    The Xtar internal resistance #'s depend on on the connection between the springy probes. It's much more accurate if you tightly and completely compress the springs to get a solid connection as verified by a stand alone meter test.

    Great review! I can see BG sending you their entire stock inventory to review now :-)
    I hope they take note of your observations and update their firmware.
    I'd prefer independent display regions for each cell, but I could live with the 1,4 and 2,3 toggle.
    Worth it just for the accurate IR measuring - Opus is hopeless for IR, (but IIRC they do say in the manual that reads at least 30mΩ too high because of the spring connectors). However, with this is mind it can still give a rough guide to the health of a cell, ie: if the Opus says it's over 150mΩ then I reckon it's ready for recycling or at best a B category.

    15:03 2020 updated model, shows the test cables picture above the correct USB to use, and I've tested well over 110 lots of 4 cells and it remembers them all back 64 levels down, BTW if you replace cells with another before they are all finished it messes up the recording and stays on the same "record" number, you have to wait til they are all green (FULL) and pull them all out for it to start another recording and keep the current one. I got over it (recording) as I have over 1000 batteries to test and write each them as I pull them out!

    I really appreciate your review. You are a very good teacher and don't waste my time -- except for repeated raving about the Dragon being your favorite. :-) That's OK because the video is entertaining as well as informative. Good Job! I just happen to have the same XTAR and OPUS chargers you partially compared, and am in a slow process of comprehensively comparing them myself. As a practical non-technical matter I prefer to use the DRAGON just because of its excellent lighted display. I always seem to use a charger in dim light, and have to get a flashlight or whatever to read the unlit LCD display of the OPUS. I don't have to do that with the XTAR. It seems like the illuminated display would be especially helpful for folks who charge their 18650's when they're out camping or hunting or spelunking or whatever. You might consider mentioning this feature in other evaluations when applicable. Or not. Anyway, thanks for helping me understand my chargers a little better.

    Xtar Dragon VP4 Plus doesnt show accurate capacity readings. I did a lot of tests with 2600mah cells.
    In avarage Dragon did scan these 2600mah cells ~2800mah capacity. The highest were 2920mah.
    While Xtar VC8 did read the same cells a perfect 2630mah to 2710mah. It didnt matter what current or refresh/test was used.

    Something else that's sad, you can charge and test a battery in one port, write the values on it and if you do it in ANY OTHER slot they are different, all are inconsistent with each other, and the discrepancy is sometimes huge, like up to a couple hundred mAh!

  • @brwainer
    @brwainer Před 6 lety +1

    The Dragon VP4 Plus will remember up to 500 test results BUT it only saves when all 4 cells finish. So if you start 4, and then replace each one as soon as it finishes and keep doing that all day, then you'll never get to the state where all 4 are finished, and it won't save the results. In other words, it only saves groups of 4, and if you replace a cell before the rest of the group is done then it will just make that new cell part of the group instead of the old one.

    Thank you for your review. I just received my XTAR Dragon VP4 Plus. Your review was one of the main reasons that I ordered this charger. The other reason was that I just came out of an extended power outage and I wanted to have this charger as a power bank for my phone and tablet. I do have a couple of questions. The box mentions that there is an "OV Activation function that revives over-discharged batteries". The included paperwork doesn't discuss this feature. I've watched your video several times and I didn't see any mention of it but I may have missed it. How does this 'OV' feature work? Is it automatic or do I need to select it? Also, I ordered batteries at the same time. They were advertised as Panasonic NCR18650B 3400 mAh, 4.9A button top, protected batteries that were on sale because they are discontinued. I tested all the batteries for iR and voltage before beginning the TEST mode. All were between 37 and 42 mOhms. Voltages were all 3.42V. I had tried the batteries in an Olight flashlight first and they all had insufficient voltages as to illuminate the LED. So, is 3.42V some lower limit below which the VP4 will not register? Again, thank you. Keep up the good work.

    • @AveRage_Joe
      @AveRage_Joe  Před 5 lety

      Nice! Yeah they are pretty awesome chargers with a ton of options! The over discharge function should work on anything above 2v if I remember right. There isnt anything special you have to do. I personally havent run across any button top cells(which is crazy) but 3.42v isnt all that low. The flashlight should have illuminated! Most new cells are shipped at storage voltage of 3.4-3.6v. Are you saying the charger wont charge them back up? If that is the case I would say the protection board(button top) is enabled or bad. However you were able to ohm and voltage check them. Hmmmmmm Did you try just charging them or doing the test mode only?

    • @frederickmartin6998
      @frederickmartin6998 Před 5 lety

      @@AveRage_Joe I was in the middle of the first four batteries in the TEST mode when I messaged you. They all turned out good. Back to the OV activation, I read that if a 18650 protected battery is over discharged a circuit will open, voltage will fall to zero and you cannot charge them. The XTAR box says that it can "revive" them. Is this true and if so how is this accomplished? Automatically or must I do something?

