The D metro line is a planned metro line in Prague. It has been in the planning stage for over 50 years now, and yet, only marginal progress has been made. Join us in this short documentary about the Prague D metro line, and how numerous factors, like car brains, regime changes, financial crises, and the whole ODS party delayed its construction by over 50 years.

My goodness, this story has been much longer and more complicated than I expected! One would think that a city with such iconic metro system as Prague wouldn't experience such problems trying to add a new line - also crazy to learn that the car brains are holding such strong positions there... keeping my fingers crossed for Line D anyway. Can I ask you in which position do you record the voice ?
In my short experience in the university radio the speakers were recording always in a standing position to help to take breaths ad have a more diaphragmatic breath.
It has been helpful to me, maybe it can be useful.

My exact thoughts, especially when the same government financed a underground freeway system for 41 billion Czech crowns (like 1.8 billion USD)

The result of this policy is that in the 2011-2019 period China built 10,000 km of toll roads and 4,000 km of high-speed trains every year at a price 60% cheaper than the European average. and the cost per kilometer of building a metro line is the same as building a tram line per kilometer in Europe.

Their entire economic model was built on top-down infrastructure investment to grow GDP, even after the diminishing returns made such projects uneconomical. It is part of why they are now undergoing deflation and market correction as the bubble has reached it's maximum - since the population has already started to decline. It is why the high speed rail system is not and cannot be expected to ever produce a RoI, not even cover it's existing maintenance costs. Planning may be easy in authoritarian state capitalist countries, but that does not mean efficiency, especially when party apparatchiks need to justify their legitimacy with growth by any means necessary - which leads to worse short term thinking and schemes, and megalomaniacal prestige projects take precedence over feasibility. That is what happens when the pendulum swings the other direct to no checks and balances.
Car Brains - I love that wording. :) I highly apreciate your insights. I have been following Prague's tram and metro network for 15 years now. I always thought, that the D- and E- lines were set. Well, I always thought things are SLOW in Germany. Looks like it's not a german problem only. :)
Are you up for a video on planned extension of the tram network? I had the book on the aniversary of public transport in Prague. There were planes for extensive new trams in the north and in the south. I would love some insights on that.

In my city, Milan the construction of Metro meant that a lot of tramways tracks operating on the streets above were removed.
I wonder if it happened also in Prague, or if the existence of some level of service was considered sufficient to keep the line from being built.
Last thing, for foreigners like me, that do not know Czech or Czech history and personalities, the name of the stations is really interchangeable as I cannot recall any that you have mentioned, so I would suggest if you could mention along with the station name the destinations served (main square, museum, university etc.)-.
That additional information will help the viewer to understand why the project is important and why he should care.

Side by side with new metro line the city is building huge amount of new trams line and no politician spoke about removing old tramways
In Prague they have a pretty robust and efficient tramway network that's even more iconic than the subway itself in my opinion and like stated in the video new subway lines were built to where there were no tramways. I read that Prague was even expanding the network so i think they have no intention of removing surface lines in favour of subway. I wish i could say that about my city, Lisbon.
In Milan they probably just upgraded a tramway to a subway and removed the trams all the way, that makes sense when the lines almost totally overlay eachother.
Lisbon lost two iconic radial tramways in favour of a single subway line that winds its way between what used to be the old tramways, not really serving people the same way the tram did and we fight on for them to bring back at least one of them.

I appreciate that the current administration is just sticking to the infrastructure that was supposed to have completed for Expo 2015.
Back to the Metro system and tramways.
MM1 was constructed with a cut and cover method on Corso di Porta Venezia and corso Buenos Aires, the tramways were not rebuilt afterwards.
By the way the metro is so shallow that no plants can be planted on those alleys as there is not enough clearance for the roots.
With MM2 we lost the Milano-Gorgonzola tramway while the Milano- Vimercate became part of MM2.
With MM3 on Corso Lodi the trams were not destroyed with the building site but with the metro underneath them were considered profitable and removed few years after.
With MM5 there has been a "reorganisation" of the service with reduced frequencies.
Now with MM4 there are no tramways dismissal, but most likely we will lose the oldest train service, Milano Porta Genova as the station is listed to be dismissed (since 2008) as the land is listed to be "developed".
In the meanwhile the othrer interurban lines Milano- Desio, and Milano- Limbiate were left rotting without investment until the service was declared unsafe and replaced by busses.

