Rarely Used Coal Branch In West Virginia, Big Eagle Railroad! Coal Train, Confined Spaces Under CSX

- Obscure Railroad Runs Only As Needed! West Virginia Short Line Railroad Coal Hauler, The Big Eagle Railroad. Runs Up A Narrow Hollar Going Under CSX, Right Next To A Highway & Next To Chesapeake Fire Department Winifrede Station. We see the train being loaded at the coal load out and running loaded down to the CSX interchange. We also see the empty train returning to the load out.
Kanawha River Railroad operates the 6 mile coal spur in Winifrede, West Virginia that is known as the Big Eagle Railroad. They have operated it since 2019. We see the stick rail up close after the train passes. Due to the small 4 track coal loading area and the track being confined right next to the highway the trains only run in 28 car maximum lengths. Trains operate on 160.605 and there was no EOT when I was there.
I was lucky to get here during a two day period when a 112 car order of coal was being moved. I posted a couple of other videos of this railroad and this is left over video that was not used. The 2 locomotives on this line are leased EMD GP38-3 units built in the 70s. See my other videos for more information. This video also has a short clip of a steam train in Lebanon, Ohio. That is the Lebanon, Mason, Monroe Railroad and the clip is from their annual steam train. The 0-6-0 steam engine is trucked in from Indiana. Sometimes they use an 0-4-0 and I have videos of both in my Steam Trains play list.
Don't miss the Live Action Pets at the end and also the slide show pictures that come from the video.
Filmed Monday, July 26, 2021 in 4K. Thanks for watching!

OMG! I just found out that the fire station featured in this video was destroyed in a flood at the end of August 2023! There are several news articles and a news video telling about flooding that happened. The fire station foundation was partially washed away and the building left full of mud. It will have to be torn down and replaced. Meanwhile, the nearest fire station in Chesapeake will cover this area.
Dang!! .. Mills Creek came way out of it's banks to do all that .. no stopping mother nature. Thanks for sharing this with us.
@@kennethfuller8347 I couldn't believe it when I accidentally found it. I was looking for information on the memorial next to the railroad and stumbled across news accounts and video of the poor station getting flooded. It has to be torn down.
What sort of fire truck could back into that fire station? Maybe a 1984 Toyota?
Thank you for your dedication to preserving railroading history
Thanks for watching!
I like the gleaming blue livery of GMTX locomotives #2109 and #2115! 😍
Me too!
Love that view! Thanks for another great vid!
Thanks for watching!
This is how the 2 mile trains are built. 1 shoreline at a time. Great work here JT.
Exactly. This line has to make about 4 trips for a train over 100 cars because of their 28 car limit
Great catch J T...
Love all the greenery that West Virginia has.
Me too, it’s a beautiful state 😊
JT, I believe those were the most gorgeous locomotives I've ever seen! 😊😊😊❤❤❤
I think so too!
You find the coolest places to film trsins. That is why I like to watch.
The steam engine was cool, too. 😊😊❤❤
Yeah!
There's just something fascinating about this line. While it has modern Motive Power and Freight cars the trackage certainly is laid-back and running by the side of the road or along alleyways is rare. One also has to appreciate squeezing in the two Bridges going above it while another bridge is parallel to it. With our cold weather today keep the home fires burning and the lights lit with that West Virginia coal
Thank you for that from an old retired Steam Operating Engineer who ran 12,000 tons of that WV coal through his coal-fired electrical generating station daily. Cheapest and best way to keep the lights on.
Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
@@oldad6207Thanks for watching and commenting 🎉
@@oldad6207all three major Utilities in Wisconsin have had to put their conversion or retirement plans at Power stations on hold until 2025. Sections of the grid need updating and there hasn't been a new Wind Farm since 2010. Our reward was a 15% rate increase.for natural gas since several large plants were converted from coal. Then add in the closure of a 30-year-old plant that was in great operating condition and now that area is developing quickly and the last nuclear plant is shuttered. All those unrealistic goals and we sure aren't equipped to handle a big wave of electric cars. Take care!
I love the color combination of those two locos. The setting there looks real nostalgic. Another great video.
Wow! Excellent catch, @JawTooth, Brian, thank you.
Thanks for watching 😊
Awesome shot with the coal truck and train under the two bridges at different levels! 🤘🏻
Thanks!
Wow what a tight space between vehicles and train!
Love the through the ages pics
Love Trains
Hey JawTooth and Mrs JawTooth
Enjoyed the blast from the past
thanks! I have a couple more
Get the right people elected. That line will stay in business

