At the same time, NYC was around 11am on the 10th of august. When I arrived at NYC after 16hours of flight, it was around 8pm on the 10th of August which gave me 4 hours of counting down to my second birthday for the year. Lol. I believe that many of us think of the American Old West as being a long time ago. I also think that the perception of the era of the most famous gangsters and bank robbers is that it was much more recent. However, Wyatt Earp died at the age of 80 in 1926 - when Clyde Barrow (of Bonnie and Clyde fame) was 19 (Barrow turned 20 just a little over two months after Earp's death.) Further, Earp is said to have been an unpaid consultant on some of the early silent Western films. Further, Earp knew John Ford (director of such films as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and other movies starring John Wayne), was friends with Jack London and met Charlie Chaplin.

    Unfortunately upon arriving in Honolulu the baby died in a car accident at 1pm on the 31 December 2017.

    Funnily enough, the American-focussed stuff didn't change my perception about time.
    There's a pub in my town that's been around since before the discovery of the entire continent. And it's a pretty decent pub.

    • @ShiftyMcGoggles
      @ShiftyMcGoggles Před 6 lety +6

      America was discovered by Columbus in 1492. The pub has been there since the 1480's, and the main framework of said pub hasn't had to be replaced since it was initially built. Assuming 1492 is the 'start' of the USA , it's barely past 500 years old.
      Also, I'm from Britain. We've been around as an independent nation since the Romans left around 400AD. So, 1618 years ago.

      ShiftyMcGoggles When the Romans left England was by no means a single country. They were unified much later. Besides the modern England was really born after the Norman invasion of 1066.

      True, but it does still put into perspective how short a time it's been since Centurions were parading around the UK in the name of Rome. A flash in the pan in the grand scheme of things.

      ShiftyMcGoggles oh ok thank you for clarifying cause I'm in the US and had to assume you meant another country besides US (where the pub was located in mean ) but that's a cool tidbit of info. I love learning new info like that , it's always interesting, atleast to me, to find things out like that. it always fascinates me honestly. thanks again

    The one thing that probably skews peoples perception of time when it comes to Anne Frank and MLK Jr is that MLK junior lived to be older (ie. lived longer) so that's why it's possibly hard for people to realize these two were born in the same year, and only did MLK become famous for his movements later on in life, after Anne Frank died but had both lived to be the same age, this woulidn't have stumped people as much. Because we perceive Anne Frank for who she was... a young girl who died at age 16 during the Holocaust, but wee see MLK Jr differently, as an "older" person who didn't die until he was 39.
