- Romhacking update... unfortunately some bad stuff appears to have happened. I personally have no ties to any of these people, I do not know anyone involved or any specific details other than what was written in the post... but regardless it all seems messed up. This was a awesome resource plenty of us utilized and learned from..

This is bad… some rom hacks are basically totally new games, quality of life improvements, translations to games that have little to no chance of ever getting official translations, bug fixes, etc etc… 😢
Don't worry -- it's just one website, and it was getting enshitified.
@@JB-mm5ff speaking from experience, I'll tell you this, submitting a rom hack to that site was a pain in the arse, to the point I straight up gave up with it
So? Wtf are you talking about
I 100% agree. There are fan translations that are very important to the history of video gaming. Many times if a game has a major problem, a hacker will eventually fix it or re-balance it.
Really been rough the last few months. 3DS & Wii U shops shutting down, X360 store getting shut down. Now this…
And vimms lair being forced to remove a bunch of Nintendo, sega and sony roms.
@@michaeljoseph9390
I forgot about thats too. Damn…
3DS and Wii U SERVERS, not shops. Shops closed in 2023
Then you tube shuts down and some flash players to play games shut down.
Even then…someone at least cares enough to keep them running even after the closure
Man that site has been a godsend with the translations of games released outside of the US, improvement patches, extra content patches, etc. After reading the comments in here I feel everyone’s pain in here. I have enjoyed that site so much and this one of the most awful things that has ever happened to the retro community. Something has to be done about this. We need to get a new site up asap!
Had to look it up but this was the site I got the translations for Clocktower the first fear. If it wasn't for this site I would have never played it as it was a Japanese only title. That was back in 2015, man time flies.
It's a bummer. It's not just hacks, but translations and tools as well. I hope there's a successor to it that continues things.
Such a shame. Hopefully the community will assume the mantle and create some sort of continuation/replacement. At least everything was archived.
Internet assholes always have to out of their way to ruin things for everyone...
To be unfair, we know that big companies (we all know whoN) hire messed up actors to sabotage these things. Worst, some (messed up) people chill for them for free. Truly sad
Remove Internet and you'll still be right.

The future is going to be private networks cut off from the internet, kind of reverting to the pre-internet era but on a wider scale for personal network communities disconnected from the internet as a whole. That’s the only way to keep the experience its best at the cost of having to disconnect and reconnect to a network based on the niche or community.
End of an era
I'm sick and tired of this end of an era junk I've been facing over 40 years in my lifetime. I personally cannot wait to get an afterlife world where there won't be anymore "end of an era" ruining everything or taking away access to stuff that I have to endure in this earthly life or earthly and digital possessions disappearing.
A lot of this creates a lot more questions than answers, the big one being who was targeting them and why. I pray that there wasn't some messed up stuff going on behind the scenes of this site. Regardless, this is a massive loss for all of the retro gaming scene. I hope people get to making backups of all the data!
I really dislike posts like this. What’s the point of posting something like this to the public that really only insiders can understand? Either tell the whole story or just shut it.
@@manuel0578,
The point of a comment section is for people to put their thoughts into words. What Epic was doing was not much different from what MatPat did for much of his life.
@@phoenixdaronco9540 I’m talking about this ambiguous post on romhacking
Wow. That's a massive blow to the hack & homebrew community.
Thanks for Mother 3 translation! Yes I know it can be found elsewhere but that’s where I got it
With my own projects up on the site and having been an active Submission Reviewer, I knew that Nightcrawler wanted out. For the past few months I had hoped things would have been smoother. I don't know the details about what things NC had been dealing with but I hope for him and his family the best.
translations were such a monumental part of this site. shame it’s closing - what other sites are out there like this one?
I literally don't know of one. This was the place for them. It's a huge blow to game translations.
I think cdromance is one
CDRomance provides prepatched translated games. But it's not really a romhacking centric website
Zophar's was the first one I discovered back in the nineties. The Whirlpool used to be another one.
@@1UpJohnalways remember to never put all your eggs in one basket.
Dammit.. This was usually my go-to for specific translations and hacks
😞 This really really sucks! WTH man! This is worse than a rom site getting shutdown.
To think the world, internet, and community has change so much in those past 20ish years! Sadly, narcissistic idiots have caught wind of these type
of hobbies as well.
You pointed that. Back when Internet was barely a thing most people who got there made efforts and tried to be polite.
Nowadays when something can be used for personal gain (to the detriment of others) there will always be opportunists.
Facebook and Twitter made the internet so mean…
One of the new additions to the webb last years that annoys me so much is all those "accept cookies to continue".
And also how BlackRock and Vanguard control almost everything.

