- Ritchie Valens music career barely lasted 8 months. And yet, in that short time frame, he laid the foundation for Latino rock, added to the growing rockabilly genre, and inspired countless artists of all genres. Watch the 5-minute bio on this amazing young man here!
Thank you so much for this video. I knew that Richie was young that fateful day, but I did not realize just how young he was.
You are the only channel I am subscribed to that can bring me to tears in such a short period of time.
You can connect people together and to the past and to their shared emotions; and that is true talent and empathy on your behalf. Thank you for that!
Thank you for that thoughtful comment; you made my day.

He did all that in 8 months imagine what he would’ve made in a lifetime
For some reason his story builds a knot in my throat idk why... 💔

Or 10 years for that matter…
My dad was in "The Silhouettes" with Ritchie. He played the piano. My dad passed a little over 2 years now. He's jamming out with Ritchie now. 😌

I’m so sorry to hear about your fathers passing glad your keeping his memory alive telling his story !!
Hearing Bob scream “RITCHIE!!!!” at the end of the movie will always make me cry. Just thinking about it chokes me up...
I just got goosebumps. But his mother throwing the clothes and saying, "not my Ritchie" hurt too. I felt that.
Ritchie’s sister showed up on the set of La Bamba during the fatal flight scene & supposedly lost it and screamed why brother had to die in front of Lou Diamond Phillips, who thankfully held her. Hopefully that was the closure the Valenzuela family needed.

So sad. Deciding to get on the plane and it crashes 5 minutes later. I'm sure he would have written many more great songs. Donna is my favorite.
Forgot to mention that the video was great.
Thank you for commenting. And I agree that it is a very sad story.
yes indeed he had a lot of talent, my favourite song is Donna too, although I´m Spanish and La Bamba is in Español, I prefer Donna

It was a coin toss
I watched “La Bamba” 13 times at the drive in back when it came out.
So did I!!
When I was a kid I went to go see this with my mom .Everybody in the theatre was crying at the end

Is it me or Ritchie looks older than 17 years
Nah. It's not just you. I've always thought the same
Motor Performance Helpers back in the days high schoolers looked like grown ass adults nowadays they look like they should be in middle school
BobbleHead so true lol
also baseball players looked older back in the day compared to today
Young adults did look older back in the day, I believe by the way they dressed and behaved, most young adults now dress and behave like clowns.
Look at any high school pictures from the 70s, 60s, 50s, they usually have them on your local High school and those kids look like adults. Nothing compared to kids from the 90s till today who look like jr high kids.

3 hits in an 8 month career. Countless musicians have devoted their entire lives/careers to be fortunate enough to accomplish even 1 hit. To have to quit High School to be in the circles of people such as Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, not to mention American Bandstand. All of this success at just 17, man it blows my mind of what more could have been. The potential and possibilities! "La Bamba" is one of my favorite movies, Ritchie's life is such a beautiful one.
La Bamba Is also one of My favorite movies too.
Despite all the hate he had cause he was Mexican he still pulled through and became a rockstar!!!
He didn't consider himself Mexican though. But he was of Mexican descent.
@@oyaml1211 how do you know he "didn't consider himself mexican" when he was inspired by Mexican music and influenced him to make La Bamba. Please explain. Don't just say he didn't consider himself Mexican. Even then, he was Mexican whether he CONSIDERED it or not.

I was at a slumber party and we had the radio on and they interrupted a record to announce the plane crash. I remember it as the middle of the night, but in reading about it in recent years some accounts have stated no one knew what happened until the farmer who owned the field spotted the wreckage after the sun came up. It was a long time ago. My gracious he'd be 75, had he lived.
Howdy LodiTX passed thru your town before. My mother lived in Daingerfield when she was a child. Gramps worked at power plant around there then.
Ricky: I know Daingerfield. My kin are scattered all over East Texas, Paris, Mineola, Texarkana,Gum Springs, etc. I was born in Longview, but was a Navy brat so only spent time at home when my Daddy was at sea. Unfortunately I've never seen Lodi, TX. I took my pseudonym from the CCR song "Stuck in Lodi Again" after I found out there was a Lodi in Texas, too. Love that song. Wish I could see Lodi, TX. Maybe one day I will.
I remember that part of TX is very "worldly" as in, I was going to OKC but taking the Indian Nation Turnpike and went thru (not in this order mind you...) Atlanta, Paris, Little Chicago, Detroit, Clarksville, Daingerfield, Lodi. Lots of big name places but small towns :)

