- In 2002 a crazy chess match took place in Moscow, Russia. On one team we saw the best russian players - on the opposing team we saw the best players from... The rest of the world! Yes Russia really did play a match against the entire world. In fact USSR had done so on two previous occasions in 1970 and 1984 and won both. But in 2002 the story was a little different. The Soviet Union had collapsed and many players from ex-soviet countries were playing for the "world team". This included the Hungarian star Judit Polgar, who defeated the reigning world number 1 Garry Kasparov in their game. This was a historical moment not only because it helped the world team on to victory, but even more so because it was the first time a woman had ever defeated number 1. Indeed it was widely believed (almost universally accepted) that such a thing was simply impossible. Unthinkable! But Judit did it anyway. This video is not meant to imply that Judit is an overall better chessplayer than Garry Kasparov. Their individual score is extremely one-sided at +12-1=4 for Kasparov. In fact Kasparov has an overwhelming score against everyone and is widely considered to be the best chessplayer of all time (although he may yet be surpassed by Magnus Carlsen if the latter can hold his current form for about another decade). The point of the video is to show that Judit did what nobody thought could be done. I hope that girls and women watching this will understand that chess is absolutely not a "man's game" and that there is no reason why they shouldn't share the beauty and excitement that can be found on the 64 squares. I also hope to cast some light on Judit and her many, many achievements.
Judit Polgár (born 23 July 1976) is a Hungarian chess player. She is generally considered the strongest female chess player of all time. In 1991, Polgár achieved the title of Grandmaster at the age of 15 years and 4 months, at the time the youngest to have done so, breaking the record previously held by former World Champion Bobby Fischer. She was the youngest player ever to break into the FIDE top 100 players rating list, ranking No. 55 in the January 1989 rating list, at the age of 12. She is the only woman to be a serious candidate for the World Chess Championship, in which she participated in 2005; she had previously participated in large, 100+ player knockout tournaments for the world championship. She is also the only woman to have surpassed 2700 Elo, reaching a peak world ranking of No. 8 in 2004 and peak rating of 2735 in 2005.She is the only woman to be ranked in the top ten of all chess players, first reaching that ranking in 1996. She was the No. 1 rated woman in the world from January 1989 until her retirement on 13 August 2014.
She has won or shared first in the chess tournaments of Hastings 1993, Madrid 1994, León 1996, U.S. Open 1998, Hoogeveen 1999, Sigeman & Co 2000, Japfa 2000, and the Najdorf Memorial 2000.
Polgár is the only woman to have won a game against a reigning world number one player, and has defeated eleven current or former world champions in either rapid or classical chess: Magnus Carlsen, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Vasily Smyslov, Veselin Topalov, Viswanathan Anand, Ruslan Ponomariov, Alexander Khalifman, and Rustam Kasimdzhanov.

I don't understand why chess would be divided into mens and womens divisions it's not a physical contest...
there are no men's divisions. There are women's division and open divisions where everybody can participate. Women have tournaments and titles that only they can win. Women's world championship, women grand master etc. This is because FIDE (the international chess federation) wants to encourage girls and women to play and give them places where they feel safe and welcomed. The idea is controversial. Judit Polgar is strongly opposed to such events and titles and never participated in them. She didn't want to be good "for a woman" - she wanted to be GOOD. And she became good. A legend actually. She says that women's titles and events sets the bar too low and therefore does not push female players to reach their potential.
If there was no women division, the only hope for a woman would be to overcome a very misogynistic, men dominated, environnement. With women division, women have more visibility, and have a safe space where they can express themselves before trying the more legit competition.
Those women divisions are not meant to be eternal but are necessary to change the chess world.
@@zikilemini2 yes that is the argument for them and it is a valid and interesting argument. However Judit Polgar's argument that there is no reason becoming a world class chessplayer when you can win the women's world championship and 300.000 usd by being number 363 in the world (Ju Wenjun) is also worth considering. Saying that girls and women *need* a special safe place implies that they are not smart enough and not strong enough to compete outside of the safe space and it can be argued that this traps them in a second-tier mindset. I don't claim to have the answer, but I think it is a very interesting and important discussion. I think the world would benefit greatly from a female classical world chess champion.

The way you seemlesly weave lore/history and the moves played in the game is absolutly amazing. I have no idea wether you follow a strict script or not but i am really enjoying it.
no script at all I just rely on whatever knowledge I have gathered throughout my years of being a massive chess nerd lol. I did a script for "The Chess Move that Made World History" but I don't know if it made much of a difference.

Judit gave a wonderful interview about this game a few years ago to the BBC, there’s some great footage of the match itself and the resignation by Kasparov.
Kasparov’s body language is very shaky throughout as he clocks onto the fact Judit’s absolutely hammering him!

I don’t know if this was a mistake but you said the 4th move in the video was knight to f6 instead of c6, not being picky, just saying if you want to go back and fix that.
Can someone explain why at 2:29 white didn’t play bishop g5? I know these games are from people 50x more skilled at chess than me but it seems like a solid attack idea that is hard to stop (black queen takes white queen, rook recaptures threatening mate unless the knight or bishop blocks) since the bishop is protected by the knight.
If you play it that way, you don't force the opponents king to recapture. Forcing the king to move means it can't castle, which takes a strong defensive move away from Kasparov.
In your line, after the queen exchange black plays bishop e7, and then is free to castle, and the king is totally out of danger.
Purvix is exactly right.
You made a big mistake here : you didn't finished your calculations. After Bg5, Qxd1, Rxd1 threatening mate, it seems scary but not because Be7 blocks the threat, and black is even better because now he can castle and he still has the bishop pair (but maybe it's equal because his majority on the queen side isn't great because of the c double pawns). So, when you calculate, you always have to look how your opponent can block the threat, and evaluate or continue to calculate. Good luck in your way to progress in chess ;)

I am not meaning to be rude when I say this, but i will say it just to inform you, and not to criticise, but you sometimes get the squares wrong and say, for example, knight to f6 instead of knight to c6. the only real reason why I mention this is because i sometimes fall asleep to your videos, and i sometimes like to imagine the board in my head without looking at the screen. otherwise (and not otherwise) i think your work is absolutely amazing. thank you for reading this, if you did

Excellent pronunciation of the names László and Judit. (However in the first half of the video you had pronounced Judit's name correctly but in the 2nd half you, for some reason changed it to the bad format.) There is a little help from me:

Focus on the first sound of these words.
Using those sounds we get 2 diffenert types of names:
1, Judit
2, Dzsudit
Obviously the first one is the correct one due to the fact that the second one is a non existing name.
