TRUE STORY: In 1986, I was an extra on La Bamba. We were shooting the concert scene at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in LA where Ritchie performs La Bamba for the first time. The director instructs everyone to start rushing the stage and dance when the cameras roll. After he yells: "cut", I approach him and confidentially tell him that I saw several people dancing The Twist and he says: "so?". I then proceed to tell him that The Twist wasn't invented until several years after Ritchie passed away. He quickly got on his bullhorn and told everyone to "Not Dance The Twist!".
one blooper that made it into the script was that ritchie had no rhythm and his recordings had to be spliced in from several takes. i just took a listen to his pacoima performance of la bamba. it's a little slower than the studio recording, but the rhythm and tempo are consistent. can't believe 90% of what those biopics tell us.
La Bamba that's what you call a real movie I'm not knocking the movies of today but back then that was a movie and Lou Diamond Phillips played that role real good. alright you and your family stay safe and take care
I was Richie's age in 1987 when my mother won 2 movie tickets on the radio that summer to the premiere of La Bamba in Idaho Falls Idaho. It was a beautiful summer in '87 to be a seventeen-year-old, first job, first love, and then going to the movie theater to see this for the first time on the big screen with Mom She loved the music and shared her memories with me of experiencing this through the 50's.
Ritchie's real mom Concha had a cameo in La Bamba, In the scene where Concha was filming home movies. Brother Bob was a consultant on the movie & Concha had cancer & lived long enough to see the movie giving her closure.

The Ritchie Valens story is both so happy and sad at the same time. All three musicians that died that day were so young and talented, who knows how far they would have gone. It truly was the day the music died.😢
The movie came out 28 years after Richie had passed away. It's been 34 years since the movie was released, more time has passed from the release of the movie until now to keep in perspective. The grave to the left of Ritchie & his mother (15:02) is the grave of his grandfather, Frank Reyes. Ritchie was attending Frank’s funeral the day of the Pacoima plane crash mentioned at the beginning of your video.
My mom got a parking ticket because of this movie…. We lived in Mexicali but crossed the border to Calexico for grocery shopping… they built the “brothel” on 1st and Heffernan and posted signs that the street was closing, but my mom didn’t read English so she parked anyways… and got ticketed. The picture with the painted zebra is the corner or 2nd & Heffernan… the “oasis” and the theater next door do not exist anymore.
Thank you. If it interests you, there is a lot of info about the crash on Google. Just search Pacoima plane crash. There is even audio of the crash. It's pretty interesting and extremely sad

RIP RIchie Valens 🎸🙏
Thank you!!
The grave to the left of Ritchie & his mother (15:02) is the grave of his grandfather, Frank Reyes. Ritchie was attending Frank’s funeral the day of the Pacoima plane crash mentioned at the beginning of your video.
I didn't know that. Thank you for that info and thank you for watching
I ate there a few times at OTTS On San Fernando Rd. with my mom when I was five years old I still remember that place beautiful childhood memories.
Growing up in Pacoima was always cool because I would say I went to Richie's schools
