To me Weeping Peninsula gameplay wise feels like a beginner friendly starter area. It's a portion of Limgrave that houses a lot of great loot and easy encounters. Atleast compared to Stormveil starting with Margit.
It does it's job really well on the 1st playtrough and challenge runs imo.
I also have to give props to the thematic aspects of it. Everything from the naming to the environment tells a story about the cycle of revenge.

Small correction - i'm pretty sure the dogs and birds of Caelid are in fact mutated normal animals. Their presence in mountaintops isn't just because they're some native lands between species, but rather indication that the rot has spread into the mountaintops as a result of Malenia resting in the Haligtree. Snowfields have a similar degree of corruption.
Obviously the corruption in snowfields and mountaintops is much milder than in Caelid, but it's still there.

They are what they eat. The dogs and crows in Mountaintops are feasting on the dead giants, and you can see in Caelid there also large rotting skulls littering the hellish landscape. Rot notwithstanding, their mutations seem to have a lot to do with giants being a part of their diet from a young age

    • @BigRaidah

I like the fact that Weeping Peninsula is so unremarkable. The Elden Ring feels so much more alive bc of that.
Every country has land that seems inconsequential and unremarkable when compared to any other place within the said country. And the Weeping Peninsula is that place. Caelid had the most significant fight in the entire Shattering war, Liurnia is the most educated and sophisticated area, Altus Plateu is the most significant area in the ER, The mountain tops of the giants is rife with deep history, Limgrave is the most populated area in the Lands Between, and Weeping Peninsula has nothing significant about it. The most significant thing to happen in it is the misbegotten rebellion. Hell, every other area in the game has historically significant creatures either guarding it or rulling over it and the Weeping Peninsula has some random knight at the helm of it as a ruler.
Weeping Peninsula is the quiet, small town in the middle of nowhere where everybody knows each other of the Lands Between and I love that about it.

I honestly think its great as it is, and don't know why so many people dislike it. There's plenty of interesting stuff - navigating the blizzard, avoiding the Dragonkin spirits, dodging the electric orb things and runebears to get all the loot, the wolfriders, the frenzy trolls and yelough anix tunnel (one of the few really unique mines in the game, and easily the best one imo), the Mausoleum surprising you with magic artillery, and even though the Albinaurics aren't new its so long since you last fought them that I was happy to see them. I also (controversially) really like Ordina. The snowfields aren't as dense with content as the rest of the regions, but like Magicat said that works with the aesthetic/vibe.

  • @Marco1995Mega

Personally, I think there are only 5 regions, with 4 of them having major sub-regions. Also, Mountaintops has an additional path at the west end of the valley, where you can find a spirit-spring that takes you to a hidden merchant and the Stargazer Ruins. You can also cross from one side of the upper layers to another via the invisible bridge connected to the mage tower.
Also, I don't think holding replay value against some of these is the most fair criticism, since, by design, discovery is a major part of their appeal and that can't be reproduced on subsequent playthroughs. I don't think being less replayable is an inherent design flaw; that's just how open world games are.

It is an interesting concept but it can be frustrating. The archers deal tons of damage and can easily spam the arrows to kill you really fast. And the invisible assassins are annoying with the grabs since you cannot see what they are doing, so there is no way to know the grab is coming your way. I had a time where I got grabbed, walked a few steps and got grabbed again.

