RuneScape was starting off the year with a bang. The wilderness was being transformed into a safe area with the removal of PVP, and trade was being severely restricted making it nearly impossible to transfer any wealth between players. Jagex’s official reason, that it was a last ditch effort to defeat botting software and stop players from buying gold using real money. But was it really?

@Nope Nope Hey thanks for the comment! Sorry to hear you dislike the sponsor but I did quite a bit of research before taking the sponsorship. As with all medications there can be side effects. From what I remember the FDA said that it’s very rare with finasteride. I’ve used their products before and have never had any issues. I watched unbiased reviews, looked in to what the FDA said, and watched sponsorships from other much larger creators like H3 and Phillip DeFranco. I would never want to mislead my community or put their health at risk. :)

@John Hancock I appreciate the concern but from what I’ve seen this stuff works for most people. It doesn’t work for everyone, and isn’t meant to reverse baldness, just keep what you already have. I watched and read plenty of unbiased, unpaid for reviews about it.

It was such a downfall. They should have looked for other more simple ways to prevent bot accounts from purchasing membership.
For example, email verification, max one account creation per day/week, quest point or total level requirement for new players who want to subscribe with certain payment methods.

@@hughmungus19 don't quote me but wasn't Runescape in like 2007 hitting 200k+ players online consitently. I remember a shit load of worlds would be maxed out at 2k players. Even now combined Runescapes only hit like 160kish at the absolute peak.

Funnily enough, I started playing just in 2009. So I never experienced the wildernes as it was and is now. But nevertheless it wasn't boring for me. There were regular, self-organized revenant hunts that started in the GE and were a ton of fun as a f2p account. The clan-wars and safe pvp was also still pretty frequently visited.
Only after ~2010 these features were rarely used anymore and abandoned, alongside minigames such as fist of guthix. And even more so after the wildernes came back and all of these things were literaly hid in a dirt cave near falador.
It's stuff like this that has slowly eroded player's trust in Jagex over the years. It another cataclysmic update was to happen to RuneScape, I have serious doubts that Jagex would be upfront and honest with the players. I still feel that they sacrifice fun for profits when I see things like unnecessarily grindy or tedious Yak Trak challenges, weekly TH promotions, and an overall feeling that microtransaction content gets more dev time than actual gameplay in the main game.
considering the 'main game' has less active players than OSRS, I don't think you should call it that. But yeah, it feels like the passionate jmods switched to OSRS and the money grabbers/graph guys sticked to rs3.
Meanwhile I never PK'd ever so I didn't care and just happily kept training slayer and questing.
EoC ruined it for me though.
They fixed runescape 3 so much even "A friend" and many other osrs players love it now
Yea the eoc was crazy one of the biggest mistakes a mmo can make is changing the combat system even if the combat system is "better" it turn's the game into a different game causing most players to quit.
Rs had 3 game killing updates. Biggest being removal of wilderness, then mtx then eoc.

Wow, the part about the revenants popping up in the wild on a timer brought me down memory lane. I remember being a noob in the wildy and those things absolutely wrecking me.
That and the chaos elemental. Shit was horrifying
I actually said fuck it after the whole “anti bottling” update and started botting myself. Not for money or anything, I really just didn’t enjoy the game outside of PVP and I didn’t want to grind stats myself to go participate in the gang war that was BH where I’d loose more than I gained. I quit soon after and got into private servers. Now days I don’t bot anymore, when they brought back free trade and Wildy it was well worth it again to play the actual game.
Same here. I ended up catching a 48 hour ban just before the release of rs3 then never botted again

I've never botted myself, but if i ever get wrongfully banned, or jagex pull this sort of thing again i'm going to learn how to bot until i get back every single gp that's lost.
It sucks having the feeling in the back of your mind playing a game ran by a developer with an incredibly shady past, and somewhat shady present. Osrs is a great game despite the company though

I don't really have a problem if someone is just botting skilling skills and not farming gold or bosses. This is like my 3rd or 4th main I've had to restart so excuse me if I don't wanna put 1000 hours back into shit I've done already. Like I maxed strength 100% on my own again this time but then I said fuck it and auto clicked 99 mining(took about a month) and 90 mining on a pure/alt soon to be 99 too.