Ritchie was taken away way to soon, he was right up there with some of the big names, it is incredible how much he achieved at such a young age and what he has done for the latino community
I saw this movie at the theater when I was 8yrs old. I am 41 now and still listen to his music. My appreciation for this young man has grown with my age. He was an absolute trailblazer. God bless you wherever you are.
The stars belong to the sky, 😭
Ritchie was music genius. At age 17 it's hard to believe he was so young.
The instrumental of american pie played in the background while you talk about the crash is heartbreaking
So sad.
I remember that day, hearing the news while attending a dance. I was fourteen, and knew something had happened that would change all of our lives. I didn't now what, or how, but here I am so many years later realizing that something did indeed die for us all that day.
When I hear this music makes me want to experience how life would have been back then
Heartbreaking even when you know how its going to end.
Ritchie, besides being a highly talented singer and musician, was a well liked and respected guy. Well done Ritchie, you made your mark my man ! God be with you.
Rest in Peace Mr. Richard Steven Valenzuela your music and memories will live on forever!!
Oh my... This one brought a tear to my eyes. I knew about Ritchie because of the movie La Bamba. And boy, that made a difference in my life.
The King of Latin Rock/pop. He paved the way for every Latin artist who have come after him. Everyone, from Los Lobos, Father Santana, to Ricky Martin. Even La Reigna, Selena. My generation sadly got to feel that loss when Aaliyah passed in a plane crash in 2001, and then with Jenny Rivera a few years later, also in a plane crash. Ritchie is still a legend for us.
Ritchie’s always been my favorite. Great video. As guitar player myself. Ritchies tabs and chords were very unlike anything at the time. He had the advantage of being Mexican and learning scales and rhythms from his culture. Spanish scales that were only past down through heritage. Plus the blues and soul Rhythms he had. Ritchie is very very underrated. There’s very little we know about him. But what I can tell you from everything I’ve seen and read about Ritchie is that the day the plane burned to the ground, that was the day we lost so much creativity, individualism, and passion for music which Ritchie carried so noticeably.
Thank you for that lovely narration. I was born 10 months after their deaths, so the information that I've gleaned has been thru documentaries and movies. What a tragedy. The Big Bopper's son and I are the same age, give or take abt 8 months. He never met his dad, until they exhumed the body. I am glad they left a legacy of music for us late baby boomers to hear, along with other generations. Ritchie had the face of an angel.
THANKS FOR THIS!!!! He is so under appreciated and most young adults now days have no idea the impact he made. ❤️
His life story is so wild, everything he accomplished, and later dying by his own fear.
Thank you for watching! Hopefully some of those who don’t know about him will stumble upon this video and take an interest in his music.
Too many years way back for a generation only listen to rap & text iPhone 24/7/365......
@@Alpha11 I knew about him when I read he was on the same plane as Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper.
I loved the song "Ooh My Head" before, I haven't listened to it in a few years until watching La Bamba. I was wrongly under the impression that Ritchie was at least in his early 20s. 17, I can't believe how young and talented that was. And now it's 60+ years ago. Incredible. All the musicians that have been taken away too soon are always the ones that would've pioneered the greatest in music, instead of just influencing through their successors.
Buddy Holly was in the plane too died real young I think he was 22 he also inspired the Beatles Paul McCartney loved his song Peggy Sue and the name the Beatles was kinda a tribute to the crickets that's buddy Holly's band
I believe he was seventeen
I cried on this video. What else can be said about a really young rock star! Thank you for bringing this biography on Ritchi Valenz.
So insane to see someone still be interested in him, and to make a video about him! Crazy, and good video to people who don't know about him.
We hope to reach people who don’t know him so they can learn and that those who do know him can enjoy a walk down memory lane.
Not insane at all. He was a true talent, and he transcends his era, reaching people across cultures in his time and ours. A true musical legend.
Gone too soon, i fell in love to his music the first time i heard them. Very talented artist
Ritchie and especially Buddy Holly remain two of the biggest "what if" stories in Rock and Roll.
Thank you very much ! What a tragedy to die at such a young age!! But he achieved so many things within so short a period of his life where many people had to wait a long time !
Just so sad. I wonder how many more hits he would of had if he didn't get on the plane.
he made 3 in just 6 months just imagine that
He definitely would've been a super star. Along with buddy holly.
Tim O'Brien and fact he was afraid to fly this is tragic and if he never got on the plane he would be here rocking and rolling Rest In Peace Ritchie.
La Bamba remains one of my favourite movies and soundtrack. What a talent...
Most of us at 17 years old are just trying to get through High School and this kid was a superstar, it has been 60 years since that fatal day.