This reminds me so much of Bucharest Metro M6, which has just started construction after too many delays. It's crazy how much time it takes to complete something in eastern european countries compared to western european countries like Germany (except for BER airport)
Yeah, every large construction project in central and eastern Europe has to go through like 5 stages of corruption and stealing before it gets done..

even so Prague is a small city(compare to other capitals)is doesn’t meaning it don’t have a traffic jams😅which is my idea of why we defenity need this Line D during these years😢
Also my point is this line should been done like around 2018 but apparently we cannot expect a city that costs a bunch of peoples time just for a few km’s tram to that kind of effective😂

I was wondering what was up with the D line, i thought they were going to close Pankrac's C line station in January for like a year to begin building the D line, but it's still open... so i guess that's delayed
As of now, I believe they plan to close Pankrác next year to build the transfer station

The Prague Public Transit Museum in Strašnice: www.dpp.cz/en/entertainment-and-experience/dpp-history/public-transport-museum
Some metro stations that are, in my opinion, works of art, like Staroměstská, Střížkov or Rajská Zahrada
On the topic of interesting stations, you can go to K Barrandovu tram stop for its architecturally interesting building
If you are visiting on the weekend, I'd suggest taking the historic tram: www.dpp.cz/en/entertainment-and-experience/dpp-history/historic-tram-lines-nos-42-and-43
If you want to see the preserved beautiful architecture of Prague, I'd suggest walking through the Old Town
If you want to see Prague’s communist era architecture, I'd suggest going to Háje metro station, which will dump you right in the middle of a massive communist era district called Jižní Město, which features stuff like the Czech Republic's tallest commieblock
Apart from public transport, there are of course, the "classic" tourist destinations, like Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Prague Castle etc.., although my tip for visiting those is to go early in the morning, because those places get quite crowded during the day
If you plan going on day trips, I'd suggest going to Karlštejn Castle by train (it takes like 25 minutes from Prague Main Train Station), or Český Krumlov, also by train (takes about 2.5 hours from Prague)

Osobně rád vidim takovýhle český kanály, co se nezaleknou anglický/mezinárodní tvorby, ale je pravda, že když jsou to videa většinou jen o Praze, tak to třeba tolik novejch diváků nepřinese. Jasně, Honest Guide jich má přes milion... ale stejně myslim, že kdybys našel nějaký témata, který jsou třeba pozorovatelný v Praze, ale dají se aplikovat na širší svět, tak by to mohlo pomoct růstu. Už jednou jsem tu navrhoval dělat video o VRT (což koukám jsi udělal), tak mě napadlo udělat něco o Evropský scéně. O potenciálu vlakový dopravy (rychlovlakový) po Evropě místo letadel, třeba můžeš mluvit o současný situaci, pak najít jednotlivý státy a jak to plánujou rozšiřovat, tim pádem jak se propojej a jaká "ideální" situace by mohla nastat za X let. Porovnat nějaký údaje o ekologičnosti vlaků oproti letadlům, atd... (např myslim, že do nějakejch 800km se vlak "vyplatí" víc... ale to jen lovim útržky) Už jednou jsem viděl podobný video na tohle téma a myslím, že něco v tvym podání, kde to třeba vezmeš ještě z jiných úhlů by mohlo bejt fajn.
Určitě se budu chtít víc soustředit na "mezinárodní" tvorbu, ale mi přišlo zajímavý téma metra D, protoze to plánovací peklo v kterém se nachází je opravdu... 💀
A já se radoval, že se už konečně začlo... Ale jen na dvou stanicích, zbytek je ve hvězdách. Pain.

Why not replace many trams with grade separated Elevated lines. Some of NYC’s current subway lines were former tram lines!!!!
I think the issue is that by constructing a new service you have a capital expense in infrastructure but you assume that you will be increasing the number of passengers that will pay to use the service.
When you re-build you have a capital expense but, as you will not serve new districts, will not have an increase of passengers (or not enough to justify the expense), you would have loaded the operating company with unnecessary debt and recurring debt servicing costs.
The main problem with construction are NIMBYs so I cant really imagine any elevated lines being approved anywhere near residential districts.
In the historical center it couldnt be approved because of historical building protections. The only places where this would make sense are streets with office buildings but those are usually already being served by trams or short bus routes to metro stations. Theoretically you could put some lines above highways but I cant really think of any places where that would make more sense than a dedicated line for buses.
the D line is literally useless and the plan is too futuristic, it would've already been running if they made some alterations and gave up the driverless trains.
I mean, stuff like driverless trains aren't some ultra-futuristic technology, they exist and are working right now

However, do you have the standard laws of property, namely land owned includes down below and up above?
Meaning that any proposed route should be "safeguarded" i.e. from as early as possible, the land should be kept as free as possible of major buildings.
