- Check out the installation of our Old Man Emu torsion bars in our 100 series land cruiser. Our overland build is really coming along. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be probably because we didn't have much corrosion to deal with. Next up will be the front shocks and upper control arms and then a full review of the lift kit.

I just finished the lift on my lx470 today and It looks absolutely massive. Didn’t know how to remove the torsion bars and thankfully I found this video and it helped a ton.

Nice video. These things have always mystified me, makes it a little clearer.
One thing, those ratcheting vehicle stands are death traps. They all get recalled in Australia then replaced with a new model. Few years later the process repeats. I'd never get under a car held up with them. I personally know someone that had a set fail and have a car fall on them. Very lucky to be alive.

5:55 what ecatly the difference in between the old and new one? I just got an LX470, ahc deleted and replaced with regular shocks, nothing else has done. Front is way lower than rear, trying to level it up

I'm in the process of installing my IM lift right now. The directions are very sparse. I had no idea about which the the bars go to preload, I ended up sitting on the bump stops the first time.
@@Digital_Dairy strange, my Iron Man torsion bars came marked on both ends, with a several spline offset.

Quick q: if you’re just reindexing the stock bars, would you need to remove them completely or was there enough “play” in the adjustment bracket housing to remove the rear bracket and clock it over?
I don't think you can do it without removing the front bracket 🤔 I haven't been down there in a while but once the front bracket is off it's pretty easy to remove them. So I think you could adjust them without completely tacking them off the truck but by the point you have it were you need it, it will probably be just as easy or easier to do it on the ground. I hope that makes sense.

Hey I just installed the OME kit but did not do the diff drop bracket. Would that help my height up front if I did instal the diff drop bracket?
Nope the diff drop is not going to increase you height. your height is totally dependent on how much you crank the t-bars. but make sure you have enough droop! Sufficient Droop is essential for safe handling Droop is going to be limited by a number of things including shock length, UCAs, etc. The diff drop is going to keep your front axle shafts close to stock geometry. This will keep your CV boots and/or joints from failing prematurely. This can be an expensive repair so it's decent insurance. I hope that helps, let me know if you have anymore questions! Thanks
Should the adjustment bolts be at a similar depth to each other? My driver side one is in at a greater depth than the passenger side.
I think generally the answer is yes. A number of things could impact how deep each bolt is cranked but probably wouldn't make much of a difference. I would suspect the indexing of one of the bars was a little off. As long as the truck is sitting right/level and the bolt isn't bottomed out you should be ok. You might need to re-index down the road once the bars settle and have some age on them. Otherwise you could pull them back off and re-index and try a second time. I am assuming these are new t-bars if they already have some age on them one may just be more shot than the other.
Great video. Got one possible stupid question please. Why are torsion bars replaced? Do they lose strength? I don’t know.
thanks! not a stupid question at all. yes they fatigue over time just like a spring and sag. you can crank them up to regain height but lose performance. aftermarket bars have a higher spring rate too so perform better under heavier loads and rougher use.
nice vid. i need to remove the front sway bar bracelets on my 01'. the bolts that run up are rusted and rounded. if i remove the tortion bar do i need to remove the front bracket off the lca or can i slide the tortion bar out without removal of the bracket?
I don't think you will have a problem getting them out with the sway bar brackets in place but you do neet o remove the front bracket that the torsion bar slides into. Does that makes sense? Good luck!

I don't think I saw this answered yet. Did you have to do more than 5 splines or was the adjustment screw enough on its own?
Nope the screw was plenty after the standard offset. It is somewhat dependent on the weight of your vehicle but I still have plenty of adjustment left.

The Part Number of the torsion bar?
Hey, thanks for the install video, I'm just about to do mine- Tough Dog torsion bars. Question- how do you know how far to crank the adjusting bolt in the first time after installing the new bars? I didn't see you counting the turns when you took the old ones out.
That's a great question. The adjustment bolt goes through the the bracke it screws into and out the other side. I turned the bolt until there was a decent amount (1/2" or so) on the other side of the bracket for the first check. The truck was sitting pretty low. I had to turn them quite a few turns after that. I kept recording how many full turns to how much height I got, rinse and repeat. It took me a good while to get the driver side close to the final height. Once I got to the passenger side I cranked it way further initially. I tried to get the amount of bolt on the far side of the bracket close to where I ended on the driver side and it was real close initially, so it went much quicker. Let me know if that makes sense.
@@BradyAdventures I know that you're supposed to have a minimum of 50mm of droop to allow the suspension to articulate properly- I'll count how many turns it takes to get the bolt loose and see where that gets me when I re install it. Thanks!
@@islandj39 absolutely that sounds like a pretty decent way to get started. Hopefully you'll have more droop than that too. I ended up having somewhere between 60 and 70 millimeters if I remember correctly

Do you need to replace stock torsion bars when installing a lift kit
You don't have to but it is a good idea. The aftermarket torsion bars have a higher spring rate and and will preform better when lifted. I needed to do mine too since they are 13 years old and shot. Thanks!
@@BradyAdventures What were the symptoms of the shot torsion bars?
If your truck is sitting low or uneven that can be a sign of them starting losing some spring. You can always crank them to get the height bacl and even things out but the spring won't perform the same. If they are totally shot then I would expect the truck to feel kind of bouncy. Mine were sagging but I don't think they were shot. if you're lifting it's still a good idea to go with aftermarket bars since they have a higher spring rate to handle more weight and the lift.
Hey great video. What were your final numbers from wheel center to fender front and rear?
I think they are a bit different then a couple years back but today I am sitting at 21" up front and 21.5" in the rear.

Hi Chuck, What were your final measurements. Also, any tips on how to know which direction to go with your 5 spline offset?
My rear sits at 21" from the center of hub to the fender and the front I have adjusted to 20.5". I did have the front at 20" for a while but like the close to level look. My truck is generally loaded out so I don't have to worry about the back getting too low. As for the splines, this can be confusing in so many ways. If you get it backwards you will know because the truck will go super low the first time you lower the jack. If you are sitting the same direction as if you were driving and everything was laid out as you were installing it you would mark rear of the torsion bar 5 splines clockwise on the driver side and counter clock wise on the passenger side and line your front mark and the rear mark up with the respective master spline mark on the brackets. Hi man I have 100 series lc and I just bought new shock absorbers and springs to give my car a lift . Do I have to change the torsion bars too or I can still use the original torsion bars that came in the car ? Thank you
You can use the original torsion bars but it won't ride as well. Aftermarket bars have a different spring rate and are designed for lift and more weight. You'll be fine but I would swap out the bars at some point.

@@justusabigaba3954 We don't have diesel 100 series in the USA so I would say that these torsion bars are fine for you land cruiser. I am not sure if the diesel cruisers have heavier torsion bars to handle a possibly heavier diesel engine? I would do some searching on the ih8mud.com 100 series forum to see if you can find more information there. I am sure there's someone who has discussed this at some point. Thanks!
