Apple Airtags: A WEEK Later, the HIDDEN Costs and PRIVACY Concerns

  • This is the Apple AirTag, Apple's item tracker. Here's my initial impressions and short term review about using them. You can purchase an AirTag for $30, or a pack of 4 for $100. The back will probably get all scratched up after using it over time, especially with your keys, and the front is just white plastic.

    7:27 Conclusion
    You can play a sound from the airtag and can also set it into lost mode, which will give a prompt to others who find your airtag your email and phone number. If someone owns an android device and finds an airtag, then they can scan it using NFC and find the owner. And lastly the feature people have been showing the most is the precision finding feature, which only works on specific iPhones. When you're close enough to the airtag, your iphone will provide you with directions on how to reach the airtag, putting you on an easter egg hunt for your item. The furthest distance I got precision tracking to start was around 28ft from the product, but that was when the airtag was in a clear open space. When I shoved the airtag into a closet, I needed to get in about 15ft before the precision tracking initiated with directions. When you're not near the airtag, the airtag updates its location by sending a signal out to other iphones and other supported devices around the area to update you on its location. A little over half of all US smartphone users use an iphone so that vast network of ios devices, and other airtags and apple products are used to ping location data for the airtag. That being said. This is not a live tracker. It doesn't update constantly and only updates in intervals of 15 minutes. When it is moving and it happens to update itself, the tracking is sometimes inaccurate.
    But the question everyone has about whether these things could be used to stalk people? That'd be pretty hard, if you have an iphone on iOS 14.5 or later, the airtag will send a notification to your phone after you start going to your frequently visited locations, telling you there's an airtag following you. If you scan the airtag using NFC on ios or android and the webpage will tell you how to disable it if it's not in lost mode. If you're an android user or an iphone user on an older iOS version, then the airtag will start beeping after 3 days of not being with the original owner. I think 3 days is a long time before the thing starts beeping and by that time a potential stalker could figure where you live. That's a scary thought for sure.
    Now let's talk about the price. It's quite nice that airtags are the same price as the tile and cheaper than the tile pro. But I think people look at this price tag and think the airtag is cheaper. Which is not the case. The airtag is round, and the tile is square but with a hole punch in the top left. This leads to more versatility with the tile, letting you easily slide it into a backpack, hooked onto your keys, or even zip tie it to the handle of things. On the other hand, the airtag really can only be slipped into your bag until you buy accessories for it. So the cost of the airtag, if you want to use it any other way than just slipping it in your bag is going to cost you more money.
    So, should you get these? As always, it depends. It does what it sets out to do. It's a tracker for your items, but can be inaccurate when the item is moving. It's not a live tracker. Is the precision tracking cool? it's useful for finding your lost keys around the house, and when you're close by, precision tracking helps you find items faster instead of pulling up every couch cushion trying to find your lost item. So if you're looking for an item tracker, and have an iphone this might be a good place to start, but again understand its limitations and be cautious of that low price tag because of how expensive this could end up being.

    Nice review, but I don't understand why the complaints about "HIDDEN" costs. There's no subscription price like with the Tile and besides, you state that the cheapest holder for it is $9, while you show a page from Amazon that shows one at $5.50! Anyone can get a tile and an Apple holder for less than one year with the Tile. And no more costs after that, visible or hidden!

      Tile is also free to use. The Premium feature came for free with a year trial during many sales but if it didn't it come for free it costs $29.99 and it included smart alert, battery replacement, unlimited sharing, 30 day location history, free tracker replacements with damage and up to $100 warranty if your item isn't found. Apple doesn't offer all those features for free or at all. I have the premium feature as it came free with my tile pro 2022. I use some premium features but I wouldn't pay for it.

      Tile product is good, I would buy more, as for Apple tags, I am open to the idea of getting one to evaluate.
      Tile website and app are dated and with Apple entering the market I hope this will put pressure on Tile to lift their game. Competition is good for business and this will result in better product for us end consumer.
      Tile Marketing could also do more on their website to sell the benefit of their product, I have no idea how many tile users are in my area, even if it is a monthly average where we know there are a lot of iphones around.

    Let me tell you why this terrifies me having some experience with human trafficking. If someone was going to abduct you, say they pick you out at the mall, they can attach this to you and wait for YOU to come to them. Whether that be a parking a lot, a dark alley whatever. Or they can easily follow you back to your place and plan what to do from there. Three days is absurdly long because in three days they will learn your whole routine, they will understand more then enough to effectively do what they want. Whole idea of such a simple tracker that has nearly zero ways to identify who actually owns them and can be bought easily and cheaply is troubling at best. Stay safe ya'll, always know your surroundings.

