  • Today we wanted to talk about a nutritional assistance program called WIC, a program designed to help Women, Infants, and Children.
Everyone knows our family loves to plan, to save money, and to help others find ways to use their resources wisely.
If you are getting WIC checks, we hope this video gives you some ideas on how you might make a variety of meals that your children can enjoy using the WIC checks plus $8 to feed a 2-5 year old for a whole month.

I often pay for my dried beans and get a jar of pb as its much more expensive. We use it in pb and banana wraps and then we use it to flavor oatmeal. When we were broke I went to supplement with dollar tree and I get for a $1 a piece: 2lb of rice, 1.5lb lbs of pinto beans, 1.5 lbs of thin spaghetti, largest can of tomatos I can find (2/1), a carton of eggs and 1 large jar of applesauce... This brings me to 6.00. With my fruit and veggie check at walmart I get the cheapest apples. 3lbs of bananas a 2lb bag of carrots and then some frozen veggies to round it out. Half way thought the month I go and buy a 2nd bag of carrots apples and a few more bananas so approx 5.00-7.00. I tend to buy my staples at tax time so a couple gallons of oil salt pepper and sugar, flour and oats. My kids don't often drink juice so we reserve that for special occasions and my mom helps me can it into jelly. We also occasionally have access to free garden produce in the summer so I freeze what I can.

Thanks for sharing these ideas. It's amazing the ways we can save money by being creative and comparing prices. Great job.

This is extremely helpful..even with the prices going up as we can adjust to the new prices. We are becoming a lot tighter as I'm taking a break from babysitting as we are having our 3rd child soon, plus starting homeschooling. Thank you guys! Great job to your daughter!! Great ideas!

Why don’t you want to get wic benefits ? It would be so helpful and save you money that you can save

We’ve answered this before. We are not in need, thanks for respecting our decisions on these matters.

I would think you can get more meals because I think a 5 year old can eat 1 egg

Yes. We were showing what a portion size looked like. We have people question us sometimes saying "my kids eat more than that". We made this menu based on serving sizes in the side of the box. So there is probably much more available with kids eating less than this.

At least in Ohio, brown rice and oatmeal are included in the whole grains portion of WIC so you wouldn’t need to even buy that.