Truthfully if eoc/rs3 released in the state it is now instead of what it was it probably would have done a lot better. No revolution/legacy mode just made combat a chore no matter what
Yea eoc really killed runescape the game was way more popular before eoc they where forced to make osrs because if they did not they would be bankrupt by now almost nobody played rs3.
This was really the beginning of that period of change
No one wanted EOC and they messed up releasing EOC in a very bad state.
Not only they forced something nobody wanted, but they didn't even delivered a good content.
Nowadays EOC works extremely well and I like it
Bizarre they didn't just come clean about the cards. Credit card fraud and a building legal issue is a lot more understandable than how they actually spun it.
Dude thats insane what you said about the CEO from 07-09. I remember the entire start of the game being turned into a corny ass dragon mini quest instead of tutorial island and the entire time it would pop up ads to pay for membership it was so bad. I got sad even thinking about that shitty 2 year transition from 08-2010ish. BUT members content was probably at its peak for me besides no wilderness and the newer graphics sucked

As a pker that played from 2003-now these updates were brutal, we made the most of BH but it was shit, when they announced the return of wilderness and free trade the scenes on teamspeak were immense we all celebrated like we had won the lottery lol I still have the recording its cringe af but very nostalgic.

Before this update, think of Runescape as a healthy person with all their limbs and fully functioning organs.
This update was the metaphorical equivalent to getting hit by a truck, surviving with no legs and having to endure 3 years of rehabilitation, then when you can finally walk, albeit with prosthetic legs, a company called EOC makes electronic legs for you that end up running you in front of another truck.
Before this, the company was a family run business, then after this it wasn't run by the same family anymore.
I love that Colonello gives us real content with evidence and facts instead of just schilling for Jagex like Pugger.
2005-2007 was the GOLDEN AGE of RuneScape.
And that golden age was literally ended by the removal of wilderness pvp

One time I called one of my friends and asked them to call that number you used to be able to call to get a runescape membership charged to your phone provider. They was like 9 and had no clue what it all meant. I was 10 at the time. I imagine many other people used to call the number and charge their parents phone providers too. It's honestly the company's fault for making fraud so easy.

Not at all, they released osrs and there was a new runescape game for people that wanted it, exact opposite of killing the game
@@FABIOof119 they didn’t release OSRS because they wanted to implement EOC; they released OSRS because the backlash from releasing EOC was so great. If 2007scape had not fallen into their laps, RS would mostly be dead in comparison. 30% of the population is on RS3; 70% is OSRS.
I'd be still playing today if I didn't have to ditch my 04 account to play on the true RS game. Just saying

@@FABIOof119 yeah MyPupTobi is right! I remember the time period in between the two. I was so sad to see what they had done to rs3. I had so many high level acc and didn’t want to quit but I hated this new version of the game. For some reason I can’t remember his name but a big CZcamsr at the time (works for jagex now) proposed the idea of a old school rs and the community basically said, we will come back if you make an older version of rs. So nearly a year later, they released OSRS.

I remember being 12 and walking into the Wilderness and a stupid new ghost symbol being on the screen. I called my friend to tell him wilderness pvp had been taken away and he didnt believe me until he logged in and checked himself
I remember this update, I was pking in edgeville on my 42 def range voider. Logged out and back in to this insanity. Instantly logged back out and returned a few months later to play castle wars, after that diet out I was gone. Came back in 2014 and have been playing on and off since

6:10 I actually enjoyed "Rev Hunting" quite a bit. It was when you would intentionally run around with the goal of encountering one of these randomly wandering revs. I made quite a bit of money from the good drops, since not many were doing it.

Damn I remember people gathering around the chaos alter in the wilderness to kill revenants. It was a weird time
Man trade limits were the absolute worst. I had been playing for a few years when that update released but it came out just a few days after I got hacked and lost everything. I had a good friend with a blue phat, 3a and the works who wanted to help out but was so limited. The limit was based on your QP so he was basically like “hey dude use it as a reason to start questing more. Every time we can trade again and are both online I’ll give you your max gp” so I started questing my ass off. Every 15-30 minutes a few times a day I’d meet them at the ge and they’d give me 15-30k whatever the limit was. It was such a pain but if it wasn’t for that dude I probably would have stopped playing after losing everything at such a young age.

I wish jagex would made a memorial day in osrs where the wilderness goes to safe area for one day and players would do a community event like there was in ice mountain if anyone remembers it.

My problem with BH was that it kinda took away the spirit of what made the Wildy fun to begin with, since it was this tiny little cramped crater instead of a massive expanse of the map. I missed the element of surprise, going through the wildy with clanmates and the panic of seeing white dots show up. Revs were a joke too; they hit way above what their CB level should be even if you had BIS gear and once you had a few mil to your name their drops were laughable.
That other comment I saw is true; RS never fully recovered from this. I still have a vivid memory of my nearly-full friend list all being offline just a month or two after this update. IMO this felt like such a half-assed solution to bots at the time considering detection software was a thing even back in 07.

Didn’t EOC happen around 2008 as well? Or 2009? That’s 2 game killing updates within 2-3 years of each other. Honestly, coming out with OSRS and adding more content to it is what saved Jagex from bankruptcy, imo. It’s funny/ironic how players were “bored” of early osrs, and gave Jagex so many opportunities to shut down the game, citing “lack of player interest” as the main reason...but that may have been their first step towards the UK version of filing chapter 11 (bankruptcy), and I think it was people like Ash who called them out on this and actually helped push content development forward.