      A big problem with the airtag is that notifies the bike thief with beeps and phone notifications. If the thief arrive to their home address on their apple ID, it will give them a notification that they have a tracker on them. If the tracker is away from its owner's iphone in 8-24 hours, it will give off beeps and notifications to the thief. It has actually been reduced from the 3 days for stalker reasons and car theft reasons. Apple don't want to be liable for any criminal cases.

    @franksamet Před 3 lety +4

    I tried to find my car keys with an air tag in the house and was disappointed at how much walking around I did for it to get a signal. Their use is best in crowded situations like airports/concerts/stadiums and not for affixing to the family Labrador for when it gets lost in the woods. eBay provides cheap holders @ £2.49 each. If you buy expensive holders your main use of the tags will be in tracking the holders. It would also be useful to be able to share air tag locations with family members as like the dog some items are not owner specific. Remember you can also obtain GPS trackers that are fairly cheap, tell you where they are when you ping them and might be a better alternative for your needs.

    • @mrljgibson
      @mrljgibson Před rokem

      The problem with GPS trackers is that they need signal and line of sight, if your pet goes to ground it might not be possible, plus they tend to be battery hungry, I'd rather have something far more power conscious in case it takes a long time to track them down, plus the localised find feature to give an idea of direction is a winner as actually finding them can still be a challenge. I know this having thought my cat had run off only to find her yesterday, a week later, hiding in our living room, and she left no clues until then.

      Technically yes. The airtag can potentially tracked by 50% of all phones in the US (apple marketshare). The tile app is on about 7% of all phones in the US and therefore has a much smaller user base.

    It is nothing dangerus or strange or scarry that locator locates! It is scary that thef will know how to get rid of it. Only what have to do is set his home in Apple ID like middle odf forest - then go to that location with stolen things, disable everything and gone. There are 10 000 other locators (most with real GPS) on market and that was never a problem of stalking disputed. It is like there is a problem with knifes cose they are sharp :/
    And it is anty thieft device - Apple advertise is as for bikes. Bikes do not lose them selfs like keys, they went stolen. Thats real stupid idea to inform thef 3 days later. Maby 50 days where new owner have your stolen bike, but not 3 when there is 100% probability that thief will hide it for month in basement and sell later!

Where I live, it’s a nice track home area with an elementary shook within 2 blocks away and with all these houses almost everyone has an iPhone so we were thinking it’ll help if I were to collapse into a seizure those iPhones would be helpful in pinging my last location to help finding me

    From my own experience, I'm a little underwhelmed. I bought the tags, firstly out of curiosity, and secondly to act as a 'kind' of tracker should my expensive (for me anyway) electric bike be stolen. So my problem - as soon as the tag is concealed I'm lucky if I can get more than 10 feet away before I lose its signal. If I want precision tracking, well, I literally have to be right on top of it.

    I believe after this review and wanting to know what an “Air Tag” is. I don’t think I will bother with it. As long as you remember where you place your keys within a certain distance, good chance you will find them yourself. As far as the phone is concerned, I already have 2 different ways to track them for free. This does nothing when it comes to theft and all this cost is just a way to waste money on crap you may never really have a use for. It may help you find your keys, but then again most of us tend to find them ourselves after a little searching. Thanks for the video, helping me understand this and save a few bucks.

  • @tigra770

    Had the tile for well over year and a half. The amount of time I was able to use it for tracking...ZERO. Why, because the Tile wants you to pay a monthly fee, to use the "feature" that it sells you on. F the few dollar price for an "accessory", Tile wants to charge you forever. So, out of the gate, I had my wife remove the Tile from her purse. Surprise, the battery was dead. Why, because I could never use it. Gave her the airtag, and in minutes was using the "precise location" in the house. Works great. But can it really TRACK where that purse goes. YES. She was out all day yesterday, and while i could tell the tracker only updates every few minutes, I was able to know where she was as she moved from errand to errand. This gives me hope, that if her purse is lost or stolen, it can possibly be recovered. While this review is decent, the nuetral position is crap. Buy the airtag as there is NO infinite upcharge for "premium service" which is exactly the service you are expecting to already have paid for.
