn't do or think the way I was used to. Started looking for every option helping my brain to heal (not easy when your head feels like a broken computer haha). And after 1 month of not exercising because of the headaches, and snacking to pass the time in this personal hell. I went from 55kg to 67kg and got even more depressed. Than I found Dr Berg! Struggled a bit on giving up things like (dried) fruit and some veggies, but after a while got used to it, and transitioned into OMAD and almost vegan healthy keto (still eat eggs every other day and occasional quality meat/cheese) I started feeling so much better, less headaches, more energy, happy, less down/grumpy when on period, lost all the weight I gained! No more bloated belly! better sleep, and so on. I still think its not that easy around family and friends who are all so used to eating carbs and sugar, but I have cheated a couple of times, and I always feel like crap afterwards, so, thank you Dr Berg! You have made my recovery and quality of life in general so much better!

    I have to be honest, my sleep is terrible while in Ketogenic diet. It gets so bad (I feel like I'm dreaming the whole night. Non stop anxious thoughts) that it affects the rest of my day. Even after a couple of months. I'm not overweight, i have no diabetes, I don't drink coffee, and I'm not stressed during the day. I take long walks have big salads, moderate amount of protein. I used tryptophan and other kinds of remedies with no success. But when I get at least 300g of carbs at the second part of the day, I sleep much better and my mood is much better. So ketogenic diet does not affect everyone the same way.

    • @richardmiddleton7770
      @richardmiddleton7770 Před 2 lety

      Your fats might not be high enough and perhaps you're not getting fully fat adapted because of the 300g carb 'refeeds'. Too much protein particularly from red meat close to bed time can disrupt your sleep aswell. Chamomile tea at night really helps me.

    • @kllokoq
      @kllokoq Před 2 lety +1

      @@richardmiddleton7770 Believe me I tried and experimented. I've been refeding lately with 300g of carbs, since I noticed it helps me. But I tried for a period of 3 months being on 20-30g of carbs a day. I didnt eat protein close to bed time, used a decent amount of fat 30-40g of butter for breakfast and 3 tablespoons of olive oil on a big salad, plus the fat from protein. Also coconut butter and milk occasionally. I had two meals a day, and the last meal was around 6pm. I tried chamomile, valerian root. and all kind of other natural remedies. My sleep was never good, but this was so bad that I had to stop. I'm really sorry this didnt actually work, since I really like the effect of not feeling sleepy after a meal.

    I experience anxiety, mild depression, sluggishness, abdominal aches along with other things I either lack or too high of. I’ve watched your videos about what will happen when postpone on eating bread and sugar for a certain number of days. I would love to try out these experiments and try fasting if I’m able to.... though here’s the dilemma... though there are all kinds of helpful tips I can do for my health: physically and emotionally, I am needing to gain the normal weight according to my age and size. I am not doing good with that. There’s all these videos on how to cure excessive weight. Then there are those who are struggling with not enough weight or appropriate amount they need and losing too fast when not even trying.
    So Dr. Berg, how can I get my body to manage the weight it needs while juggling additional health issues and postponing on foods that I’m able to eat since a lot of other foods give me stomach aches/extreme fatigue, etc.
    It’s like pros on the con side and con on the pros side.
