This was a great video to watch and very informative. It's super to hear the two models played side by side by Corrado. I recently purchased the cocobolo Protege and absolutely love the rich sound and ease of play. It is a fine instrument.

I tried an Alpha some years ago. While I thought it sounded good, I recall that one of the notes was so stuffy that I could never use the instrument. I think it was the C#/G#, if I recall correctly. Perhaps it was just the one instrument and not the basic design, but it discouraged me from investigating further. Also, there was an issue with the bridge mechanism of the instrument I received (from another dealer, not directly from Backun), which I think was just a manufacturing defect, not a design flaw (which I would not expect from Backun).

@@backunmusical , I remember now. On the Alpha I tried, when the side e-flat/b-flat lever was depressed, it rested directly on the bridge mechanism, rather than on the nearby post, like every other clarinet I have used does. I would assume this was a manufacturing error, rather than part of the design, but I have only tried one copy of the instrument. Going to try another copy of the Alpha and hope I have better luck with that, since I have heard many good things about it.

@@backunmusical , so, I tried another one and love it. It will be a very nice back-up and alternative to my R-13s for outdoor playing. One minor complaint about the Alpha: the tenon corks are too stiff and the bottom socket of the Alpha barrel seems too large, relative to other barrels, including wooden Backuns. I cracked my wooden Backun barrel (which fits fine on other clarinets) trying to get it on the Alpha, and I used plenty of cork grease. And I can't get a synthetic Charles Bay barrel on the Alpha either. I won't dare try any of my other wooden barrels on it until I have that tenon cork fixed, which could mean that the Alpha barrel will then not fit securely.
