How To EASILY Repair Holes In Aluminum

  • How to easily repair "fix" holes or cracks in aluminum sheets, plates, tanks, and pots using a quality aluminum brazing rod like Alumite brand. Using a clean stainless steel brush just before initial brazing is essential for excellent results. Not removing oxidation/corrosion will result in a very poor repair.
    Alumite & Alumaloy brazing rods BOTH work great. Please refer to the link posted below if you're interested in purchasing these rods:

    worked great for me on 1/8" hole in aluminum canoe. I did it in the sun - the aluminum was thin and ambient temp was 70 but the canoe was probably about 100 degrees from the sun. Used yellow propane bottle and the whole project only took about 30 min - including cleaning aluminum, heating and brazing hole, grinding and cleanup. I'm sure with thicker aluminum and/or a bigger hole it will take more time. THANK YOU very much for posting the video!!!!

    I did a similar repair several years ago. I preheat the pot (Magnalite) in the oven to 400*, to minimizing the heat sinking problem. Then I brazed the crack. Once finish I placed it back in the oven and turned it off. Let it cool down over night. Still using the pot to this day.

    That is some serious exacting heat application to pre heat and fill that hole WITHOUT burning thru. And the material seemed to magically fill in. looks like you've had some practice.. Very well done. I have a aluminum water tank in my boat that doesn't leak yet but I want to fill some pitting before it eats thru. Going to try and apply your lesson. Thanks

      Hi Robbie. Just make sure the area is SUPER clean(bright and shiny), and only apply enough heat to get the brazing rod to melt when touched to the aluminum surface. You'll likely need to use a MAPP gas torch. BTW, nice Gag Grouper. I freedive & spearfish. I've blasted some big ones too in the past.

    Could you please tell me how to handle dents in aluminium pots, such as pots for outdoor activity?
    I read the aluminium must be heated as well, so the material can be reshaped. Or is that not needed with thinner aluminium?
    I'm pending between dealing with the dent and the dented bottom or going for a fix. I'm afraid I might weaken the overall material.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 9 lety +1

      maynardcat As long as you clean the area extremely well using a stainless bristle brush, and do not apply too much heat, you will be able to repair the area. As you heat, keep testing the temp of the pot by touching the brazing rod to the pot, when it starts melting, pull back and maintain that level of heat! The initial filler needs to be brushed into the surface when molted before applying the rest of the brazing rod. When cool, file, or grind to shape.

      Part-Time Picker The only problem is you'll need a lot of heat to work on a large, thick area of aluminum......maybe easier to buy a small piece of aluminum plate and rivet it to the boat over the hole with 3M 5200 marine adhesive applied. Fill in the rivets with the 5200 also. If the hole is very small, just wire brush the area really good, wipe down with 91% rubbing alcohol and use only the 5200.

    • @TheLandlordPicker
      @TheLandlordPicker Před 6 lety

      electronicsNmore i use map gas when I am soldering copper pipes do you think that would work? That gets much hotter than propane? Also it only appears to be two pinholes. On the front of each pontoon. Probably from hitting / gliding up on rocks on shore. I actually just thought about drilling the hole a little bit larger and filling them with silicone. It only has to float on top of the water. No pressure really. Any thoughts?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 6 lety

    Seems to me that you could have saved a lot of Propane by placing the large Aluminum pot in a 500 degree oven first to preheat the whole item. Then it won't suck away all your heat so fast. You do the same thing when repairing Cast Iron items to prevent thermal shock. Cast Iron actually needs to be put back in the oven after the repair so it can cool slowly and lessen the chance of it cracking and spoiling your repair job.

      You can repair an aluminum boat hull, but you'll need A LOT of heat to get the job done. Use a MAPP gas torch at very close distance, or an oxy-acetylene torch. If you don't care about looks, you can also take another small plate along with 3M 5200 sealant and rivet it over the area of holes.

      if its for a car engine for what its worth just buy a new sump.
      the last thing you want is a repair failing and then engine seizure that could cost 100's maybe 1000's thats if its not your own life as you dont know when the engine is going to seize. believe me i done it myself at 100mph. and ground to a halt when i was on a race track, i just know what to listen out for.
      if you don't know what your doing. leave it to a qualified mechanic.
      i myself am a HGV mechanic and its not acceptable to be repairing sumps to engines you can ask any GENUINE mechanic the same question and get the same answer.. regardless if its a crack or a hole. its scrap just bin it and buy a new one.

    Will the same technique work for screw holes in a vertical sheet of aluminum? And, if so, can the resulting filled hole be filed or smoothed before painting?

    Thanks for the video,
    I've had some of these rods for twenty years, I was never able to get them to work, I think your video should help, I will probably have to use steel wool on the rods as well, they have kinda turned dark over the years.
    Do you think it will work on cast Aluminum as well, that's what I really need to repair.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  Před 8 lety +1

      You need to drill the ends of each crack using a small drill bit. Doing that prevents the crack from extending further. Also grind a small depression over the entire length of the crack. The repair works great when done PROPERLY. Practice using something similar first.

      Alumite rods can be used for Aluminum alloys, Zinc Diecast, Pot Metal, and White Metal. To braze steel, you would normally use a flux coated bronze brazing rod.
