I’m glad you did this because I too am a solo diver most of the time. For me it comes down to three basic things:
    1. I like to be alone doing this because it’s peaceful
    2. At the end of the day, you need to be self reliant
    3. There is something to be said for honing your process, routine, and skills without others around like you mentioned.

Totally agree, love the calm, the tunnel of concentration, sometimes feels like a little adventure.
To find a matching divebuddy is indeed a challenging issue.
Most of them are „torpedos „ or quickly bored, especially in our lakes

I find most dive buddies not to be 100% dive buddies.
And if it’s not 100% then you can’t rely 100%.
I definitely don’t rely on anyone because of this observation.
And your videos over the years have sharpened my training for improved self-reliance.
Just the simple advice to be able to reach the tank valve by yourself with the tank on the back.
Or the spiral of death exercises like breathing directly off a tank valve.
I’d like to add that I started Freedive training for the same reason. Being able to control the urge to breath and doing breathholds of 5 minutes and more is a huge self-reliance safety factor.
    Keep it up, Achim.
Topic: how to get a dive mask to not leak each and every time. Or how you minimise air loss when diving with a rebreather.

Like your content a lot, but found it unfair to knock your ex buddy for quitting as he now has a child/family. I think that is a very valid reason for reducing risk. All the best.

I 110% understand where you are coming from. Yes, it snatches your skills because its only you and you have to really be aware of your checks and planning. Making sure you are self-reliant because- you have to be with no partner. It's easy to get lazy when you think that you will have someone who will help you if you run into trouble. The converse of that is that I haven't been able to find people to dive with my level either. And some people I've met when tech diving, I've never wanted to dive with again. The problem is that it's difficult to find places to dive alone- at least I have found it to be that way. Right now, I would rather dive alone until I find someone whom I enjoy diving with who is a real partner. As I said 110% with you. Have always loved your content!

I Love that you Shared this video, since my return from living and Diving abroad, I have found it hard to get back into the sport, every time I have called Dives because of stupid things, or failures like drysuit etc, Now the Past few dives have got better for me again, I used to Dive lots in Australia Alone, cos my buddies couldn't be there, but lately I am Loving the sport again and plan on doing LOTS of Practice dives this winter and Spring in a cold quarry on my own , cos I don't have my CCR Buddies here back home with me, and its true, I think you are more aware when alone, cos you got to be.... Keeps me feeling alive, My equipment ( MEGALODON ECCR ) is fully upgraded, just got my new SF TECH TNT PRO Dry, I'm good to go. Got Christian Massad later next year for re- training in Lanzarote, what's not to love....

Constant solo diver, partly because I lack like minded, partly because I dive oxy- and rebreather and it is hard to find a buddy that would fit the equippent preferences. I am fully with you with all you say! Keep the vidwos going and share your experience with us. All the Best Markus

Thanks for the video. I like solo diving as well and do it most of the time. And I really don't get that discussion about it. I would say almost everybody who is not able to dive self reliant and in a secure way alone is as well not able to be a reliant buddy. Actually, I dive alone since my 5th dive, after the 4th for the certification for OWD. I had no one to dive with and could decide between diving very seldom (with someone together) or diving alone. So I read and watched all stuff that I could find on diving alone an followed the advice of those who did it for themselves. And I'm happy I decided that way.

I've got this year a solo brevet from VDHT, bought a stage and feel me very well on solo diving now. I still have a permanent buddy, but enjoy solo dives for filming und relaxing. It's fine to solo dive as long you're prepared and use your brain. No matter the popular opinions on this topic ;)

  • @jonbradley4044
    @jonbradley4044 Před 4 měsíci

Solo diving is a mindset and only a small percentage of divers can do it safely.
I know people that proudly talk about diving alone in a standard recreational setup with no redundancy and no actual dive plan in terms of bottom time and reserve pressures etc.
I would never wish harm upon these people but it just blows me away the level of complacency and over confidence some people have.

so i totally agree with you. I am a solo diver and like you i don't have any friends 😂. More seriously i share the same opinion as you . solo diver you are more aware of your surroundings.the pace of the dive is much more slower also i found. You plan you dive and dive your plan.

I totally get it. I just got my self reliant qualifications. I don’t mind dive with others but the schedule/ skill set doesn’t always match. I share my planning with the necessary personnel and take the redundant equipment, I also enjoy the alone time and stay within my limits.

That was my problem for many years mate. young in a small greek island with no actual dive buddy, no real pro diving center to learn about gases etc..when at least you get confident about mixing gases you need tools experience etc now i can say on my 40s i can do it on my own..

Usually the more experienced you are and the more challenging are your dives this is what happens people get scared and I respect that, also if you’re the guy behind a camera who also is doing a challenging dive is another good reason you add another layer of equipment and conditions that you have to deal or have someone that understands how you dive is planed… I see nothing wrong with any technical diver with good experience to dive alone anyway at that level of diving you are self reliant and you are diving alone for multiple reasons.

when i go on holidays in the carribean i'm always assigned a dive buddy on the boat before the dive. i call it a carribean dive buddy i just figure i'm diving with the group and try to keep an eye on the person depending on there experience i have over 350 dives.
while at home i dive in a 20ft deep 3mtrs pond by myself to practice my skills. being retired i had a hard time finding someone to dive with during the week days. i bring fish food and feed the bass and sunfish. more people have died swimming the same pond.

I dive in Denmark regular alone but more on the rather easy ones. I often test out camera stuff and go when I have a break in work. I really enjoy to hang around a pillar for 20-30minutes as well. Most partners here want to make meters, not sure why :)
For hard current dives I minimum want somebody know that I'm diving and preferable be outside. Diving in current with a partner is rather stressful when you have 3m visibility. But when you miss one exit and you are 500m away from your car it is great to get picked up :)

This is a rather controversial topic. There are a lot of very well known and considered very good divers that dive mostly alone. Especially when they do the hardest dives. Things like body recovery and etc when you look at Edd Sorenson. We have plenty of stories of traces of struggle between the two victims in caves. How do I know for example that the guy will not panic and make some dumb decision down there? Arguably, in some situation it is safer to be alone than with an inadequate buddy. Or am I wrong?
This topic is huge, and Achim can probably say more on it. I would love another video.

While it's not the "law" but SSI training dictates that I need two of everything. I don't enjoy carrying two of everything ... alone I don't mind being your dive partner but I'm in NZ and my dive skills aren't great (you need to invest quite a lot of time with me) but we have Pearse Resurgence 😅
Otherwise, amazing videos. I love gathering knowledge in CZcams, honing my diving skills one step at a time -- Your channel is one of them.
As to questions, I really struggle in perfecting frog kick. While I can do them, they're just not as perfect as I want them to be. Any tips? Thank you.
