The Southern Nuclear PWR Fuel Engineering team worked with the fuel vendor Westinghouse to implement the PRIMETM fuel features, where simple improvements to the fuel design would yield both safer operation and long-term cost-savings due to a more robust fuel design. Implementing the PRIMETM fuel features ensures that operator burden from fuel performance is minimized while keeping the reactor unit in a safe operating condition. The PRIMETM fuel features achieved gains in PWR fuel performance margins by leveraging improvements in nuclear materials and ongoing research and development of bottom nozzle flow and debris capture.