😊 Good Job Jaw Tooth 👏 😍 👌 +1 !!!! You and Gambit are the best 👌 👍 +1 !!!!!!
Wow, thanks!
Interesting set up
The tracks close to the road
What a beautiful area to film trains. I love the sound of the creek running past the fire station. As a kid I spent untold hours playing in the creek not too far from my house. Thanks for the memories!! 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it
@@JawToothhay jawtooth what type of iPhone do you have
I love the color of those engines.
Me too. They are awesome. Google Street view shows them sitting by the road at the coal load out near Winifrede, West Virginia
Frampton Comes Alive!!! Awesome album!!
That was my brothers album but I loved it. That was a good one. Then we got a Black Sabbath album. I remember hearing that one played all the time. It influenced me to pick up guitar. Those were some good days. We also played Toys In The Attic over and over. lol
The GATX locomotives are so cool! I love GATX!
i really enjoyed seeing that video. Love the country side in the "hollers" of West Virginia.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video JT that was definitely a tight squeeze under the bridge. Those engines were definitely beautiful blue color. Thank you for sharing such great videos. Safe travels
Glad you enjoyed it
Great to see this and the tracks for the coal hauler train in West Virginia
and this is a very beautiful area in the state with the mountains in the
background along with the streamline locomotive and of course the Train Dogs making a great appearance in the house and yard playing around Thank You Jaw Tooth.🇺🇲🇺🇲👋🤠👋🇺🇲🇺🇲

Cool chasing trains to putting out flames you’ve done a lot of things
This is my favorite video!
Thanks 😊
I really like it when you show the size and date of the rail. Thank you Lars.
My pleasure!
Thanks for braving the rain to catch the fabulous coal train, JT! It was a spectacular video today. You certainly improved my week after seeing my oncologist yesterday! You always do an awesome job and are one of my favorite videographers. I so appreciate you! Try to stay warm during this brutal cold snap. 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much!
Nice work, Jawtooth.
Beautiful area and I always enjoy seeing this line. Thanks for bringing us the rails JT and for keeping the history of these lines intact. Much appreciated!! Until next time!!
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m a volunteer junior firefighter in lower merion pa. I love it
Sweet! It’s a lot of fun and you never know what might happen. I started when I was 14.
Good luck with your future I was a volunteer for 10 years
@@JawTooth I started in October at 16. Me and my friend work at the same company
@@RDC2003 Awesome! You will get great experience so that when you become a senior firefighter you will get some perks. I remember when I was your age I would sleep in my clothes and have the radio turned up full blast for our alert. lol
@@JawTooth our area had 2 structure fire calls in 2 hours about a day ago
This coal train video is cool. I love the short line trains. Thanks for sharing JT. ❤
Thanks for watching!
Love the dedication to your craft.
Thanks!
I love these older areas. And in between wooded mountains. Very cool area. Thanks for sharing JT.
Glad you like them!
This is a GREAT video.
Those GPs look to be in super great shape for their ages.
I think so too! You can actually see them on Google Maps street view at the coal load out
Saw this one twice. Love it. So cool. And...love your beautiful pets. Thanks.❤😊
Thanks so much 😊
great video ❤❤❤❤
Thanks!
Enjoyed the video of the Big Eagle Railroad. I took pictures of the operation back in the latter part of the 1960s when it was the Winifrede Railroad. At the time they hauled coal from the mine to be unloaded into barges on the Kanawha River. You can Google Two Short Lines of the Kanawha Valley for more details.
Cool coal hauling video with a great steam bonus. It's -4°F up here in Rhinelander while I'm watching this and all the greenery has me longing for Spring. Excellent as always, thanks JT!
Thank you very much! Stay warm, that is mega cold
my dad was also on a volunteer fire department
It is a great activity. Firemen stick together and make a team. I always wanted to get back into the volunteer fire service but I live too far from the station. All firemen have stories to tell. Its fun to swap stories.
Such a neat operation!
Very interesting RR line, glad to see there still is some coal still coming out of the Mountain State. Thanks JT.
Thanks for watching!
The landscape in WV is amazing. Well done sir.
Many thanks!
An oldie but goodie great video thanks Brian
Glad you enjoyed it
Our dog barks at anything. She's a Shih tzu cross schnauzer named Lilo.
Hey jaw tooth cool train . Awesome power units. GP38s or 40s love older engines. Hope coal line stays active. Have a great railroad day. 🚂🙋♀️
Thank you very much! They are GP38-3 units
It's nice to see a warm weather video. It's -5 this morning in SW Missouri. I also want to say I appreciate your dedication for filming in the rain!
Wow, thank you!
Freezing weather down here in New Orleans they actually shut down the cause way bridge due to the ice😮
Great video boy that is some pretty country.
You got that right!
I'm from Indonesia, I always watch you, sir❤
Thanks for watching 😊
love the surprised Easter egg.. cute little saddle tank steam loco

