Testing your gear before you hit the road can save you a lot of frustration. Had we done a mock tire change before leaving for our first six-month trip (now known as Season 1), we would have figured out we needed a four-way wrench before we got stranded on the side of the road.
As you've heard on KYD before, "We never make the same mistake twice. We make it five or six times, just to make sure we got it!" Last year, we added the Firman generator to the back of our truck. Check! After several days of dry camping, this was the first time we used it-only to find out that our surge protector was not allowing power due to an open ground fault. We also learned that we needed a 3-prong 30 amp adapter cord. (We'll save that lesson for a future video.) The moral of the story - test your gear before you go and if you have a fancy surge protector and plan on using a portable generator, you might want to make this doohickey! If you aren't into technical talk, don't worry-this video isn't all about generators. That was just the halftime show while dry camping at Recteq HQ in Evans, GA. on the generator there is a ground post if you drive a stake in the ground run a wire from the ground post on the generator to the stake the generator will be grounded also pour some water around the stake
DO NOT do this when using a generator for an RV or other off-grid situation. It is dangerous.
The point of a grounding conductor (meaning the wire labeled "ground") is to offer an alternative path for the electricity back to the source in the event of a short, or if the neutral gets severed.
Example: if the hot wire's sheathing gets worn through and the wire touches the metal of your water heater, you want that metal to be connected as directly as possible to the source of power so that A) the power now coursing through the water heater metal and any other metal connected to it travels through that grounding wire instead of through some alternate path, like through you when you touch it, and B) circuit breakers and other devices that sense ground faults can detect current traveling through the grounding conductor and turn off the power.
If instead of bonding the ground and neutral at the source, you put a grounding stake into the earth, now the only alternate path the electricity can take if something goes wrong is through the earth, from your RV to that grounding stake. But how will it get from your RV, which is on Rubber tires and plastic levelling blocks, into the ground? MAYBE it will travel along your water hose, or some dangling chain or something. But it might also, if you present a convenient shortcut by standing on the ground and touching a piece of metal that has been energized, go through you instead.
And to make matters worse, if there isn't a strong connection from the RV to the earth to provide that path, circuit breakers won't trip, surge protectors won't shut off, and the water heater and anything connected to it will stay "hot" indefinitely, until someone unlucky stands in the right place and touches the right thing to complete the circuit.
I know that grounding is confusing and somebody a long time ago messed up by calling it "grounding" in the first place, but please please please do not use a grounding stake with your generator if you're off-grid, and even if you don't have an integrated surge protector or similar device, ALWAYS make sure the ground and neutral are bonded at or inside the generator when off-grid.
Short version: when off-grid, grounding conductors (and all metal parts of your rig and appliances) should be directly connected to the source of power (generator, inverter, etc.) by a grounding conductor, which is bonded to the neutral inside or right next to that power source.
I've owned a Recteq prior to their current spelling. They had to change their name from Rectec to Recteq. I also competed at the American Royal Invitational and the Open, having won awards in the Invitational on a couple of occasions, long before Rec Tec existed. What a great company and product! Listening to you talk about learning the BBQ process was very enjoyable for me. I'm glad you had a great experience.
Marc just want to make sure everyone knows that when you make the generator “doo-hickey” to fix the open neutral issue, upon opening up the male plug (5-15P) all you have to do is place a wire between the silver screw (Neutral) and the green screw (ground) There was a mention on the show about the hot screw (gold) and that DOES NOT get touched at all. Just tighten it but no wire gets attached to it. Hope this helps.
That was my concern as well. They noted the gold post. Wire goes between silver post and green post. No wire to the gold post!

An Open (or floating) Neutral could make the GFCI ineffective, so you wouldn’t want a bypass as it is a safety feature. All separately derived systems (generators, inverters, etc) shall have a neutral ground bond per NEC. The Victron MultiPlus does the Neutral Ground Bond automagically when inverting.

