  • RACHMANINOFF (1873-1943)
Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30
    I. Allegro ma non tanto 0:00
    II. Intermezzo - Adagio 16:39
III. Finale - Alla breve 27:41
    ALICIA DE LARROCHA, piano
    LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
    ANDRÉ PREVIN, conductor
Live from Carnegie Hall, New York.
    03-February-1972.
Poor sound quality because it is recorded from the audience
Alicia de Larrocha first played the Rachmaninoff Concerto No.3 on 10-November-1954 with Alberto Bolet and Barcelona Philharmonic Orchestra, when she was 31 years old, at the same concert, she also played the Mozart Concerto No.23(K.488).

One of the Great Rach 3's! Alicia marries classical clarity, simplicity & honesty with an extra ingredient of fiery excitement & passion just when it's desired & needed. Fabulous pianism and the orchestra&Previn match it. Thank you for a wonderful experience to hear this.

Indeed i fully agree lisilisin (think i know who you are!) One of the best i heard too. Just like the 2nd Rach. the Liszt Sonata, and so many other works. I never heard her playing this concerto in the Netherlands. Maybe i just missed it.

It seems that Madame de Larrocha never played Rach 3 in Netherlands, but she did Rach 2 there.

OK, thanks for this info. Never heard her with Rach.2 here, but there are so many concerthalls, so i probably missed it.

Anybody who typecasts Alicia as being mostly good in Spanish music has obviously never heard this or her other non-Spanish composers works. The sound quality is poor, the playing by both orchestra and pianist is outstanding.
At the end, I noted the usual mistakes. Here are the proper forms:
    1) Bravo for the conductor (solo male)
    2) Brava for the pianist (solo female)
    3) Bravi for the orchestra (Mixed men and women. Can also be used for a group of men only)
    4) Brave for a group of women, no men.
