- Exploring the first level of the station (Medical Level). I have played this level prior to the recording so I knew where to go and what to do, however, since the game allows you to tackle its levels in several different ways, I took the different route (while still trying to clear the entire map, though).
- Hry
I like that whenever you enter new rooms you're always leaning in and being safe about it, it's adorable.
That's not meant to be an insult it's just what makes this quirky and fun to watch.
"Look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone. Ducking and leaning as you run through my corridors."
You may think the game and controls are clunky - but once you got into this game, you will be hooked. A true gem of survival, action and horror. You will be crawling on your belly, peeking around corners and count your ammo, dreading the mutant horrors and feel the the joy of elevator music.
It’s also sci-fi due to having to fight robots, and cyborgs
I was very skeptical, but i was so into the System shock lore i had to play it! and it's true, you get hooked pretty fast, i actually enjoy a lot the controls in SS1, something i never thought id say
I like it better than 2 after replaying both dozens of times. The plot in 2 is kinda cartoonish (not entirely to its detriment, but mostly) and the RPG character building mechanics can be a bit arbitrary and confusing at times.
Finally, the DOS version!
I gotta admit, after all that fighting and exploring, hearing the elevator music at the end made me laugh.
+ShinigamiSparda yeah :)
But then you go to the second floor and get a surprise...
+code13324124 Yeah, I saw that. God damn, SHODAN don't play.
the elevator is your sanctuary in many cases in this game^^
Love me some clunky DOS controls, thank you for this longplay!
Pretty great to watch this alongside footage of the new remake demo and see the comparisons. The main thing which has changed in the remake is the music, it feels like they are going for a slower, creepier atmosphere which SS2 had.
The level design in this really reminds me of Powerslave/Exhumed. Pretty cramped corridors going everywhere.
43:19 - "We have encountered the Borg."
what an AMAZING game !!! thank you so much for this walkthrough !!!
Thank you for watching :)
That music tho LOL
Watching ur walkthrough made me by the gog version of the game to play through it for the 3rd time. But guess what... I'm stuck in the 1st level. Every enemy is dead, the security level is down to 0%, but the door to the elevator is locked. What am I missing?
+Mr3DZocker Thanks :)
As for the elevator... I honestly thought all you needed to do was bring the security level down to 0%, but it seems that's not all you needed... There might be a switch near the replicator that does the job, but I just explored the whole level and pushed all the switches, so one of them probably did it...
So this is Original version of System Shock 1 which released in 90s ?
AA/AD J not quite. It's system shock portable, basically an og version with couple of mods installed. Night dive announced and released enhanced edition just as I was about to finish this run so I decided not to restart on EE.
hi, I just downloaded the classic version but it is not possible to select neither the mouselook nor the high resolution ... how do you do it?
The version I've played was the fan-made "enhanced edition" that included some mods. This version was removed when NightDive acquired the rights to the game. I guess SS classic just doesn't come with mlook or high resolution support so you have to install them yourself. Or it might be hidden somewhere in the settings, I honestly didn't play NightDive version at all.
Severonsky
I may have missed it, but what difficulty setting is this? Looks to me like Combat 3, plot 2, puzzles 1, cyberspace 0 or 1.
IIRC I've left everything on default, so it's 2-2-2-2.

Судя по изображению сверху, ГГ садится на карты :D
+rusPiglets более того, он еще и бегать в таком состоянии может :D
Is this game and its sequel good enough to warrant another sequel or remake?
They're both fantastic games. Maybe a bit obtuse for modern audiences so an updated version might be a good idea (the controls suck in both games). There is one problem though. System Shock 2 was very influential so a LOT of games copied its style and gameplay features to various degree (from blatant copies to spiritual successors) to the point that the original game might seem pretty... unoriginal. Generic, even. System Shock 1, on the other hand, feels fresher since there aren't many immersive sims / first person metroids out there. SHODAN's amazing in both games though, great villain. So yeah, let's do a sequel/remake but please, PLEASE don't make it into another system shock 2 clone, we've already had enough of those...
Yes
We are getting a remake of SS1. Nightdive is hoping for a summer 2021 release.
Rookie... 😉
To any who might be bothered to type up the times when logs are played for those who only want the story; thank you kindly.
What difficulty level is this?
It's 2222 iirc
System Shock 2...certainly was an improvement over this game. This high-tempo, Doom-esque music really is throwing me off.
I feel the opposite, System Shock 2 has too many superfluous mechanics that drag down the whole experience. I prefer System Shock 1 solely because its the only Shock game that doesn't shit itself in the final act.
It is because of the excellent DOS music this is a masterpiece. But you need to play it on 14" CRT monitor to fully experience its beauty.
Why do we always fucking start with the Medical Bay be it Von Braun or that Station? goddamn System Shock 2 gave me that trauma...
+Placido Penitente Haha, that's true...
Well it's kind of justified in both games. In SS1 you were put into a coma to heal following an operation to insert those military grade implants into your body. In SS2 you were put into coma because \someone\ needed a reason for you to forget past events.
Come to think of it... SHODAN didn't do anything to you in SS1 because the operation was illegal and they didn't have you listed in the station records which SHODAN used to track everyone down...
And System Shock 2? Why are we there? Aren't we supposed to be in Active Duty?
+Placido Penitente spoiler warning, I guess...
Basically, it's the same is SS2, you were recovering after an operation to install implants. The only major difference is that unlike SS1 the operation was done to you against your will (they took you to the operation room while you were sleeping) because \someone\ needed a helper.
Yeah and I happen to know who that person was, and here I am the idiot believing she's alive...
+Placido Penitente I think she tells you that your memory was damaged because of the pod or something and that's why you don't have any recollection of the events that happened when you got the signal from Tau Ceti. In reality they deleted those deliberately...
SS still looks wild. Weird, cluttered UI, borderline unreadable Fonts and slightly unfitting Midi-Music. Not to forget the awesome mismatched colors of the maps (lots of cyan).
I always found the nusic so anoying. On the other hand, silent is far more terryfying, quiet and calm... And that feeling of dread
Oh lawd this music is terrible lol.
It's certainly ill-fitting.
completely disagree !!! I find this "cyber-music" overlay AMAZING and also sooooo …. relaxing !!!
this "cyber-music" theme combined with the "robotic-like" occasional sound effects was the main reason that this game got my attention in the first place !!!
----P.S. From what I've seen at a System Shock Review video ,the music overlay of the game was supervised by actual musicians and music bands of that time !!!!!
( whomever is interested about System Shock's music overlay ,check at 09:04 in this video/review : czcams.com/video/Vnh0l_Ecpx4/video.html )
DOS music usually is ugly, but if you look into its making, it's a true work of art. Specially Level 6's music
later ones in the game absolutely slap.
when this one in particular ramps up it's basically this game's very own at doom's gate
