  • "Design research" means different things to different people.
We illuminate the three faces of design research: research for, into, and through design.
We explain what you must know, in order to understand and conduct design research for both academic and product design purposes.

How come this haven't blown up yet. This is without a doubt one of the most insightful design video I've watched. Thank you so much for sharing!

This video is AMAZING! I have been Googling different phrases for so long, trying to understand what you've just explained so brilliantly in this video. Really excellent. I now have a roadmap for where to start in regards to researching FOR design.

This is my second video of yours about three types of research in design. I'm doing a master's degree in graphic design. I was not given enough knowledge to understand the final purpose of the study. I needed to understand that creating a book layout makes some sense. Now I understand that the process of researching and collecting information, analyzing the material, is the research itself.

It's cases like this (cases where one of the most substantive, illuminating, novel, and high quality videos I've come across on YT regarding I topic I frequently search has a trivial view count and proved quite difficult to find while countless videos, each a regurgitation of the others, with only a superficial conception of design enjoy view counts in the hundreds of thousands and appear readily for design related YT queries) that leave me beyond baffled as to what the YT algorithm is doing; it almost seems like it works to _prevent_ me from seeing the things that I'd actually appreciate most -bizarre.

When you turn your attention to been very formal about research, you turn your attention away from design...research is to strategy while design is to execution in a way. good research for design is efficient and one way to go about that is to visualize your research away from words. @Design Disciplin

Damn! This video is so underrated! I've fallen into this rabbit hole of designer's block because of deep academic /theoretical research where I always loose my creative spark & vision. I've always wanted to research through design with a vision/mission I already have for my career path as that has worked well for me. And this video has narrated my struggles impeccably! But I want to know how to set myself on the path of becoming a design researcher with a degree? What kind of degree do I study to attain position of a Design Researcher. I know that, Design research is diverse and every designer specialises & researches on different design industries & categories.
Do u provide career consultation? Or can I drop an email to gain guidance? To know whether the concept/idea I want to research through design is possible?

Your video is very insightful, especially for something that's not really talked about. I am at a crossroad, where I'm wondering if I want to pursue industrial design or industrial design research, but I don't know which to do. Any advise please?

@@TheDudeway unsure if this discussion applies to art school 100%, but in our visual design practice we always ask: "Who are we speaking to?" We seek to learn the visual languages that the user/viewer understands. We look for brands, icons, symbols, places, and other images they would know. We immerse in their visual world via moodboarding. Combining the visual world of our audience with our taste, experience, tools, assets, etc. usually creates a very workable visual concept.
That said, the discussion in this video relates more to academic and commercial design practices, particularly in product design, UX, etc. There may be other more efficient ideas elsewhere, that are particular to the space of artistic imagemaking.

@@designdisciplin Yeah, I get it. I am trying to apply to communication design university. Which is highly interested in conceptional skills rather than artistic skills. So the thing is how to work conceptional and less intuitive. Can you plz help. 🙏 Can we make a discussion out of this ? What would be your first step after chosing a subject which you have to present to an unknown audience ?

I love your videos, but why don't you just take a breather every once in a while.. your videos seems like those advertising/ pubblicity videos where the protagonist just keeps talking, and the the videos are made by removing all gaps.
I don't know, is it something to beat the algorithm or is this your style. It's really tyring to listen to your monotonous speach.
But your content is very valuable. So thanks for making this effort! Regards!

Thank you for this feedback. Certainly taking into account!
There's a story to why we edit this way. I come from an academic background, where efficient, high-signal communication is rare. When I write and edit for Design Disciplin, I try to capture sophisticated discussions in the most efficient way possible. The editing style is the result of a desire to take as little time as possible from the viewer. However, we still have much to learn about editing. Will improve over time!