@@seleblanc1986 "Automagically" has been a term around various engineering circles for many years, for circumstances pretty much exactly like this one. It's one of my favorites too. Basically, when something "automatically" happens but in a super useful way that makes your life easier, usually with a hint of unexpectedness or even ignorance to it happening at all. We use it in software all the time for things that should "just work" that users shouldn't need to worry about.

As a failed engineer, who took up flying commercially instead, I heard "Automagically" once and it stuck. You can always spot a propeller-head when they use that term!
While what you are saying is probably true, I think the issue was with Marc's Surge Protector. The generator flowing to the surge protector was causing the error in the surge protector so no power could flow from the generator to the surge protector to to the inverter.
I saw Sugar Booger on the Ford's infotainment display and laughed!

Very cool video on BBQ the one guy on the end of the video was from South Georgia and I was stationed at Ft Gordon in Augusta Georgia and met a family at a church I went to and they were out standing. They took me in as a serviceman and let me stay with them on Sunday's and made sure I was back on post Monday morning. Friendly hospitable just down home folks. It was great. Good Southern cooking!! Oh brother! I so feel for you Brad. Blew the engine on my 68 Firebird on the way home from purchase, and went through years of the emotional rollercoaster. Ended up rrebuilding basically everything bumper to bumper on that car. It eventually was a beauty and ran great, but as you know it is endless highs and lows owning a classic car! Looking forward to the next coffee one talk garage talk!

@@michelewalters9421 Competition brisket generally is rubbed with salt and pepper. Equal amounts by weight, sea salt/kosher salt and butcher's grind black pepper. Backyard/Harry Homeowner brisket can be whatever you want. I do the S&P and add in cumin, garlic, onion powder, finely ground Mexican oregano and I stay away from sweet on a brisket, its supposed to be beef to the max, not candied.

I believe it was the episode that Trish was attempting to cook flatbread on the Blackstone, that she commented on it not getting hot enough or even enough heating for flatbread or steaks. We use the Blackstone for most veggies & griddle/grill items & now take along the Ninja Foodie 6 air fryer & have never been disappointed cooking meats or items that need high temps. Granted it takes up room but on extended trips its great. Enjoy!

We have the same generator and same open ground issue with our watchdog surge protector. Thank you for the great info.
I have a Champion 4500 inverter generator and watchdog surge protector, same open ground issue. so, either take chances with just plugging into genny and no surge protection, or pony up $7 for a grounding rod and some wire. I only go about 2-3 feet down so I can pull it back out. or we can do the trick in this video and "fake out" the surge protector. Great video. love BBQ, smoking meats, and learning RV tricks of the trade.

Put a zip tie under your plug on the bottom of the male end it helps to prop up the plug and reduces the strain on it because the weight of the cord is always pulling down on the plug It's an old trick us truckers use works every time

as for floating or open neutral I havent had any issues with that, but, I do know that my 2010 Tiffin Phaeton will not connect to a 20 amp service if the shore power has a GFI breaker or outlet. Instantly pops the breaker on the shore power.. the onboard power gismo doesnt play nice with those devices.
I bought the portable RecTeq 340 it is my first smoker and love it. I have not only cooked meat but bread, cheesy potatoes, bake French toast, frozen pizzas, and lasagna. All have ben great, it folds up a bit and is still bulky but worth it.
Not sure if anyone else commented but I wanted to share that we’ve used Jerry Cans for years BUT be careful. The inside of the can may get debris, which you can introduce to your generator or other devices. We created a screen out of fine gauge hardware cloth to go over the end of our spout to catch any potential debris that may be introduced through the can.

the generator issue is very common, I have a Precision industries HW-50 surge protector, does the same thing, so I built a "bootleg" adapter until i almost broke it off, so I pulled the panel off the generator (Predator 3500) and just bootlegged the 15 amp plug. The term Bootleg is the industry term for connecting the ground and neutral, technically a dangerous situation in a house, with knob and tube wiring, but in this application it is a great solution.
I had a hardwired Progressive EMS in my last RV, it would do the same thing - it wouldn't allow power in from a portable generator. I used the little Progressive remote panel, which had a bypass switch on it. It solved the problem, but it was an ugly surface mounted display panel.
Years ago I worked for a major inverter manufacturer, learning about "neutral to ground bonding". I still eat/sleep/breathe inverters. I have a Victron system in my current RV.

