There is also the Watch for Tesla App for Apple Watch. I love it as you don’t need to pull the phone out and use the shortcuts on the watch face instead.

As many people mentioned before me; you can switch the shortcuts in the app to whatever you like. Doesn’t resolve the issue that you have to geht your phone out to open something, but definitely makes it way nicer
I prefer the Keyfob + mobile phone combo. The keyfob comes in handy when you want to quickly open the frunk or trunk from a distance from the car.
Can you vent the windows with the key fob?

Nice and to the point video Bjorn! I prefer the phone app as well. But always have the key card with me just in case. Not sure if I understood this part right, but opening the trunk while the car is locked also works as long as you have the phone with app with you.

You've convinced me to get the keyfob. The mobile app sometimes fails more than once per week for me and keycard is so clumsy even as a backup.

I think I'd have to go with phone with ABC option. It's the balance between convenience (with card failsafe) and functionality.

Since I have a number of people that drive my car on occasion, the key fob sounds like a really nice accessory to purchase. Particularly since my wife uses the car so infrequently that her app is never active. Thanks for a really thoughtful review.

You can also use the NFC from you smartphone as a key like the keycard( it works only with Android Smartphones ) display have to be on .

Very good review, overview, and comparisons! I've always wondered if I should get the fob since my phone key isn't 100% reliable and your video was very helpful. One good thing about getting the fob is that I can transfer it to the next Tesla I buy or just sell it since it's basically programmable.
It's interesting to see your phone key also not work for you reliably. I've also found that opening the app helps it recognize the phone is nearby but having to do that each time is very problematic. It's gotten to the point where I'm not sure if the car will open for me right away or if I'll need to bring out my phone and open the app.
Also interesting was how the car didn't see the fob right away. I wonder if it's related to the phone key issue.
Which phone do you have?
If you have an iPhone, don't close the app in multitasking.
If you have an android phone, go to phone settings, then to battery and then you need to exclude the Tesla app from the battery optimization (works differently on every phone manufacturer, just search something similar in the settings or Google it for your phone brand) , then the phone key will work flawlessly. After I did this I had no real problems anymore with the phone key.
Also if your phone has NFC, you can use phone like a keycard and lock and unlock the car by touching the b pillar with your phone, even when Bluetooth is turned off. (Only works on Android)
Hi, something I’ve noticed with my iPhone is that if it’s on my rear pocket it won’t open the car. It needs to be on a front pocket or inside a jacket. Didn’t make too much sens trop me, but it actually changes everything if placed “facing” the car.
@@egrebot I really wouldn't recommend having the phone in the rear pocket. It can get stolen from there much more easily and if you sit on your phone, it can damage your phone.
@@BeamDeam Samsung S9+. I've tried going through the different optimization settings and excluding the app but the issue still comes and goes. Sometimes it seems to work very reliably for a while and then it becomes spotty for a while.

I have an older keyfob. It's nice but rarely use it. The older ones do not have passive unlock / walk away lock. I use phone and card as backup.
Also the phone now unlocks with bluetooth off via NFC. Same as bottom of fob. It's pretty cool.
I keep one keycard always set to a "Service/Guest" profile in the lock settings. As soon as they use the card on the pillar, the profile will be ready for them.
I have two Tesla's and use the fob because
1) I don't HAVE to carry my more bulky phone to drive the car
2) If two people use phone key access, the car often gets the current profile wrong
3) If two people have phone key access you both HAVE to remove your phone from the car if you want it to lock ( I often don't )
4) I don't HAVE to carry a more bulky wallet with the key card (though I usually do)
5) The key card on its own is a bit annoying.
6) For me, the phone is not that reliable.
One more observation, if you have more than one Tesla there is no way to tell which card is for which car although I guess you can write on it.
The fob is small, is nicely rounded so it fits nicely in the pocket and is reliable. My unpaired phone or card can act as backup if necessary though having had an X for four years, I have yet to see a fob fail. My girlfriend chooses to use a paired phone though.
When it is raining and you are carrying the groceries, it can be handy to have a keyfob. The app is nice. Regarding the keyfod and the rfid cards, are they linked to a profile, or can you select a different profile/guest account? Just to avoid having the other person you give it to messing around with your settings. I got myself a rfid wallet, so I would always bring the card anyways. Regarding those profiles, if there is a difference in the profile, which device would take priority, the keyfob or the phone? Or would it be what gets detected first?