It's admirable to not mention the names of these shitty individuals, but I feel they should be known so others can be wary of them in the future.
You mean that they should be known so they can be targeted in retaliation and escalate the cycle of hate? Because that's exactly what would happen.

I'm sorry to hear about this. Makes me miss the days before the internet.
This site got the Zelda 1 ROM hack "Ancient Dungeon". Love that one!
These ROM hacks brings new life to all old games. Love that!
im sad im not going to be able to update my nba jam mod project one last time. the one i have up there is unfinished and flawed

@@alexxxanderwest there’s two hacks, nba jam rewind for the arcade which adds Jordan and Shaq, and nba jam 22 for the Ps1 which adds modern players to the game like Steph curry, lebron, embiid, Jokic etc. u can probably find it on cdromance or archive
Downloading the RHDN archive right now. I can't believe this bs.
Where can I find the URL
They just need to do what romulation did and just take their links offline by making them into comments- then the user basically uses a plugin that has a script editor for the webpage to edit the webpage on the fly to remove the comment hash marks..effectively making the links active again.
This is why we can't have nice things..
God damn it nooooo! This hobby/ community being dismantled piece by piece
I hate to say it but these companies are really pushing the dystopian "you will own nothing and like it" mantra
Hopefully someone can pick up the database and file dumps and recreate the next great rom hack site
That's horrible to hear! I was on there today putting together a couple of game hacks!
ME, IMMEDIATELY: NINTENDO, NO! NOT AGAIN!!!
NINTENDO: What??? (completely unaware of the situation)
ME: Sorry, force of habit.
Yeah l was certain it was Nintendo when l saw the thumbnail. You can't blame us
Well at least you had the decency to actually watch the video. Not everyone did that.
lolololol damn, something Rom Related that we cant blame nintendo for.
Sadly this kind of crap has always been around in the community. I used to be an admin for Sonic Retro, and during the period where our forums were called Sonic Classic, there were members of another forum called Sonic CulT that would hack/delete/trash our forums just because they thought it was funny/fun to get a rise out of us. Far too often did we need to restore from backup and constantly try to increase security just because they thought it was fun to be cruel.
That's unfortunate, I was using Rom Hacking even this year for things like English translations of Wizardry Empire and Kaeru no Tame.
This reminds me of the devs of Nesticle back in the day when the code got leaked they just stopped working on it and left the scene. The emulation and rom hacking scene is a strange community.
I believe that maybe when a person sees their work in the air they get discouraged.
Or they're just nerds that threw a hissy fit.
Best thing about these hacks were some of the SRAM upgrades. Almost a requirement to use on the Analogue Pocket that doesn't support save states for SNES, GENS
I'm sorry this is going way over my head, how is SRAM related to save states on the pocket?
@@tubguinace SRAM is how the game saves. I cant tell by the wording, but i think the analogue pocket doesnt save state on 16 bit consoles, so SRAM is the only way to save.
@@tubguinace Let's take a game like Mega Man X3, has a password system. If I play through it, I can't continue where I left off on the pocket unless I re-enter the password right? The cores don't have that feature yet to save state. With these added SRAM hacks, I can save the heart tanks, weapon upgrades, right from where I left off. And this is for a lot of games on SNES and GENS.
@@scrapbrainsinc Ah I see, basically a way to locally save games that normally use the password system
All of the Strike games got SRAM upgrades, which are really nice.
This is bad, like very bad news for the homebrew/hacking community
What a shame. Like you said, this is why we can't have nice things. And yet another pillar of the retro-game community bites the dust 😢
I can't believe it's gone. Unreal.
They are really trying to put a stop to the history we are so hardly trying to preserve and keep alive, what is wrong with these idiots of the gaming industry
“Some people just want to watch the world burn.”
WTF???? Goddamn it, this sucks. I swear at this point internet archive is our last refuge for roms and hacks. once that goes, its P2P forever....
Yeah, I remember when a fangroup I used to associate with turned out to be excessively hostile and aggro against the people who made the game, and I nearly cried. These were people I thought were friends being completely awful to the people responsible for why we met in the first place.
Humanity is complex. There's good and bad in everyone and I'm every group, and trying to collectively make the world pleasant is hard.
This is why we cant have nice things..... 😞
Love that site so many awesome rom hacks. Some of my favorites are the streets of rage 2 rom hacks, the color hacks for games like castlevania bloodlines and hyperstone heist, and the fast rom hacks that help remove bad slowdown in snes games like magic sword which is my favorite snes game.
I've been around the rom hacking scene since the late 90s and this honestly doesn't surprise me, it's practically sorority level drama behind the scenes all the time. It's more shocking that they lasted this long.
What's with the more "nerdy" circles of video games and other hobbies like TTRPG with dramas behind the scene?
Why video games have the highest concentration of drama queens?
