  • The Music Academy of the West is among the nation’s preeminent summer schools and festivals for gifted young classical musicians. At its ocean-side campus in Santa Barbara, the Academy provides these musicians with the opportunity for advanced study and performance under the guidance of internationally renowned faculty artists, guest conductors, and soloists. Admission to the Academy is strictly merit based, and fellows receive full scholarships (tuition, room, and board). The Academy’s distinguished teaching artists roster has included famed soprano Lotte Lehmann, composers Darius Milhaud and Arnold Schoenberg, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, pianist Jeremy Denk, and current Voice Program Director Marilyn Horne. Academy alumni are members of major symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, ensembles, opera companies, and university and conservatory faculties throughout the world. Many enjoy careers as prominent solo artists. In 2014 the Music Academy entered into a four-year partnership with the New York Philharmonic, resulting in unprecedented training and performance opportunities for Academy fellows, and Summer Festival residencies for Philharmonic musicians.
The Music Academy of the West cultivates discerning, appreciative, and adventurous audiences, presenting more than 200 public events annually, nearly half of them free of charge. These include performances by faculty, visiting artists, and fellows; masterclasses; orchestra and chamber music concerts; and a fully staged opera. For more information, visit musicacademy.org

I love how she makes it about the music and not a competition.

What an incredible masterclass. It's no wonder why all of her students are winning major auditions. Everything is a gem, expressed with clarity and sincerity! Wonderful.

What spectacular coaching!!!!!! So far I've only watched the first trumpeter and each time he got drastically better than the performance before. Awesome coaching! She said little about trumpet technique but the life concepts taught are directly related. Incredible teaching!!!

Thank you Barbara for the crystal clarity of your exposition...
It's one thing to know your stuff.. but to be able to communicate it in that fashion is a joy and a great service to us. Thank you

Lucky you not being a trumpet player! It will definitely ends one's otherwise stress less existence! Check out what Dizzy Gillespie famously said about the trumpet. So true!

@@Herehear49 To me, to play the trumpet, I find it calming and peaceful. That's probably why I've been known to often play for five to six hours in practice. It's the attitude and reason for playing that makes a big difference. I play in service of the Lord, in ministry and worship. And I absolutely love the sound since I was a very young child. I find it a great blessing. I'm not saying it's easy, it's not. But when you work to obtain the clarity and beautiful sound of a trumpet, and you get it, it is such a blessing, a real gift.

My trumpet teacher at UVIC in Canada Louis Ranger taught Barbara Butler many years ago at Aspen, Colorado. I heard many stories about her. I also bought the trumpet comes of age from my trumpet teacher on Vancouver, Island. In 1980 Barbara left UBC because Martin Berinbaum wanted to be king of the trumpet instructor in Vancouver. Someone told me this while I was at the University of Victoria. I know Martin well because I took three lessons from him in 1994. I never forgot what he told me that I will never study with Louis Ranger. He was wrong to say it and made a big mistake. Look where Barbara went and I heard that UBC in Vancouver do not produce nearly the best trumpet players. Most are mediocre. I respect those people who want to succeed. Martin Berinbaum was not one of them. My previous trumpet teacher at Douglas College told me that Charles Geyer met a good wife. They are the trumpet duo and trumpet team. She is very motherly like. I really respect her. Yes my other trumpet teacher Chris Robertson told me she is a good trumpet player.

tooter1able Nope, its to try and keep it as an origional sound as possible and not play it on the pistons which makes it sound like a bear trying to be a ballerina

Instead of asking him to start it again, you might have asked him to tell you how he could have played some sections better ( the ascending passage up to the c, the dynamics, setting preparation, hearing in your head what's coming(sight singing).....As always Ms. Butler has at least one take home...the diaphragm always rises...don't push it out or suck it in....let it collapse upward to expel the air ( a sigh!) Thank you
