- The wonderful clarity of BJR presents the fantastic Koln Sonnambula - the diminuendo on the E flat int the finale is to die for! Again, some faint pops and clicks remain.

I have been listening to this recording for a very long time---at least 30 years and each time I return to it the genius of Maria shines forth anew. The tone and colors in the voice are like a palette employed by an impressionist artist. I believe this is what Bellini intended and it is what Maria has left us as her legacy.
Mille sfumature, mille vibrazioni dell'animo, riesce ogni volta a commuoverti!
You know, my friends. Maria knew this music like Moses knew God. I listened to about 12 "modern" sopranos sing Care compagne, the duets and "Ah non credea/ah non giunge. They just don't have a clue as to how to create a true Bellini legato - diametrically opposed to Donizetti and Verdi, full of agitato and sfogature. This is the most difficult opera to sing next to Norma, and Maria is the best, and probably always will be.
Jesus i wish i knew as much as you do about opera.
!!!!!!!!!!
well stated. No one does it like Callas. I, too, have listened to countless sopranos in this role. There's simply no comparison.
Eglise Gutierrez is the closest of the current crop of sopranos to Callas's way of singing this music. She's a throwback to the 19th century as well, rather than the too Mozartian way one often hears this music sung nowadays.
I like your comment, but can't accept the "like Moses knew God" simile. I believe the scholarly consensus now is that there was no Moses, outside of legend. Nor, to my way of thinking, has there ever been a god. That's a side issue, though. Callas was incredible.
Votto was great often underrated and forgotten!
She's unique. The only one who makes me cry.
John Ardoin, who wrote the definitive book on the Callas recordings, The Callas Legacy, wrote that “the Cologne Sonnambula was a mythic night in her career where voice, intent, and technique were in miraculous balance...The only other consistent examples of such complete unity of expression and will from Callas are her live performances of Lucia from Berlin and Medea in Dallas. These, plus the Sonnambula, form the ultimate testimony to the greatness of Callas.”
Perhaps THE most magical live rendition of Amina by Callas. And Votto's conducting is exemplary, in the purest belcanto tradition, with a reading extremely faithful to the score. One of BJR's luxurious and sadly missed présentations! That was certainly the Divina's last "good year".
I think she had lots of great performances in 1958 too! I'd say 58 was her last "good year" and I always consider 1959 the last year of her "real career"
@@hodgrix so true. Quite a few legendary performances to come between '58-'60 (the Traviatas, Medeas, Verdi Heroines 2, the studio Norma, a few live concerts on video). Many also enjoy the later Carmen recording, though it's not one of my favorites
@@rossmerchant8435 I like the ‘58 Traviatas, the Medea, some of the Paris Concert, the ‘59 Pirata, and the ‘59 concert in Hamburg still shows her in tip top musical shape/fluency when compared to the ‘62 one. Personally not a huge fan of the ‘60 Norma or the later Carmen
I’m in tears, she was the Glory, in the concertati she was heartbreaking….
Voz e presença tivemos e temos muitas.
Callas is wonderful here in a role not often associated with her. The cast here seems identical to the studio recording made around this time.
Callas singing of AH, NON CREDEA MIRATI is along with Muzio perhaps the most moving rendition of this piece that I have ever experienced.
Zaccaria a very fine bass sings an exemplary VI RAVVISO of comparable quality to the studio recording. Regarding the tenor Monti, who recorded this role twice in the studio, I am less pleased. He, in my view, is adequate but not up to the standard set here by his colleagues. At this time there seemed to be few who could cope with Elvino’s music as there were later on. Singers like Gedda & Ugo Benelli, for this role, were yet to be heard.
What a great performance. Unmatched...
D' un pensiero e d'un accento. It melts the heart, tugs at the strings of your heart. John Ardoin's book 'The Callas Legacy' says it all. I cannot improve on his critique.
I own ALL of the EMI CD's. The sound in your uploads are vastly superior. I'm enjoying every single one of them. Thank you for such amazing labor of love.

Some parts must have been cut: the scene where the chorus explains what it is that haunts the village ("A fosco cielo, a notte bruna", act 1) is missing, which causes the point of the whole opera to be lost. I have checked other videos of this performance on CZcams and they do have that scene.
Stunning interpretation anyway.
BELLEZA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fav Bellini opera with happy ending from my fav La Divina in superlative voice
wonderful gift! thank you sooooo much
Thank you.....
Grazie mille!!! MERAVIGLIOSO!!!
The note with the diminuendo is actually an E natural, play it on the piano or use a pitch finder and it becomes obvious. This is one of the greatest recordings in opera history. Brava Maria Callas the Greek goddess!
i did with a piano and it's an E flat...
You just have to look at the score to see it cannot possibly be an E-natural. It's an E-flat on my piano as well.
Manoli S. High E flat!
The Great Master Bellini wrote some of the most beautiful music in Opera. Enough said per usual. Yes and it's an E natural to be sure my friend and you are how old ? When you make this comment??? 🇫🇷🤔 Arnold

Brilliant. Thank you so much for this.
Foi pena Bellini ter morrido jovem. Mas Deus enviou outros.
Thank you so much for posting!
commento di !mrdunn brucvald "Cossotto is bad in her aria di sortita”. Please, what is her aria di sortita?
wher'is bad cossotto?
"Maria Callas soprano leggero"... sicuro, signore?

Thanks again for posting! Oh and will you marry me? Ktnxbai
1955 live with Bernstein much, much better, especially "Care compagne, teneri amici". But Callas always good even when she is bad. :-)
+Pe Callahan As far as I now, the duetto in the Bernstein recording follows the original score. The roles are changed here, probably because the passages are too high for Monti. Valletti is the much better Elvino, but Callas is unsurpassed in this Cologne recording.
Cossotto is bad (read 'rough') in her aria di sortita. Not technically up to this bel canto writing at all.
She's a great singer in many other ways, though.
I completly agree with you, she seems singing a verismo Opera !!! Too much "sfogato" and too much theatrical interpration....
Yet Callas transcends her vocal limitations to create great art.
But Monti is also beautifully apposite here. Tenors should note that the long, long melancholy diminuendo
on the word 'padre' in his entrance recitative---as if becoming especially emotional
thinking of his late father---as divine Bellini singing.....
That's a shame. I always liked Cossotto. I will go back and listen to her on this recording. I think every time I've heard it I've concentrated on Callas and Monti.
