Chetta, I don't agree with one point. Income tax Act, Rules, Amendents, Circular, Notification and all cannot be taught in School as the subject will be very much hectic for students. In my opinion, tax related procedures and filing should be handled by professionals like CA who are expert in it. As a CA student, I know how much difficult that subject is. 😅

In CA inter level , there are 5 books only for taxation which a single paper and in CA final level, there are 3 papers related to Taxation. So, what I wanted to say is that, you can't expect a student going to school to study all these act, rules, and all. If you don't study all these laws together, you won't be able to properly understand it as they ( Act, rules, amendments etc) are interconnected. Now a days, government are thinking of how to reduce the syllabus of the children. Then, how can you expect the children to study all these laws which is so huge in volume. If tax as a subject is introduced in school curriculum, I am sure more than half of the students will fail in that subject. Even, a Bcom degree graduated person who must have studied tax won't be able to file proper returns of income tax because all the provisions are not taught to them. So, If you are thinking about " tax planning" it can be done professionally only by experts. Yaa, one thing is true that if you are having the time to put effort in learning, understanding and also in practical application of all the tax related provisions, you can do your own filing. Most of the people don't understand these laws related to tax, that's why they hire other people for tax filing and all. Also, there are many grey areas in tax related provisions which common people won't be able to understand unless there is an assistance from experts.
I understand your concern about the complexity of tax topics, but let's not underestimate the power of basic preparation. I don't know your definition about " fundamental tax concept". One thing is sure that only some concepts of tax will be taught in it. Teaching only some concepts of tax related provisions won't help us in the complete understanding of tax as a subject. As there is a saying, half-knowledge is worse than ignorance. There are chances that a person with knowledge of some concepts may end up paying high taxes to the government because of non utilisation of tax mitigation benefits. If a student have to study tax subject with other 5-6 subjects, they will definitely be overburdened with studies. They might not even get time for other extra curricular activities. But, when an official is planning to take a decision on which all Subjects should be taught to students , they will have to think from a macro level point of view and not from a micro level or some exceptional students point of view. If a salaried person have to file a tax return, it might not be a difficult task for him. But when we are talking about people having business and investment in different financial assets ( Sebin Chettan Case) , there will be more tax complicity involved in it. Some of the complex tax provisions related to " PGBP" are as follows:- What all expenses are allowed in business , what are the conditions for claiming depreciation, classification of depreciable assets, different rates of depreciable assets, methods for calculating depreciation, restrictions on depreciation, additional depreciation, when to use half rate and full rate, taxation of grants/subsides from govt, treatment of interest on loan taken for acquiring assets, assets partly used for other purposes, preliminary expenses conditions, Section 35AD where 100% deduction can be claimed, how to claim deduction of benefits given to employees, bad debts recovery Section 41(4), General deduction u/s 37, presumptive taxation u/s 44AD for business and 44ADA for professionals and 44AE for transporters, and more. These concepts are only related to business. There are many more tax concepts related to salary, house property, capital gains, and income from other sources. If a person is supplying goods and services, he/she will have to pay GST to the government. GST laws are completely different from income tax laws. So, we can't expect students to study all these at elementary school level. They can study these at a higher level. Even ChatGPT and Google are not able to solve the tax related numerical questions of CA final level exam😂.

Some of the complex tax provisions related to " PGBP" are as follows:- What all expenses are allowed in business , what are the conditions for claiming depreciation, classification of depreciable assets, different rates of depreciable assets, methods for calculating depreciation, restrictions on depreciation, additional depreciation, when to use half rate and full rate, taxation of grants/subsides from govt, treatment of interest on loan taken for acquiring assets, assets partly used for other purposes, preliminary expenses conditions, Section 35AD where 100% deduction can be claimed, how to claim deduction of benefits given to employees, bad debts recovery Section 41(4), General deduction u/s 37, presumptive taxation u/s 44AD for business and 44ADA for professionals and 44AE for transporters, and more. These concepts are only related to business. There are many more tax concepts related to salary, house property, capital gains, and income from other sources. If a person is supplying goods and services, he/she will have to pay GST to the government. GST laws are completely different from income tax laws. So, we can't expect students to study all these at elementary school level. They can study these at a higher level. Even ChatGPT and Google are not able to solve the tax related numerical questions of CA final level exam😂.
