I got into sewing when my daughter was a baby. I saw a beautiful Christening gown in a shop but couldn’t afford it. After lusting after it for a while I decided I could make one, after all it was a simple smock in a fancy fabric. My mum used to sew & I remember helping her sew by turning the handle on her black Singer machine & being convinced I’d helped make whatever item she was making. Anyways I bought a pattern & some satin lace material & set about making the Christening gown, it turned out pretty well (I’ve still got it & my daughter is nearly 30). Like you it’s my happy place where I can zone out of the troubles of the world. I’m a nurse & as you know the last couple of years have been particularly challenging for everyone. I decided I’d had enough after 38 years & toyed with the idea of retirement. I bought my self a fancy new all singing & dancing machine & promptly filled out the relevant paperwork. Now I stay home with Jenny the Janome making clothes for myself & I love it. I think sewing should be on prescription.
    Apologies for the essay 😀

I learned to sew because it makes me happy!!! I live in the states and I spent a lot of money on custom made clothing. Like you, my body shape doesn’t always do well with store bought clothes!!! I am still leaning but I love it!! It keeps me stressed free!!

I took a class in middle school many many moons ago and loved it. However I didn’t continue pass that class experience until many more moons have passed. Now I’m 63 years and learning to sew. I love the way I feel wearing something I made for myself. It brings me so much joy and pride. I’m learning something new every time I start a project. Sewing is an expensive hobby. I don’t sew to save money because likely with the labor and materials needed in order to complete projects it is cheaper (money wise) to buy ready to wear. However the joy and happiness I get out of it is priceless!

Juliet it is so lovely to hear you share your story about sewing and you are right. We know it is an expensive hobby to most of us but it is the joy of the finished garment which I adore so so much.
I am a retired Head Chef with so much skills especially my hands. They are the tools to allow me to sew knit and crochet I enjoy the begin middle and end it gave me a purpose to allow my skills from using my hands to cook for a variety of high profile customers to craft. I love that I can wear what I want that suits me and my family. It is a Joy to make anything from old to new. I more to add but I will leave it for now. Stay blessed always Juliet and your family XXX

I started out watching my mother do alterations to her and kids’ clothes on an old treadle machine - I loved pumping the treadle 😀 When I took a short-run home-ec class early in middle or high school, my dad took me to buy my own sewing machine, an experience I treasure. I sewed a few things early in my marriage (trying to save money), which still blows my mind now that I did - PLAID long sleeve shirt and a TAILORED blazer! I abandoned the skill when I got too busy with full time work and other activities, which, now, I am a bit sad that I neglected. However, I took the hobby up again about seven years ago when looking for some activity to be creative in. I determined then that I would make the type of clothing that I like to wear, not what might be trending: knit shirts and jeans…. I was afraid of sewing knits at first (no longer), and after watching YOUR video making jeans recently, I made a pair for my husband and am about to finish my own now. 😄 I have an alteration I need to take in the back waist of my finished back waistband (otherwise good fit), so I am here now watching your video to relax my frustration and get re-inspired. I have to unpick and redo - one of the tasks I am not so patient about, but I am learning. I keep sewing to wear my own creations but also because of the CZcams community. No one else close to me sews. Thank you!

Im 71 now and as a small child my mum used to buy bits if fabric from the market stall. She didnt buy it often for me because she was quite mean really. Anyway these bit of fabric were very small. Just the right size for my dolls clothes. So I made clothes for my dolls.
I was given a toy sewing machine which I loved.
From then it was a very slow progression to making my own clothes. I remember I made a dress for work when I was 17yrs old. All sewn by hand.
I made a lot of my childrens clothes because in those days it was cheaper to make your own.
Now Im older I make time to sew in between housework, looking after our 2 german shepherd dogs and diy.
    I just love sewing

My mother used to sew, and a few years later I got the bug I have made clothes for all 3 of my children when they were little. Then some years later my son married and gave me my first grandchild I have sewn him a few items and i have altered a few things for my daughter in law too. I don't sew so much these days but still have my sewing machine and now and then I will buy some materials and make something. I follow you and you sometimes you give me inspiration.

