The Amazing Adventures of Bill German and The Rolling Stones

- Bill German started "Beggars Banquet" a fanzine on the Stones in 1978, a few years later it becomes the Stones' official fan club newsletter for fans worldwide and the next thing you know he's having orange juice at Mick Jagger's house, hanging with Keith at parties and eating bananas at Ronnie Wood's house....and somehow lived to tell about it.
His adventures can be found in the must-have book under their thumb: Under Their Thumb: How a Nice Boy from Brooklyn Got Mixed Up with the Rolling Stones (and Lived to Tell About It). Required reading for Stones fans. Fun to chat with Bill on this one--enjoy!

I must have read 25 Stones books, but "Under Their Thumb" is my favorite. Such a ride into the inner sanctum. I read it 4 times already. Thanks Bill German! Thanks for this interview Hang Fire ;)
Thanks so much for watching!

Yeah, Bill's book is so good
Best Stones book. By far. Have read it, re-read it, recommended it, given it away as gift and then bought another copy. Absolute classic, thanks Bill.
Absolutely a classic
Was a member of Beggars Banquet as a teenager! Still have old copies in a trunk. Thanks guys!
Thanks for watching!
Bill's not only this great writer with this one-of-a-kind book every Stones' fan MUST have! He's also one of the most honest and down-to-earth persons one can ever meet, and a much loved friend after all these years. Thanks for a great interview all the way from Argentina!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Fantastic! For us genuine Stones nuts this stuff is gold.
Exactly 😎
Loved the interview, Justin! Bill is a fantastic guy, and a wonderful writer. I loved his book more than anything I've ever read on them. That's because he's just a Stones freak like the rest of us!!!
Exactly 💯 that's what makes the book a favorite among fans. We can all picture ourselves in his shoes. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 👍
Great to keep the story alive! Bill did it, and is keeping it going! thanks for a wonderful interview, glad to see Bill finally and hear the insight.
The Stones were so far away for us young fans that his exposure and fanzine opened us up more.
I am always nervous how the young music fans may not feel the Stones vibe now, but eventually it will come back full circle again and they will have our archives to pick up on.
Thank you Steve! Yes I can't imagine what an amazing resource Bill's zine was to fans everywhere.
And the Stones' legacy I think will be good!
Great fun !.Thanks guys ! I loved getting the newsletter . Also thoughly enjoyed the book . I'm a ordinary fan originally from the Midwest . Fans are so important . That's why I really like you guys . Hope Bill will come back ! Loved the impressions 😊 . 1st saw the band in 1978 , at age 16.. That would make me & Bill the same age . Good job young whipper snapper & keep up the good work . Thanks again , really enjoyed it 😊
Very cool you were a subscriber of the newsletter. the book is indeed a classic. Thanks for the kind words and for watching! 👍👍😎🎸🤘
Great interview. Bill is always interesting to listen to. BTW, before Beggar's Banquet, I subscribed to another Stones fanzine called "SMOOTH" which later called itself "The home for wayward Angies"! Anyone remember that one?
I remember getting a few issues of beggars banquet from a bass player friend of mine ,took those things for granted back then.
I’ve known William now for over 40 years. Only met him once in person, but it’s like we’ve been friends forever.
Bill is a Stones friend to all!
Slam dunk, Great get, for the channel! As German did back in the day, new and younger fans need to learn history and keep the Rolling Stones fire lit!
Thanks so much! Couldn't wait to have him on and super stoked it happened!
So they were cool with the magazine, and they gave Bill their blessing.
Won a personally autographed album of Primitive Cool from Beggar’s Banquet and a connection for tickets 98 in Amsterdam.
Wow that is so awesome. Very cool. Bill's helped so many fans throughout the years 👍
Great interview! Thank you both!
Thanks for watching Keith!
The best book I’ve ever read on the STONES is “Old GODS Almost Dead” Very highly recommended 👍🏽
I subscribed to Beggars Banquet from 83 until the end. Helped get me through high school. I could never thank Bill enough!😜
Provided quite a service all those years!
Well done Justin, that was a great interview.
thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it!
Ronnie was really around since Hyde Park when Brian died.
And kieth was living with Ronnie in late 73 ,74 , when the police were after kueth like they did with Brian.
At the wick when Ronnie was recording own album to do.
I never read this one, but I will now.
It's a classic - let me know what you think

Bill- excellent! And this young man Justin- he's good! Seriously- both of you with wonderful perspectives on The Stones, with smart and humorous, reverant but not-ridiculously-so, takes on the band we still love. Very enjoyable. Thanks guys! Both of you keep up the great work.
Thank you for the kind words! Bill is a class act, great joy to speak with him. Super glad everyone enjoyed the chat 👍
Great interview reaffirming truth is stranger than fiction.
I'll have to get this book.