  • @jackreacher7495
    @jackreacher7495 Před 11 měsíci +4

Hot take but I think Mountaintops is underrated. The lore is better-understood now, so I feel like the weight of the catacombs and caves have more meaning now. The "reused assets" are there with purpose (the birds and dogs from Caelid, who are fighting the keepers of the flame, mind you, are not unlike the birds of Mohgwyn Palace - clearly these creatures aren't natural, but rather they might be connected to the fiery, tainting corruptive influence of these outer gods like the Fell God, Rot God, and Formless Mother). There's a lot of hidden stories there, and a somber atmosphere. And it culminates in one of the best legacy dungeons in the game - Farum Azula.
Personally, I think the weakest is Caelid. That shocked me, too, when I thought about it and came to this conclusion. But yeah, don't get me wrong - Caelid is one of my favorite areas in terms of visual aesthetic and atmosphere. However, I don't much care for its side dungeons nor the majority of its catacombs/caves/bosses. For me, what makes an Elden Ring dungeon enjoyable to explore on replays is soaking in their stories and the smaller stories you might find within, spelling out more of the history in the area. However, because Caelid was nuked by a rot war, most of its areas are reflective of that. And while for some, like Gael Tunnel, use this to horrific effect, most just don't have that to me. I can't quite put my finger as to why, other than... it's the Lands Between's history that's now missing in most of these areas, which make them interesting, I suppose. They've all been touched by the war, and for me that translates its dungeons into blending together.
On top of that, I'm not much of a fan of its layout, gameplay-wise. I find needing to do Sellia's torches to take more time, and thus be more tedious, than Ordina. And it's always to do Milicent's quest, which you'll likely always want to do to get the talismans and Ancient Somber Smithing Stone. And then there's Dragonbarrow, which is a great area, but because of the level divide between it and Caelid proper, you're forced to awkwardly come back in the endgame when you're leveled for it, all for an area with not much environmental storytelling happening in the west - not as much in the east, which most players are going to have awkwardly stumbled upon early through D's questline, in all likelihood.
None of this is bad, mind you. I love Caelid and what they did with it, even all the stuff I've nitpicked. However, we're ranking these, and it's for these reasons that Caelid winds up as my least favorite area. This is despite Radahn being one of my favorite FS bosses of all time.

I love the build up to mt gelmir but lord it was a short lived disappointment everything is peaking in the mid category it doesnt feel like your at the “volcano manor” it feels like limgrave (rocky)

Its not bad but its not amazing wither perfectly balanced in mid

    -#4 underground 😮
This and lurania lake are really on the same level to me except when you reach the underground your character build starts to really develop
Its pretty criminal to put ALL the underground in one category but whatever
The shock factor and the spectacle is what raises this area above the rest other than that it feels like an area you just run through
    -#3 altus plateau 😎
Very unique and beautiful area with cool and challenging enemies (for the most part)
Also best castle in the game
-#2 mountain tops of the gaints🥶😳
    Now…let me explain
The hype i get from the mountain tops of the giants is unmatched being in the cold and getting the most difficulty out of a huge icy mountain makes it feel really special
The area looks just straight up amazing and i don’t mind reusing the same enemy types ( i hate dogs and birds but i can look past it)
Knowing that late game is in a snowy area sounds cool as hell and it is!
The fire looks amazing in it although the fire gaint is mechanical a sad boss
But oh lord farum azula is my favorite location with my favorite bosses
    -#1 limgrave ❤🥺
    Ah good ol lim grave
This area feels like home its relaxing and lies in a special place in everyones heart
Coming back to it feels great every time

Niall is very underrated I’d agree. I’d say mountaintops is mediocre not bad

The mountaintops of the giants isn't my favourite area, but I don't really like it. Despite that it isn't as big as it may look. The area of the mountaintops where you can go to is about as big as caelid without dragonburrow. It just looks very big on the map.

Problem is that even though its not as big as other regions, it's all linear and narrow so it takes longer to reach the end of Mountaintops compared to Caelid, and pretty much every zone except maybe Liurnia.

@@magicat7356 But it's still very small and easy to move around. Unless you're doing Castle Sol and every cave, it's by a good margin the smallest open area of the game.

Mountaintops and Consecrated Snowfield definitely got a demon ruins treatment, I love the area and the atmosphere, but enemy wise it’s trash, nothing unique to offer really

For me, the weeping peninsula isn’t separate from limgrave

I disagree with liurnia being to big in scale. I am actually for adding more space to smaller zones. It gives you the feeling of actually traveling somewhere and gives you an opportunity to soak in the ambience and atmosphere. Cramping the content too close together robs a zone of its sense of scale.

Exactly! It's a work of art and is easily my favourite area of the game.