Sorry, the title (and premise) of your video is false. I was playing Runescape at the time and it was in fact communicated that the stolen credit card issue was the main reason. Throughout the whole video I was thinking: “but what about the stolen credit cards?”, how could I have known that other than from the time I was still playing Runescape?
Best update imo. We all had a healthy bank no staking no fxking gambling and we were all happy and actually enjoying the game.
PKn and free trade is part of the game. I agree DA and gambling rings are bad but pkn what got me in this game and free trade is nice when you got actual friends that are trustworthy

I would argue more that pkn just gotten stale since it is who can get the better rng. I couldn't care about losing some gp bc I am having fun while doing so (just like everything else in life with actual money like going to the movies). The game is for entertainment, not for a living. I find the DA entertaining too but the problem is it does feed gambling addictions and young people don't need that addiction to start at a early age. Only reason I am against the DA.
The this time period is why I ended up leaving, I had been working and going to a trade school at the time after finishing highschool and barely had time to play.
Well apperantly my couputer had gotten numerous pieces of malware on it, I hadn't played in 6 months because I was so busy but never dropped my membership and found out when I went to log in during chirtmas break that my account had gotten stolen and was permantly banned for macroing. Unfortinalty at the time they had no options for customer support other emails forum posts and mods kn Twitter, well the emails went unanswered the forum posts were deleted by mods and Twitter ghosted me too, so years of hard work and 99s were just flushed. I have picked up here and there for nostalgia but always end up walking away again, I have never gotten the sour taste of the customer service experience (or lack there of) out of my mouth.

I believe it took them roughly 4 years to revert changes that destroyed the game for kids, those 4 years most of us wouldn't have had to play past that because we wouldv'e been done given we'd already put in 3 years when the update came out.. think about the timeline, its like 5-7 years to complete this game, yet its been out and released again twice over 15 years... so everyone has had to, at year 7, restart, with rares being worthless, and being 4 years older, not having as much passion for the game, and then play another 8 years to complete the game...
but like, by the time you restarted the "new OSRS", you would have already been onto another game.. a double marketting scam, hey, lets restart it all again, run the game for another 7+ years, a third re-run of this fuckin pixelated scam in disguise
It's a shame they couldn't just put on the sale thing "No refunds" because of them pesky banks. It was like 8 dollars or something and they could have just changed all their info but I get it nobody wants a penny taken from them. Only ever done 2 chargebacks on my card and they were my fault for accidentally purchasing something expensive twice in a row, the one time ive had my bank account compromised it was only like 30$ so i didnt really want to go through a huge process and i just changed my info.

FYI chargebacks are massively expensive.. it’s not like you just refund 11$ or whatever, it might cost them 25$ on top of the $11... just for context.
What people need to u understand, and I get it economics is tricky asf, but as a company, coming out and saying “credit card companies are threatening to no longer do business with us”, even hinting at that, could have literally started a chain reaction that could have tanked jagex as a company. It would make them vulnerable to other hostal takeovers, stock prices could fall, investors would be more hesitant to support the company likewise for advertisers. So yeah they lied about it but they kind of had too
I don’t know if it’s worth making a video on but does anyone remember when jagex graphically updated the gnome scarf and everyone lost their minds? Instead of the back sticking out it was flat (video on my channel) from memory they blamed it on a glitch and changed it back? I want to know why they couldn’t just say sorry we will change it back instead of blaming an item model somehow glitching to perfectly sit on your back lol.

i'd argue eoc killed runescape, at least after this runescape was still playable.
EOC didn't kill RS.
MTX did.
Eoc was so much worse than this update from 2007.
Eoc was an update that changed runescape on how its being played.(a revamp)
Removing wilderniss and trading was an update in an existing runescape that people liked.
Maybe for you, but for a lot of us this is what made RuneScape unplayable.

Interesting, I was already under the impression the update happened because of the credit card fraud. I thought that was what they always had communicated. Apparently my memory of their communication is wrong

I was TERRIFIED of revs when i started in 08. REv goblin or somthing like 2 hit me first time in the wilderness. was so scared of it after that i was like 13
I remember the rev werewolves. They were in a sort of sweet spot where they could target me but I wasn't able to target back because I was too low level. It was rather annoying when they would target you while in the old CW area
During technology class in middle school our teacher gave us a half hour to play whatever games we wanted. I forget why we decided this was a good idea but my friend and I went in the wilderness and got attacked by a rev almost immediately. I ran away but he got stuck and lost his full addy armor. Class was over so he couldn’t get it back in time either LOL.
I died more from the revs than i did to players in the wildy at least you can reason with a human player the revs are just mindless killing machines.