Appreciate that ! 👍
This was so awesome to watch! Thank you of this! I felt like I was with him while telling these stories Great stuff!
thanks so much for watching!
It's great to get a glimpse of them as regular people. Often the public personas of celebrities is very different than their private personality. Thanks for this interesting interview.
Glad you enjoyed it Janice! Yes with Bill being smack dab in the middle of all the action his book really paints a very honest and accessible picture of the Stones offstage. Highly recommended!
I had a few issues of Beggars Banquet. Great little magazine. Great interview! The club Bill first met them outside of was Danceteria I'm pretty sure.
Yup definitely was that one.
Holy schmolie, what a show!!!! Pure heaven for me, thanks Bill and Justin..aha story... Classic.... Justin,
u never asked about Wyman!!!!! I am disappointed... But awesome show buddy
Thanks Sal! Yes you're right I missed out on Wyman plus a few other things too. Hope to bring that up with Bill next time. 🤞 Glad you enjoyed it!
Love Bill German. I think I’ve saved everything I could get from him. What he said during this interview was so great for me. It got me reminiscing about his fanzine. Here’s a photo of some of the stuff I saved from my subscriptions. I even have personalized notes to me, signed by Bill! Thanks for the great interview!👍🏼🎤🎸😎
Damn, I can’t figure out how to attach a photo to my comment!😟
Darn wish I could have seen the pictures sadly pictures aren't allowed in comments. So great you were a follower of Beggars Banquet before. You probably have quite a treasure trove!
@@HangFireStonesPodcastJustin, thanks for all of your great podcasts. I’m 65 years old and just a bit technologically challenged, but I’d love to send you and Bill a single photo of a lot of my “Connection” and “Beggar’s Banquet” issues. Also in the photo (if you zoom in) you can see hand written notes from Bill to me. I’m really glad I saved this stuff! Additionally, my 30 year old son and my wife have tickets to see the boys in Philadelphia on June 11th at Lincoln Financial Field. I’ve seen The Rolling Stones of every tour since The Some Girls Tour in 1978! Please let me know how I can send this photo to you. Thanks!

Really, really enjoyed this chat! Thanks so much Justin for bringing us these gems! Always so much to learn from you and from your guests! PS really loved the Mick & OJ story! Bill told it so well, I felt like it was me standing over Mick (in my dreams!). Take good care, thanks again! ♥🎵🎶
Thanks for the nice message as usual Wendy! Glad you enjoyed this one. It was fun to do!
Hi I read the book about three years ago really fascinating back stage stuff about the stones
A classic book for sure 😎
Great interview Justin!
Thank you Allan!!

I have to add- the impersonations were so funny and spot-on…made the video even more entertaining
He's got it down pat 👍😁
Great chat Justin! Had the pleasure to meet and briefly speak to Bill several years ago on his book signing tour..Brooklyn boy to Queens boy
Awesome 👍 Thanks so much for watching!
More good stuff from Hang Fire. Excellent interview, Justin. I also got a kick out of Bill's imitations of Mick and Keith. He's pretty good, definitely put a smile on my face. This is the perfect place for people that really love the Stones. My obsession started in 1974 and has never wavered. I look forward to reading his book!
Thanks so much 👍 Yes it was great fun to hear Bill channel Mick and Keith---absolutely uncanny! In the full interview on Spotify Bill hints that he's been thinking about doing more with the impressions! Super happy you're enjoying the channel!
Excellent interview!
I have bill's book.
Every stones fan should buy it.i have emailed Bill a couple of times.he has always been very nice and answered me👍

I read his book years ago when it was first released and found it Fascinating 👍👍

That was awesome and have read Bill's book more than once, just an a amazing read and completely engrossing, on top of the great stories and material, Bill is an excellent writer and really makes you feel like you were there.
Thanks so much! It's an incredible book isn't it? Really a staple in a collection.