Best one yet thankyou
Glad you think so!
Liked the video interesting place but awesome thumbs up
Thank you very much!
Awesome video very beautiful country thank you Jaw Tooth from Jerry
Glad you enjoyed it
The great videos just keep coming! Thanks, Jaw Tooth.
Those are a couple good looking GMTX locos..and what a beautiful part of the country that is! Wow, that road is close to the rails, but I suppose the locals are so used to it, they don't even notice it. And it looks like a tight squeeze getting a fire truck quickly out of the station house..guess you deal with the space you've got! Fantastic video JT!
🚂🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃💯👍🇺🇸
Thank you very much!
As a fellow dog owner, I believe my little boy (a shichon named Marley) is the cutest dog in the world. Recently, he had a bout with gastroenteritis, but now he’s eating more of his food than he’s ever eaten and has loads of energy.
Really scenic in WVA, like the GATX EMDs,paint schemes ,fire station and old church, I remember seeing this location and coal branch!🛤🚂
Beautiful area and cool location Jawtooth! Love the historic pictures! Looks great to see a good warm day too!👍

Thank you for this additional never seen video of the Big Eagle Railroad moving loaded and empty coal gondolas, Jaw Tooth! I remember watching your previous video of this railroad from a few years ago. It was great to see this railroad in action again.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello my friend, another fantastic video, so beautiful! Greetings from Brasil 🇧🇷

I thought the guy on the side by side at 2:30 was gonna try to cause you trouble for videoing cause it looked like he started videoing you lol
I hope he didn't think I was filming him. I stopped filming because of that. I know I looked out of place lol

Great Video JT!👍👍👍 We've seen them switch out near CSX but we've never seen them go up in there. We'll have to make a trip back up in there and see what we can see! Keep Up the Great Work!
Cool, thanks for watching
Awesome blue engines !!!! I don’t see how a fire engine can turn to get out of that building- looks tight and tight for train too next to street and tunnel! ❤ ur videos !!!
Thank you very much!
Hey,that’s a really cool caboose with the steam locomotive 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Love the locations where you film at great job as always
thanks I appreciate that!
The bridge clearances look like something from a 1980s Atlas track planning book.
Awesome 😎
Thanks 🤗
I enjoyed that video👍👍
Thanks 👍
Almost 25 million short tons of coal is shipped to India. Japan, Brazil, Netherlands and China also get exported coal from the USA. Exported Coal is probably the only thing keeping some of those mines going
Loved the fire station and the stream behind it. Thanks JT!
Glad you enjoyed it! One note though. I learned that the fire station was destroyed last year in a flood
Great vid.
Thanks!
Ain't no rust on that line!!!
What an awesome video, Brian. You mentioned that the year was 2023 at the beginning. Well, Happy New Year 2024. Take care of yourself. 😊
Happy new year!
@JawTooth You forgot to wish me a happy birthday last week. My birthday was on the 9th of January.
@@michaelmcginn1706 Sorry, I thought I was caught up with my shout outs. I can still give a late happy birthday. Not sure which video to put it in. I have a medical issue that is slowing me down right now
@JawTooth Please take care of yourself first. I had my health problems, too. I had heart surgery almost 3 years ago, and last fall, with several stents put into my heart.
@@michaelmcginn1706 Wow, I hope you are feeling well. That is a lot. Take care of yourself also. When you get older like us you realise how precious life is. I had surgery last week on Wednesday . I was under for about 12 hours. I tried to film trains today but got sick and had to go home. I'll be posting old stuff for a week or so that I never posted. I'm 62, almost 63. Are you about my age?
The cold weather hasn’t just impacted Ohio and the northeast United States. It’s also impacted the rest of the country, with Winter 2023-24 so far bringing 19 fatalities, with many of them resulting from car wrecks. If you’re ever in Pennsylvania again, I suggest swinging by Front Street Station, grabbing a bite to eat, and heading outside to catch the trains rolling by.
