I feel like Adobe would make things a lot easier if they just combined photoshop and Lightroom into one application. It’s always been annoying to have to decide whether to do something in Lightroom versus photoshop and to have to switch between the two in order to do what I was trying to achieve.

Just to point out how useful the facial hair tool is. This weekend went to the Museum of Ice Cream with my wife. Every room was super pink. I have a naturally red bead with some grays peeking out. Needless to say. My beard had a lot of bright pink highlights. With these new tools I was able to get it back to its natural color without the need for PS. IT WAS AMAZING!

Yes, this is a great improvement on primitive denoising previously in lightroom. However it’s extremely slow and still needs sharpening after application. Topaz Ai personally make a much better job. It’s early days and I am sure that they will speed up and improve the results.

Wow 25k ISO is truly insane! But are we talking A7iv @ 25k, or something older / smaller sensor? Either way I haven't had a chance to play with either Topaz Photo AI or Affinity Photo Noise Reduction... for me I think the LR version here is enough for my workflow (as it is very rare I actually have high ISO situations to deal with... most of the time I'm able to prevent that by lowering my shutter or adding light in the scene!) so for my once in a blue moon high ISO images, having just ONE program and not having to make the workflow more complicated is probably better. Good to see Adobe actually doing something significant to Lightroom after all these months of minor tweaks for our subscription money. That said, the noise reduction is dramatically worse than the current market leading tools (DXO DeepPrime XD or Topaz products). I would rank DXO first with Topaz behind it for noise reduction, while Topaz is of course king at adding detail to low-resolution or blurry shots.
Don't get me wrong, it's nice that Lightroom NR has gone from godawful to somewhat usable, but once you see what the best tools can do, it's just not good enough given all the downsides of being forced to make a copy of an image, etc.

I'm pretty sure the curve adjustment within masks was introduced a couple of updates ago. I've been using it for a couple of months. The denoise is interesting and looks like a big improvement over the old algorithm. However Topaz denoise is pure magic when it comes to denoise. It's not one method for all files, with different denoise methods for different scenarios. And the subtle sharpening it does if you get it right is amazing. However the one dealbreaker for me is that LR will make a new dng file after applying denoise. What's with that?! I do not want to double the number of raw files on my system! If Topaz can do such a wonderful job as a plugin then why can't Adobe? It's Topaz for me until Adobe figures this out properly. And one last thing, apparently the denoise in LR works ONLY on raw files. Are you kidding me Adobe? Topaz will work beautifully on my wife's jpgs and will also fix noise in old TIF files from years ago. So it's unlikely I'm going to use this half-hearted attempt at doing something third party apps have been doing better for years.

    • @brightboxstudio

I think the technical explanation is that AI Denoise only works (for now) on mosaiced raw images, which means, the raw data has not yet been demosaiced (interpreted) into RGB channels. The current AI Enhance features (Denoise, Raw Details, Super Resolution) work best when they can analyze the original data and alter that fundamental first demosaic step. The results are demosaiced into RGB, and are saved as a new linear (demosaiced) DNG file.
But here’s the problem: A panorama or HDR merge in Lightroom/Camera Raw also produces a linear DNG file. You want to use AI Denoise on a merged panorama DNG, but it is already demosaiced, so AI Denoise can’t get to the mosaiced original raw data that it wants to analyze. It’s already been interpreted.
That is why Adobe recommends applying AI Denoise to images before running them through a panorama/HDR merge.
It is possible that Adobe might find a way to simplify this in the future. The Adobe engineering article “Denoise Demystified” says they are looking into how to simplify the process, like removing the need to generate a new file.