My aunt studied fashion and she would make me the coolest dresses when I was a kid and my mum's best friend used to make the costumes for the local theatre productions and I was just so in awe with what they created, so I always wanted to do that. But it was actually my stepdad who showed me how to sew because he used to alter my step brothers' clothes when they were growing up and he still had his sewing machine. I used his for some years and he gave me my current sewing machine as a birthday present, which is such a good, high quality machine I always feel as if I'm using about 10% of what the machine is actually capable of 😂
I love that I can make clothes that fit me that I would not be able to find in stores.
Right now I'm working on a little bright yellow jacket with notched collar to wear in spring/fall. Right now what with all those pastels in shops, I'd never find one a colour or a fabric like that.
My next big project after that will be pants. I've never sewed pants so I'm reasonably intimidated.
Also fixing/altering clothes is an unexpected benefit. It's really relaxing in a mindless sort of way to sit on the couch and unpick seams while watching Netflix 😂

I am able to alter , but use it rarely , and cut , but when I start a new project a simple top , the enthusiasm I had while buying fabric and cutting is lost in the middle and I again need to find my motivation again. It’s the consistency in the motivation that I am missing lately. I made three tops from
Scratch with out pattern and altered added sleeves to store bought tops.

I learned how to sew in school and my mother made a lot of my clothes as well. When I was single and on my own I bought myself a very simple machine so I could mend and do minor repairs on my clothes. As I got more into my machine I realized that I wanted to take some classes and expand my knowledge and skills. I made my clothes when I was pregnant and even made a cover for my bassinet without a pattern!!! When my children were little I sewed them outfits for Halloween etc. As time has progressed I haven’t sewed much . Now that I am retired I want to get back into making some things for my grandsons. It is definitely relaxing!!!

Wow, I learnt to sew by watching my mother, aunties and sister sewing firstly. The desire grew as back in the day we were taught in primary and secondary schools. My sister took me on leaps and bounds, I made pillow cases curtains, clothes for my doll, then myself, blouses, dresses, skirt suits, long lined jackets, I made dresses and a hat for my mum and now I'm trying my hand at trousers and jeans. Yesteryear mindfulness was being calm after a full day of alsorts, changing the speed of your day and just doing for you. It was a lot of things too numerous to mention and taught you patience and perseverance to the end of a project. Welcome to old schools world, come and play.

My Grandmother gave me her brand new sewing machine. I'm a size 12 with a 34K bust. Virtually impossible finding clothes with a good fit. I doubt I will sew whole outfits from scratch. Most likely just alterations. I've made amazing pieces by just sewing trim to my existing clothes.

I sewed my very first garment, a maternity shirt dress, 33 years ago but the sewing machine I bought was a nightmare to use so I never sewed anything else until the first lockdown. I had bought a new sewing machine with my Christmas money but hadn’t really used it. I really wanted to sew t-shirts for myself and my husband as we are both really long in the back and I was so sick of everything shrinking in the wash. I was constantly having to buy new t-shirts and sweatshirts, it was costing a fortune 🤷‍♀️ Not any more though ☝🏻😃

I loved sewing as a kid. My papa even bought me fabric to sew clothes for my dolls. Fast forward to the present decade. I decided to really get serious about it by buying a sewing machine and registering for an introductory sewing course. I find modern fashion kind of awful. Dresses are getting shorter and shorter. They uncover more than they cover. So I told myself it is high time I took my hobby seriously so as to be able to sew clothes that i will like and that will abide by a certain decent but not frumpy standard

See… the thing is that darts vary from body part and position. The dart at the side bust would measure different to the waist dart for a skirt. But generally, I have them around 5 inches long.