Progressive Industries makes built in surge protectors that you can get the bypass switch for such as the HW30C or EMSPT30C (30 Amp) or EMSLCHW50 (50 Amp). Best of all they have a lifetime warranty.
Marc, a Mopeka LPG wireless tank monitor will help keep you from running out of propane. The only downside, if memory serves me correctly, is that a 30 gallon tank will show full until the level drops below 20 pounds. We monitor both propane tanks because I don't like running out of propane, and the love of my life does not like taking a cold shower. Happy wife, happy life!

Always amazes me how often you hit the nail on the head without even knowing it. Just now heading out for the first trip ever with our GD tt for a long weekend of dry camping. It's new to us and we are bringing the generator to top off batteries each day and watched this video with the "dongle". We had hardwired the Southwire 50 amp surgeguard in and wasn't aware of this hiccup. Hooray! No time to make our own, so Amazon gets the nod. Todd at NRVTA has just posted a video on this too. You guys are on it!
Loving the Harvest Host membership. If you ever are traveling South of St. Louis there is a beautiful HH in Farmington, Mo. called Twin Oaks winery. They can hold up to 10, 40+ ft. RVs. (Fresh H2O fill and electricity.) They host events on the weekends. Had a great night there on a Friday night. BBQ yum! 😋 Safe Travels!
So I just found your channel a few weeks back. Love it by the way but I almost lost it when I saw “ sugar booger” on your contact for Trish as we have used that nickname in our family for years!!!!
I was surprised to see Mr. Lonnie Smith. I just purchased my Bubba Grill from him back in January. He's a very nice and helpful man.
I've smoked a lot of meats. My favorite so far is a corned beef brisket. OMG. So good! I smoke until internal temp is about 150, then wrap it until internal temp is 200-210. I usually do two at a time. One for dinner, served hot. The second goes in the fridge then it gets sliced for lunchmeat... Most of the time I use no rub. It doesn't need it. If you really want something, just pepper.
How fun! Omg that food made my mouth water!
I also have one of those plugs in my toolbox. My generator is used to power the house during outages so I have my generator jumped to floating neutral which is what the house power wants and I plug the jumper into my generator on one of my 15 amp outlets. This also switches my 30 amp outlet for the RV.
For some mysterious reason I’m feeling the urge to eat BBQ, smoked ribs, potato salad and corn bread lol.

We had the same issue with the trailer brakes. Ours turned out to be the ground connection to the trailer frame. Follow the wire on the negative terminal of your battery until it attaches to a screw on the frame. That screw gets a little corrosion on it and causes the brake connection problem you mentioned. I spent a lot of time fiddling with the 7 pin connection till someone suggested looking at the ground on the trailer. Problem solved!!

Interesting discussion on your problems charging. I guess I’m really out of date with surge protectors, grounds, etc. I mainly boondock and depend on a 2000 watt gen to keep the batteries charged. Never had a problem in 20 years. Perhaps it due to my simple old trailer.
No issue if the surge protector isn't built-in. I mentioned this because more and more new RVs do have built-in protection.
@@KeepYourDaydream Our 1989 Fleetwood Flair class A has no surge protection as we use it exclusively off grid. Generator works fine with it for just that reason on a three battery bank system with solar assist.

Am just wondering why did you go with a generator? Having watched you guys for such a long time I know you have extremely high end solar and battery bank system. Are you finding your system isn't able to keep up? I have been saving up for a more extensive solar system to help with boondocking and would love to know more about the limits you have found.