In thailand we don't have a big selection of EV cars
If you use the Tesla app on an android phone and have problems with the Bluetooth key being unreliable, then go to the phone settings, go to battery settings and exclude the Tesla app from the battery optimization. The app will stay open in the background and the phone won't freeze the app in background to save battery, so the phone key works way more reliable.
Also you can use your android phone like a KeyCard if your phone has NFC. Just hold your phone against the b pillar, like the normal KeyCard and it will unlock/lock the car even if Bluetooth in turned off on your phone.
👍Indeed, Bjørn did not mention the Phone as NFC Key"Card". This works in airplane mode - without Internet and without Bluetooth 👍 If the phone has NFC capabilities.
1° Keyfob , 2nd Tesla app, 3rd Tesla card ....and always bring 2 with you 👌

Good runthrough of options! My old car combined fob and a physical old style key inside the fob. Saved me when the fob battery was flat and the new fob battery was in the car. How to enter a Tesla if ALL batteries are flat? (after a zombie apocalypse perhaps)
bit weird that even with the tesla key fob it seems to hesitate, never had that trouble with my leaf or kia soul with the keyless entry. I wonder why it does it, i'd be interested to know if they could fix that

Hint from me, which I discovered recently only: in the "Locks" screen you can also link a certain key to a certain driver profile, thereby switching profiles automatically when that device opens the car. Tap the little "driver" icon next to a lock.
Isn’t there another keyfob feature while keeping pressed the central button to open the windows?
With the phone you need to take the card also in case your phone battery runs out and therefore your wallet also, but with the fob only one is required as when the fob battery runs out it can still be used by touching it to the pillar in the same manner as the key card.
Wouldn’t you carry your wallet anyways because it contains your license? If not, you can just place you keycard wherever your license is.
I prefer the keyfob. A lot of advantages as I already use it on my Model S
You can still open the boot / trunk etc without the internet connection, the phones bluetooth connection is sufficient the UI is a bit deceiving as it looks like you have to wait for the internet connection with the car

The day I picked up my Tesla, the sales rep helped me set up my phone. I've never used anyhting else since, but I always carry the keycard with me, just in case.
Same as you. I prefer the phone/keycard-combo for the same reasons. Key fob is too bulky for me. I have always either my phone or my wallet with me, so perfect solution…

There is also the rings you can purchase or make yourself by soaking the key card in acetone to remove all the plastic then use it in your own ring
You can enable keyless driving, so the car is drivable whenever it is unlocked. This helps when you have someone else drive your car.
My current car key fob, also glossy black, is paired with a keychain and I prefer it being a bit bulkier so that it stays in the pocket or if it falls, I can hear it.
But yeah, the phone solution would prolly be the best solution for me, because it works seamlessly via bluetooth, on approach.
Also, the buggy unlocking behaviour in the video could be because the car was previously locked using a different device? So if you lock by card, you maybe have to manually unlock by key fob so then it works normally... it's a feature, not a bug? 😁

sorry, I was wrong, those 3rd party stuff are just rubber cases for the key fobs. I guess key fobs have to be official Tesla

Key fob all the way, just to convenience to easily open the trunk/frunk does it for me.
I got the key fob as soon as it was available (UK) it always confuses the service centre as so few do buy it. They always expect it to be an X or S they’re looking for U.K. the car park. If I had a Tesla charger at home I’d probably wouldn’t have got it. On a rainy day the phone is annoying, where as I can blind press the keyfob in my pocket to release the charger. Now I’m awaiting the Model Y, so the power lift gate will give me more reason to use it.
I like all three options as each has its application.
Having said that, neither one is a 'good/safe' method to use while at the beach. It would be nice to have a device like a water proof bracelet for that so you don't have to leave it behind when going swimming - it could eliminate the key card as the main tool. I believe Rivian has something like that for its cars.
Key Fob is handy if you use valet parking too.
A bracelet and/or smart watch NFC support would be amazing. Much more useful than the card IMO.