Thanks for your brief documentary, I like that you enterwined it with the real music he played. Donna is a very nostalgic song. My mother was dating dad on the time Donna came out on the radio. When I hear it I remember her.
I think Ritchie Valens would be happy to know that a half century later his music is still as relevant as it ever was. All I can say is thank you.
Ritchie Valens was truly "One of the GREATS". Well done RITCHIE !!! R I P .
17 years young and his Songs will live for ever. All Gone to soon they are still influencing today! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I really like these segments.
Thanks, we’re happy to hear that! Check out our home page for all the videos.
Everytime I hear the story of the conditions the musicians had to endure on the winter dance party tour, it reminds me of some gigs we played up in northern Michigan in mid winter in the late 70s. It was so cold our vans would not supply enough heat. During that whole little so called tour, I thought about Buddy, Ritchie, and J.P.. It was horrible. We made it though and joked how true musicians would toss 5 thousand dollars of equipment in vans worth around 5 hundred dollars each, and drive hundreds of miles in freezing cold to play a gig and make a hundred bucks... "NUTZ"
Such a well researched, beautiful video! I love the way you incorporated the footage of Valens from "Go, Johnny Go!" Most versions of that video on CZcams are often low quality and only include the same clip of him singing, whereas you diversified the clips and showed high quality versions of scenes that aren't on CZcams. He was taken away from us far too soon, and your video is so atmospheric and really immerses the viewer into the 50s when they watch it. Amazing job!
His talent can't be denied. I was inspired to start singing after being exposed to his music my father.
I really love this video and thank you for making it. How horribly ironic and tragic that Ritchie died in a plane crash. I can only imagine his sheer terror and instant regret as he realized the plane was going down and only after a mere five minutes into the flight. Pobre Ritchie. I also didn't realize he was only seventeen when he died. What an insanely talented young man. I can only imagine the devastation his family felt and the world of his fans. I also noticed how the narrator seem to choke up at the end which gives this video A touch of humanity, well done!!!! Rest in peace and love, Richard Valenzuela. 🖤🙏🖤

So sad times with the loss of so much talent. I was born on the 17th April 1959, just after these wonderful talented guys died and on my 1st birthday we also lost the very talented Eddie Cochran. My music legacy was born to always celebrate those we lost in the height of a music revolution.

I've recently taken an interest in Ritchie Valens. Very talented, gifted young man. Very handsome, too. What hurts most is not just the plane crash killing 4 people, but it killed one who was only 17 years old, who never had the chance to grow and become a real man. Still, the fact that all of you are talking about him, still listening to him, shows his power and influence. He must of really been something really special.
He was a man

He was introverted but very easy to chat with with no similarity to Lou Diamond Phillips.
I'm from Iowa. The actual crash site is very underwhelming. The farmer who owned the land they crashed on was gracious enough to leave a walkway and the site open. Otherwise people might not know where it was at all