    • @AveRage_Joe
      @AveRage_Joe  Před 5 lety

      Oh ok gotcha. I believe those boards are there to prevent over discharge like you said and cut it off but thats a worse case thing at 2.5v. If it doesnt let you recharge after the pcb kicks in you could always rip it off to revive and recharge the cells. Did you want the cells for the protection or just got them cause they were cheaper in price since they were discontinued.

    • @davidrobertson1980
      @davidrobertson1980 Před rokem

      @@frederickmartin6998 bit late here, but I have held another charged 1.2v battery with a wire across the discharged one (in the charger) and sometimes they charge initially as a NiCad (a bit weird) until the voltage is high enough, you can then pull it out and back in and it will charge as a L-ion cell. I find crappy cells are ok for non critical stuff like toys and torches etc. and then recycle them at the supermarket cell disposal bin.

      A few reasons. Let say you buy some cells and they claim 3400mah but you capacity test them and they show 1200mah. Then you know you have fake cells. If you recycle cells for making your own battery packs, you need to know the discharge capacity to make equal packs.

    You did not test a aaa battery in your in depth review, had you done so, you would have found it does not hold the battery in the correct position and is problematic to get it to charge, very poor design and the reason I will be returning mine.

    • @jadu79
      @jadu79 Před 6 lety

      thought you also wrote ohm on the video also when comparing (if it were correct you would not be able to get a 1/10 amp out of the battery at a short circuit) ;-)
      and I've noticed in other video saying Watt or kW when you mean kWh
      so sometimes it will be the wrong size / scale and sometimes wrong between power and energy
      (think everyone understands what you mean but thought it might be worth thinking)

    what about this compared with Nitecore SC4?

    • @AveRage_Joe
      @AveRage_Joe  Před 3 lety

      No comparison at all actually. The SC4 is only a charger. Doesnt have discharge function which is one of the most important functions to tell battery health. Dont get me wrong nitecore chargers are good chargers but many dont have the functions needed. If all you need is a charger for flashlights ect then it would be just fine but there are other cheaper chargers that can do that and more.

  • @Yaxez
    @Yaxez Před 6 lety

    That thing is yuuuuge, aaaand yet it still doesn't charge 9-volt batteries. Shame *ding ding*
    Advantages:
    Can charge D sized batteries, can check non rechargable battery voltage. Cool powerbank feature.
    Disadvantages:
    The Opus can charge at 0.2 , 0.3 , 0.5 , 0.7, 1.0 , 1.5 , 2.0A, charging tiny cells (AAA and below) at 0.5A is way too fast. Opus shows 4 cell statuses at once, Xtar only 2. Opus is more compact.
    Question: is it possible to use alkaline cells for the powerbank feature? I mean, it's not plugged in and all you're doing is discharging the cells.

    Conclusion Charger XTAR Dragon VP4 Plus: Purchase recommendation conditionally. For Li-Ion batteries ok, there was no problem.
    Otherwise: Somewhat difficult to understand, handling annoying.
    No purchase recommendation when using for AA or AAA batteries. Here it came to overcharges, heating the battery and finally worked a charging slot no longer. Here I recommend Panasonic fast chargers.
    The device Xtar VP4 Plus "Dragon" we are very often heavily advertised and one would like to
    "That's it".
    Many and good ideas have flowed into the device here.
    For me, however, it turned out that these were only partially usable.
    Do you want 18650 Li-Ion battery or rechargeable batteries? Ex. Also charge Li-ion battery 26650, no problem.
    You have many functions and for me was u.a. important to see what total capacity the battery has.
    This device ran without any problems and refer to the tests often shown on the internet
    often rely on the Li-ion batteries.
    Unfortunately, there was something on my device that was previously lacking in Li-Ion
    Batteries ran well, with the first use of other batteries a problem. In common
    Batteries AA (Ni-MH) came to heat (very hot), overcharge and permanent
    Charging shaft failure of a charging shaft (Err). This is not possible for this price.
    Since you can better keep your fingers off and unfortunately I can not fully
    recommend.
    My conclusion: If you want to charge 18650 or 26650 batteries, that makes quite a cheaper device.
    For the loading of Ni-MH (AA and AAA) I recommend for me, from experience, available branded goods.

    Bit sad, after I'd had my unit just under 2 years, one charging port (CELL FOUR) started having ISSUES, it "said" it was charging but was not, and because it wasn't (or something) it slowly said it charged (and like a car speedo), going right over 9999 and zero, it was still in warranty also I sent emails to the company with images of the delivery date etc. - no reply, did it a couple of times again and eventually they replied (By this time I had asked for a circuit diagram OR a new board I could replace myself as a trip for it to China and back would take way over 3 months!) IGNORED!!!! I said I would POST a YT video on it, but still haven't - anyway WARNING to buyers, beware poor customer service - they don't CARE about your "hobby". I am yet to do a video and will probably do a DISMANTLING one and possibly a repair or at worst diagnostics only. Having 3 charging ports instead of 4 is a pain in the butt, although they still work. The left most spring is like a 20 year old charger, stiff and creaky, I'd say likely rusty spring or something and has to be pulled back with my finger to insert a battery there for charging. (Never been in a humid place.)