You mean like the Land Rover activity key? It’s a rubber bracelet and LR has been offering it for years. Great idea.
@@theseb1979 the only problem with a bracelet is that you have to either remember to put it on in specific instances or embrace it as jewelry. I imagine some people wouldn't like the look of it regardless of how it looked. That why I think NFC smart watch compatibility would be awesome, people could choose their own design

I prefer the key fob for everyday use because it's convenient. Don't have to place it anywhere and can use it from some meters away. And the app for preheat etc
You can also touch the key fob to the B pillar and unlock the car like with the key card, even if the key fob battery is dead
mobile has more options and key fob is simple easy to handles in hurry busy time.

Aren’t Apple shortcuts also available? So you could set up a shortcut where you simply ask Siri to open frunk, then it will run the shortcut and open frunk? That way you don’t always need to get your phone out. Unless I’m mistaken

Everybody is talking about not having to worry about the key anymore. However, I would say what do you do with house keys ETC? If you don’t have smart locks, the tesla key fob is a major plus in every way.
Ok, the key fob is good and practically but disproportionately expensive.
Another way to open the car by phone when the Bluetooth is not working is to enable the NFC and use it as a card
Opening with your smartphone's NFC depends on your smartphone. I know some samaungs where is works. I also know Huawei which did not work at alle.

Is the FOB pegged to the car or could you use it with another new Tesla when you sold your own one?
Basically once you have the FOB you'll need to pair it with your car in the car settings and need to touch the keycard (like with the phone). You can remove it from one car and pair it with another one again with no issues.

I am on the same side as you. I carry my phone and mini card wallet everywhere, so yeah, nothing extra to carry with me wins. I am looking for a similar solution for my house door now as well :P
One more “hidden” feature of key fob is that you can use it to do standard summon forwards and back.
Long press the roof of the key to enable summon mode, and then press the front or rear of the model car key to move it forwards or back.
Not allowed in Europe.

as far as i know the phone doesent need a connection to the servers to unlock the car cause it works from phone to car directly (Bloutooth) , but thank you for the key fob "guide" i thinking about buying one
for me the best option is the card. No need to worry with battery.
Doesn't the Tesla app have any options for widgets? You can put the controls on the home screen and not open the app. Skip a step.

I use the Tesla ring and bracelet It is never far from me and super easy to have with you.
Does not the phone use bluetooth? Try disabling the wifi and cellular, and see if it works without internet.

I think it does. Remember there was a story a few months ago about "Tesla has a server outage and owners are locked out of their cars!" - which was rubbish, because people were still able to lock and unlock via a local connection. It would be good to confirm with Bjorn's testing.
Just tested on mine and the car unlocks and drives with the phone in airplane mode (Wi-Fi/cellular disabled but Bluetooth enabled). Can also open frunk, trunk and charge port, but not control climate or vent windows etc. So it looks like the phone can do the same as the key fob using local connection. Good to know we won’t get stuck using the mobile app if there is no internet connection.
It does. Which is why you don't have to wait for the phone app to connect to the car via internet. Unlocking, starting, opening of trunks and such all work as long as you are within bluetooth range.
Yes it does. Also opening trunk, frunk and chargeport does work via Bluetooth. You don't need a internet connection for this.
Keyfob. It's just like the Model S keybob. I love being able to open and close the trunk with it, and especially stop charging and unlock the cable. Always bring the card.
You didn't mention if the app/card/keyfob remember your settings for seat, wheel and mirrors.