This was great! I enjoyed this so much. I love true life Stones reality stories. I'll have to get the book.
So great you enjoyed it. yes the book is a page turner--highly recommended!
Hi, Justin. WOW, this was so much fun ! What great stories Bill has ! Oh, yes, I remember buying the Undercover-album on the first day of release, with the Beggars Banquet promo sheet inside ! Still got it, of course. Man, I gotta get me that book ! Geir, Norway. 👍
Thanks Geir! Yes his book is really one of the must-haves--couldn't put it down when I was reading it. Let me know what you think!
@@HangFireStonesPodcast Yes, I will !
OMG! That was a great chat, amazing. I would have loved to hear how the story of the connection of Bill with the Stones continued beyond the specific period in the early 80ies and eventually unraveled. Material for a second chat? Great work, thank you so much!
So much to discuss! All covered in his book too. Let's hope we can have Bill again on for part 2! 🤞 Thanks for watching!
Wow…yes, I had a subscription to Beggars Banquet and thought it was super-fantastic…wish I still had them….amazing to see the creator. Such a small world to think I was receiving my copies in the mail here in Australia as a teenager. No internet…I must have seen the advert in Rolling Stone magazine. Even seeing the images of the covers brings back memories…the images are still etched on my brain…I couldn’t believe I was getting delivered photos and stories..😂I remember photos of Keith and Patti’s wedding and Mick with Jerry…exclusive photos….I was on a super-high 😂
Oh I’m still watching…so his fanzine was advertised with Undercover album…that must have been how I subscribed ❤
Wow so awesome that you were a subscriber! I'm sure Bill might remember your especially being from Australia! Glad I could help close the circle on that all these years later!
Absolutely brilliant interview 👏 I've read Bill's book too. Incredible stuff ❤
Thanks very much - very happy you enjoyed it!
Great book! "Before They Make Me Run" is a great book too! Lots of unknown info from one of my favorite times.
nice gotta put that one on the to-read list 😎
@@HangFireStonesPodcast Put it to the front. It's really good.
Just ordered the book... Can't wait! 🎉
That's awesome! Let me know what you thought of it 👍
Nice chat. I have the book and really enjoyed it. I kind of wish Bill - and Justin here - could have offered a glimpse into how Bill saw and felt the band tensions, especially between Mick and Keith, during those difficult years of 1983 - 1988, give or take, and of how Ronnie was instrumental in getting the band back on track. But maybe he didn't see that stuff, and anyway, he was still pretty young during those years. But a good book and a fine chat here. Thanks both.
We hope to have Bill on again to focus on this area. Way too much to cover in one sitting 😎👍 thanks so much for watching!
I had a phone...my first phone.
Thanks for a great interview.
Thanks for watching!
It's be great if he collected all the issues and made them into a book.
Would be great 👍 You can purchase a few remaining hard copies of Beggars Banquet on his site, fyi
@@HangFireStonesPodcast It's becoming obvious that there is alot of great vintage stuff still in the can. Songs, videos, concerts. I wish they'd start releasing this stuff. Hopefully we don't have to have Mick or Keith die for more things to come out. Personally I had no idea there was a great quality full recording of El Macambo. Or the wonderful Texas '78 video. I had a bootleg of the '78 Texas show as a kid and it was dreadful. An audience audio. Other artists have released box sets of unreleased stuff going back as far as Dylan's Biograph set. Hopefully everything will start coming out before Keith is forced to retire by his terrible arthritis. I don't want to have to wait until one of them dies. Allen Klein is dead. I think the Stones have regained the rights to the Decca stuff. I guess if they sell the rights to their catalog like many other of their contemporaries then they will lose control of what gets released?
My friend had the stupid phone and those stupid squares of gum that were album covers.
Kinda like baseball cards ,I think that they were going for.
Collection.
I don't have the book but I will get it sooner or later. Interview was lots of fun.
Glad you dug it! Book is well worth having!

If this guy went on Fallon to talk about his days with the stones it’d be like:

- He invited me backstage at the..
Fallon: WOW! rEALLY? BACKSTAGE THATS SO COOL, HAHAH

@@HangFireStonesPodcast Great interview. Great Episode - !!
Also if you were into the best dope and knew who and where it was going down .
You were in , if you were cool.
The early to mid 80s, were a low point for rock and roll.,in general.
Jagger got punched in the face by Charlie but much earlier from Brian Jones. Word is Brian took Mick’s chicken sandwich and Mick started yelling at Brian so Brian socked him, giving Mick a black eye
Is beggars banquet still going today.?
Unfortunately not. Had an amazing 17 year run!
Must have been steel wheels.
What was it dirty work , if so what a drag.
Have you heard World War 24 by Ryan Adams?
Haha I just looked it up. Who knew Keith was a Ryan fan?
@@HangFireStonesPodcast It can't be a coincidence.