I knew that this would end up ending the site. I had a bad feeling about that and warned Nightcrawler a long time ago...i hate it when i'm right on my bad feelings, dammit!
The end of an era. Better to start archiving. Someone (or some group, i'd say) is trying to wreak havoc on the old foundations for games preservation and improvement.
Archive locally, people. Archive, and preserve everything. I'm fearing they want to erase history in a mean-intentioned way; but the more we archive and can upload eternally, the better.
Archive. Archive and Phisically collect EVERY GAME YOU LIKE. The future will thank you.
So what exactly happen
I fear that they're going to be mad enough to alert ISPs. But I could care less. I'm off to buy a 4 drive NAS if I can find one and a bunch of surveillance WD Purple. May be slow but in this case more TB is preferred over speed.
Back to LimeWire.
Does LimeWire still exist?
I second this question. I thought it died with “BearShare”?
How bout dat winmx eh
Remember everything lives on the archive
Well for now. I would be more confident if the archive itself didn't mess things up during the lockdowns.
Damn it... why does there always have to be this type of kindergarten drama in the rom scene.
That is a really important resource for lots of people that just went poof.
And as always the masses get to hear of it after the fact.
Gonna have to look for that archive ...hope it is usable at all in that format, but i almost expect a horribly sorted and named mess of zip files that is incomprehensible to use for humans without the website in-between.
It's on the Internet Archive. There's a link in the comments, but you've probably seen that already. Short answer: Yeah, pretty much.
Because generally the type of people who would put that much effort into ROM hacks are also extremely childish
So glad I have my full sets of retro systems up to the ps2 and GameCube. For now anything past that requires more space than most HDD and SSD can handle. I keep backups as well.
Hurry ppl download everything before is gone forever
I gotta finish hacking my wii before it's too late
This is terrible news. This site has been a retro gamers best friend so sad to see this happen.
Breaks my heart had a blast with snes fan translations. Playing games I would have never been able to experience.
Noooooooooooooooo!!!
Homebrew DX versions of GB games 👌😢
Damn, this is a sad day. The end of an era, smh.
I hope several people make backups of the site before its fully shutdown and host it on a new site eventually. Looks like internet archive will be the last refuge for an abundance of rom hacks.
I feel like reddit, discord, youtube, tiktok, and instagram are to blame for killing quite abit of the internet. If you dont have a top used app, you will be done before you know it.
It sounds like someone set up a trap for the owner, and when they got some key files, they made a legal threat using it as evidence
Messed up, beyond sad
Any reason why the video was taken down and then put up again? This is a duplicate upload.
Damn I was just getting ready to dive into romhacking. Where else can I find the tools now? Especially for N64.
who has beef with Rom Hacks?
Nintendo
Internal power struggle. Group on Discord server tried to take over site. He says what happened in later paragraphs
That SUCKS, and Vimm's lair is getting hit by Nintendo just like other rom sites have had happen.
I think it's time to buy hard drives of several Terabytes and download fullsets to keep them safe.
so are they going to be preserved or not?
All the stuff on the website has been uploaded to the Internet Archive. If somebody wants to carry on the torch, they can use that data to build a new site. But what's stopping the assholes responsible for this from doing it again?
"Dehumanizing" is an interesting word to use to describe conflict. That type of framing seems to connotate a certain ideological bent, which may or may not explain the rest of that cryptic, kinda overly dramatic letter. It may be I'm wrong, but that does give off certain vibes I've seen patterns of online. Hmm...
I really, REALLY hope there wasn't any messed up stuff going on behind the scenes...

The hate group essentially won over Nightcrawler. So he is letting them win.
But why the hate to begin with? Did Nightcrawler say one of their babies was ugly or something? Why was there any nonsense going on to begin with?
@@Madlittlepixel I want answers to this, to! WHY? Why did this have to happen? Did NC not anoint another heir-apparent? Was it politics? If so, what kind? I really want to know how this could come about.

The Internet archive neads to make a backup of this website on the wayback machine!
It's funny to read so many comments that sound like they think that 1) this is a site that hosted ROMs, and 2) the site is completely gone already. Neither of these things are true. It's still up. Downloads are still available. The main things that have been lost at present are the founder's involvement and the ability to submit works to the site. Most of you reading this won't care about either of these things. For now, nothing's changed at all for the average visitor to the site.
Oh? Thanks for that. At least it's safe unlike other sites that deal with this issue & instead just go down completely.
Stop spreading misinformation! Nightcrawler said that he's going to start shutting down most of the website except for the forums. All those rom patches & their pages will get deleted eventually. That's why he copied everything to a zip file & uploaded it to the Internet Archive.
@@Animebryan2 No, everything was released to the archive because they don't actually control the downloads anymore. As noted in the news post, their continued availability is in the hands of several others.
