  • T-shirt presses are used to apply designs to t-shirts. But wait! Not only can they be used for transferring DTFs (direct-to-film) and other heat transfer designs to clothing, hats, mugs, etc....they can also be used to heat kydex for making knife sheaths and other similar products. In this video knife maker Walter Sorrells reviews an affordable 15 inch t-shirt press from Vevor. Is it any good for making sheaths? How about shirt designs? Find out here!

    Few tips...
    -HeatPressNation silicon pads and teflon sheets are the way.
    -check your platen temp with an IR thermometer and compare with temp on the readout. If there is a discrepancy (which there often is) there should be a way to calibrate.
    -clamshell type heat presses are ofter way cheaper than swingaway presses and require less bench space.
    -always heat material shiny side up.
    -adjust the clamping pressure to "fairly heavy". This will reduce the amount of shrinkage of material.
    -boltaron is superior to kydex in just about every way, especially when heating with a heat press, as you can pump the temp up and get better definition and longer working time. I usually run mine at 400 degrees for 120 secs for 0.80" material.
    -take an old towel place it in the press and run a few cycles to preheat the pad and drivev out any moisture that it may have absorbed. If you're heating material and getting little pockmarks on the shiny side, its usually due high humidity in the silicone pad.

    I picked up the other style heat press that hinges from the back instead of swiveling. I have used it on a few cloth projects and a couple Kydex. I like it much better than the toaster oven, which you can't do t-shirts in, LOL. Getting multiple uses out of a tool is a good thing.

    I’ve been using this style of press for a few months now and he’s right it works great!

    Interesting tempering oven :D

    There must be some good reason why we cannot combine the press' ability to press, and the heat it provides at the same time? The press I have has adjustable hinge that would allow for the thickness of the kyadex and sandwiching the thing I am trying to mold (not a weapon). Just wondering.

    Until I read the comments it never occurred to me that this could be used for tempering. If the temp control is more accurate than a toaster oven, lots of folks might want to use it for that. Still going to use my Evenheat, though.

    I've seen other T shirt Presses that clamp down, I was always curious if you could heat the kydex, then throw the foam in there and press on one machine but I bet the press would be too hot for the foam at that point?

    • @tomsdreamshopworx
      @tomsdreamshopworx Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yup, too hot, but I did see a Kydex user pre-
      heat the foam a bit with the press open. He thought it helped some.

      @@tomsdreamshopworx Well I guess the press doesnt make much sense then from a space perspective since as a knife maker you probably already have a toaster oven for tempering in the shop which will get the kydex job done, no sense adding another tool.

      @@knifeknerdreviews4609 Unfortunately, I am not a knife maker yet. I will get there. And I do have a small toaster oven out in my shop, it was too small to fit a wide sheet in it. It's all good!

      I always preheat my foam by just laying it on top of the platen while the material is heating. A heat gun works well also.

    What's the brown paper you use in the heat press?

  • @patw999
    @patw999 Před 8 měsíci

    Well, it went from $159 to $299. Guess when it’s duel purpose they can afford to raise the price….. or (gasp) Walter was wrong and he mentioned $259? Just kidding. I don’t know what the hell it’s supposed to cost lol.

      $239 (USD) today... but after registering it drops to $189.