On iPhones, can you ask Siri to open the froot/boot?
Try using the Keyfob without a battery in it, as you would use the card. Hold it to the B-Pillar, hold it in front of the armrest, and you will see, you do not need your card anymore.

I always carry a card with me just incase. However I use my phone app as my primary :)
As a long time MS owner since 2012, I have always liked the key fob. I was happy when they finally brought out a key fob option for the M3. They did not have it at first, but brought it out after owners like me complained and asked Tesla to provide it. I have never liked the key card, which has never worked well for me. My wife likes her phone key option, but I always use the key fob when I drive her M3.

Without seeing the video i would sub consciously pick the key fob, the card is ok but the app isnt for me really, not as a sole means of entering a car. Major thumbs up to tesla tho for exploring all options.
That the Keyfob and phone did not work first try is likely because of your trousers.
The car only unlocks if the recieved signal strength is larger than a certain threshold. In case of a jeans it can be that the metal or body lowers the signal strength so much that the car thinks the phone or keyfob is too far away. I can always demonstrate that, my pocket on the back of my trousers blocks it, while the pocket in front works just fine.

As I said it depends on the pockets and it also depends on the signal strength the car wants the doors to unlock.
For example if you park the car outside your house and you have the key directly behind the window the Tesla would not open for random passengers outside while your car likely will open if they try it. Always just a security measurement.

Key Fob is by far the most reliable. iPhone sometimes glitches but also not really bad. But this NEVER happened to me with the fob. This in combination with unlocking the charge-port, opening frunk and trunk makes it worth the money.
It didn't look reliable..... a lot of people also complain the car has a huge delay in detecting the key fob, it seems so much more hassle compared to every single manufacture with keyless entry.
On Android the unlocking is more consistent if you enable the persistent notification. This also lets you open the frunk from the notification - no need to open the app. Key fob is more convenient for unlocking, but not by much, and it does not let you preheat the car etc. Since you need the app anyway, I dont see a reason to buy the fob.
For when you lock your phone in the car?
@@neil5698 you normally cannot lock your phone in the car if it is setup as entry tool. the problem is more that then the car stays open and anybody can drive if you dont use pin to drive. also you have the card if you forgot eg the phone or it does not connect to the phone sometimes.
the only thing i thus would always use pin to drive to be on the safe side
On Android go to your phone settings then to the battery settings and exclude the Tesla app from the battery optimization. Then the unlocking will work way more reliable, because the phone won't freeze the app in the background to save battery.

I got my key fob yesterday. It doesn't open the car automatically, but it locks the car automatically. Why is this?

Now that I have seen the key fob functions, it’s my choice and ABC for a backup.
If you are in Bluetooth distance you will have direct access with the app in the notification section. If you swipe the fixed notification, car and and both trunks can be opened directly without the waiting for app connection via internet . 😊
On my phone to open truck/frunk I don't need to open the app. Just slide down the notification panel and there is a permanent notification there with 3 buttons: unlock, trunk, frunk. Pressing any of these buttons will do the action right away without any popup confirmation, and best of all, only works via Bluetooth, so no need for internet connection
Regarding opening trunks, frunks on the app, on Android you have a fixed Notification that you can drop down and you have 3 quick options to open the frunk, trunk and something else I forgot, I think its the windows. No need to bring up the app, as long as your Bluetooth is on and it connected to the car.
Unlock, Frunk and Trunk are the three options. I use it all the time to open the frunk.
Would be handy if the notification dropdown options allowed you to open the charge port too - at lease for those of us in Europe that have non-Tesla type 2 wallboxes at home.
Problem with phone and fob is, that when you have them too close to your body, the BT signal will just be absorbed. Which is why you sometimes stand in front of the car like an idiot. I made it a habit to just take the phone out of my pocket when I want to unlock the car. Works really most of the time.
